Anything’s better than a poke in the eye! I think you’re on the right track for your climate. A fireplace or woodstove seems a lot more efficient for just a house in a mild climate. I think a boiler is better suited if it was in a heating a multiple buildings and you had a lot of unsellable wood to feed it. It’s great to see you teaching your apprentice! Keep up the good work and stay safe!

Hey Jacob! T.O.A’s son here, I delivered a full cord to a guy who supplements with wood heat in his house. He had a 3,500 SQUARE FEET HOUSE! His fireplace seems to be about what you will be getting. He did a test and turned off the furnace in his house, and he said the fireplace heated his whole house easily in freezing temperatures. Great video! Hope that info is useful!

Thanks for the info Evan!! That’s good to know! The one I’m getting will supposedly heat 2,500 sf. My house is almost 2,000 sf so It should be adequate enough. The folks I’ve talked to have been well pleased with theirs but I love to gather as much info as possible cuz I’m a dork!! 😂🤣. Appreciate you taking time to watch and comment with helpful feedback!!

Wood heat…love it. Making firewood like you do you’ll really enjoy burning the “unsellable” stuff. Don’t know anything about the fireplace you’re talking about. Good luck! Should be fun!

I love heating with wood. I keep my 4300 square foot house comfortable with an old drafty fireplace I sent in michigan. Some years are colder than others. That moisture meter looks good. If they want to give you free stuff, take advantage!

There’s no heat like wood heat and thanks for sharing that moisture meter. The design looks really nice for carrying around. I always have the normal style ones in my pocket which are annoying. I grew up in a log house and built one myself. both have wood stoves and fireplaces for supplemental heat. Definitely makes you feel good when you can heat your home with a little hard work.

Hello Jacob and the firewood apprentice. I think you'll be very happy with the fireplace insert you have pick out. I hand a new Vermont Casting wood stove put in our home this past spring. It has been great heat and very efficient. Since the first of November 2023 we have had a fire going in the stove all day, every day, and I haven only burnt 4 face cords as of last friday. It did get a bit hungry the week we had sub-zero temps. I myself prefer the radiant heat of a wood stove or insert to the forced air from a wood boiler. I think these new high efficiency wood burning products are a great investment. Well, I've rambled enough, take care my friend.

Hey Bobby!! Wow! That’s impressive you’ve only used 4 Ricks! I’m glad you said that. My house is almost 2,000 sf. I’m curious how much wood I’ll go through. How many square feet are you heating if you don’t mind me asking? We got down to 0* a few times recently and I sure wish I had it already. We’re all electric right now. I appreciate the helpful information man!! Ramble away!! 😉. I’m all ears!! Thanks again!!

@TwinCityFirewood we're only heating about 900 sf with a stove rated for 1200 sf. The shop I bought it from did think it would be enough, but I wanted this particular stove, as it's Vermont Casting's only model in a north/south configuration. I have a thing for north/south stoves. Back to the point, we can keep the house at 75 degrees with no issue. This stove is our primary heat source. I have gotten a bit carried away, loading it up at night, and had to peel the blanks off the bed. We've hit 82 a few times🥵.

I just had a Osburn 950 wood stove installed in my house. Wife and I absolutely love it! Yes definitely have contractors install it for insurance purposes. The half of the house with the stove is about 500SF and it'll put 15 degeees in the space in about an hour. Boilers are nice but your location isn't the most conducive to boilers. I installed the cement board and tile behind the stove on the wall myself and we have a steel plate on the floor underneath it. If I ever build a new house I will build the entire house around the wood stove. It is fantastic. Great decision to get one installed. I'll send pictures if you would like. Love the channel and really like the meter. I'm gonna check that out for sure. I like the small pen style . God bless Jacob and family!!

You bet! That little meter is a really nice size. Glad you’re interested! It’s called a zero clearance fireplace b/c it can be installed with a 2x4 structure around it. You don’t have to have a “brick & mortar” chimney. Fireplace xtrodanair is the company that makes the one we’re getting. In 2023 they started offering a tax credit up to $2k on a few models. Hope this info is helpful!! Thanks for commenting!!

