I really enjoy watching you guys "living" doing what you need to do to keep warm, fed and all the everyday stuff you have to do to survive in that climate, the building and all your projects a bonus. Great to see your daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren all involved learning the process and the lifestyle.

Where we live [southeastern Canada] it is nowhere near as cold as Alaska in winter, but doing wood is still a big part of our time. Felling trees, limbing, cutting into lengths, hauling to the wood yard, cutting into stove lengths, splitting [yay for the hydraulic wood splitter!], filling our two wood sheds. My husband has three wood piles....one for putting in the sheds at the end of this season for next year, then two other piles that will season longer for the next two years.

This video gives a good glimpse of living in remote Alaska. The whole family working together is what its all about! Love the grandkids! All our grandkids started using equipment around the farm. They all drove early...like 11 years old. The time for them to take a driving test was just a legality. They were use to driving tractors and farm trucks.... Wait. Is the little one the boss? Wood cutting and splitting marathon was great..lots of family help..my humble suggestion is to buy 2 or 3 tons of coal and save yourself a lot of work and you get a huge amount of heat from coal compared to the source you are burning..

Great to see getting the kids involved so they understand what it takes when they want a warmer house, might make them second guess putting another log on to be in T-Shirts vs Sweatshirt.

OK, Back again LOL. I have a friend who lives up there. She's in her 70's, During the summer, She cuts her truck full once every day or so all through the summer to fill her wood shed.Speaking of a woodshed, with all that wonderful beetle kill wood you have you should be able to build one really nice big wood shed. Big being the operative word! I'd say the biggest expense will be the metal for roofing.

If the wood is dry and as long as it fits in my wood stove i dont waist time splitng it. I've found that larger blocks will hold a fire longer than smaller split wood. Im 66 and have been burning wood my entire life. If it's at all green i do split. Im located in central Wi and temps can drop to -20 at times. I heat my 32'x42' log home with a soap stone wood stove. The house is open style except for bed room and bath room. I always try to save as much time as i can when making wood. It's good to be at least 2 years ahead with the wood supply. Best of luck to you!!!

Must have been quite a 'temperature difference' shock to the body. Looks like you have plenty of snow and cold weather to go with it. Our second home that we lived in for 26 years was heated with a wood burning furnace. I burned wood from trees that I cut down on our property in Eagle River, Wisconsin, and with pallets that I found in industrial areas. I 'll take using a log splitter, to stock up on firewood, over tearing apart pallets any day! We enjoy your videos. How are those chicks of yours doing?

Fact of living in the cold for sure. Had an idea. I know you’re off grid but that diesel heater takes fuel to run. I’ve gotta believe there’s a block heater available for that splitter engine. Most of those have two oil fills on either side or at very least a couple bolt in plugs in the block. Might be an easy fix. At least when you know you’ll be using it you could plug it in a couple hours ahead of time. Take care Ryan & Von

Congratulations Finally! Why? Because you all are one of the very few that understand that when splitting wood, there is no better tool that the wood splitter! Sure it'll work you, but no where near as much as doing it by hand! And Von, you and I would get along just fine, we do it similarly. Split down the center, keep it together and rotate, saves on how many times you have to cycle the ram! I sure wish y'all could get some of the same wood we get down here ( in North Carolina) While oak doesn't bun as hot, it does burn oh so much longer. I am curious though, why do you split it down so small? Since you are all insulated up now, how does the woodstove do as far as heating the whole place?
@wildwoodoffgridalaska
@wildwoodoffgridalaska Жыл бұрын
We are splitting this stuff down small because it’s green and unseasoned. Mixed with the good seasoned wood we have the green wood burns when it’s smaller. The Blaze king is amazing and heats the entire house easily all night. We load it up full at about 930pm and it holds heat and coals until 8am the next morning.

And then you get old, your all crippled up... my toyo has made me a free man from skidding trees for firewood. Our problem is everyone local burns wood and so wood is hard to come by. Still, wood will warm you clear through aching bones. Oil, not so much unless your right on top of the fan blowing heat. I do miss cutting wood and my son, who is only sixty now (where did all the time go?) still burns wood and would supply me with wood as well but he only gets a few days at a time off and then its back to the mines... gold mines. I do think the neighbor who stolen your wood from you is nice and warm.... might just send him a e-mail, next time just go to costa rica with us and save us from killing you. I have taken the air filter out when the engine is cold, give it just a touch of cosby sauce... just a whiff, and give it a crank... usually if its kind of wanting to go,, it will then as the air filter is so restrictive of its air that its a little harder to first get going. Five years from now will all be memories to keep you giggling while a toddy or seven help keep the memories