I’m definitely going to be following along on your fireplace insert. I have a gas log insert now, as Chris In the Woodyard calls it a “flame place” 😂 I’d love to put a fireplace in its place. We’re about the same as far as climate and I’m with you, I just don’t think a wood boiler is the right equipment for us in TN Enjoyed The video, and those are some dandy looking test splits 👍🏻

Glad to hear you’re interested! Yeah, I’ve read and studied on these zero clearance fireplaces. I’ve called every dealer within 2 hours of me, and also called Travis industries (the ppl that invented this type & manufacture them) 😂🤣. Told you I’m a nerd 😉🤷‍♂️. In 2023 they started offering up to a $2k tax credit on the model I’m looking at. You’re in a mild winter area like me I’m sure. We have extreme spells, but they’re short lived. Thanks for always taking time to comment Brandon!! 👊🏻

Great moisture meter. And thanks for the shout out. I would say boiler but for your location don’t think you could justify having one. But if you did a HeatMaster G4000 is all you would need. But a fireplace is always a good option. Nothing is better than wood heat. Looking forward to those videos.

Looking forward to hearing what you think about your heater. I have a boiler in Michigan but our heating days are 7 plus months. My other house had a stand alone wood furnace. I think you're on the right track. Plus you'll be independent and self sufficient with your heat like you said. Crew will have some work to do. My grandson is named Crew. Nice video

Yessir,, I’m looking forward to it. They’re supposed to be very efficient. We get roughly 6 months of heating weather. Hey Mr. Del!! 🤣😂. Yeah, he knew I was cutting up!! You’re in a similar situation as me, but I don’t have an existing fireplace, if I did (like you), I’d be looking at an insert as well. The one I’m getting is a 42 apex made by fireplace xtrodanair. You may want to check them out. They make inserts as well. Thanks so much for your support and advice!!

Hi Jacob. Just discovered your channel and love your content. We live in a 4,000 sq ft house (the basement is 4k also). Like you I spend a lot of time researching solutions. We already have a fireplace and spent a year trying to heat the house with it. The result was too much mess, smoke and work dragging the wood inside, and having a central warm zone and colder to cold on the fringes. Our heat bills here in Central Illinois were running $700 a month, and so a wood solution was needed. I settled on an outside Heatmaster GS7000 wood gassification boiler because of it's efficiency - it uses 1/3 of the wood than a regular wood boiler. The mess stays outside. The gassification boiler does not produce smoke. It just spews steam. I got $8000 back from the federal government in an alternative energy tax rebate, and the boiler saves me about $3600 a year in heating costs. It will pay for itself in about 4 years (that's two more years now). Plus, it gives us all our domestic hot water too. You might reconsider your choices. Blessings to you also. Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God! jim

Hey Jim! Appreciate the kind words and information. I think you made a wise choice. In my situation, I just can’t justify the cost of a boiler. It would take too long to pay for itself in my opinion. Our winters are mild and our heating costs now are reasonable. $200-$230 average. I mainly am looking for a backup heating source and supplemental heat. Although the water heater sounds nice with my big family 😂. Glad you like the videos and hope you’ll be back. Appreciate your time watching and commenting!! God Bless!!

Hey there Jacob! Great video that day! Ya the weather is quite something here also in central NB, we only have apx. 8-12” of snow… which is quite low for us here.. anyway Nice to see the young fella with ya there learning the types of wood there 🔥💯👍. Ya I totally hear ya about doing super research on new tools or equipment! I’m 💯 the same way buddy! 🤙. I understand your reasoning behind your decision in not wanting to go with the boiler option and it sounds like the other option is going to work better in the long run for you an the family 🔥💯👍. Cool moisture meter to there! Thanks for showing us! Compact for sure! Anyways hope the rain lets up soon for ya so you can go back out an play In The Woodyard 🔥💯👍! I have a buck insert in my fireplace. It’s an energy efficient unit. It’s rated to heat a 1850 sq ft house. I love it I thought about getting the boiler type to sit in the yard….but loading it early in the morning the smoke coming out of it while loading would make me smell like smoke all day at work. I didn’t like that.
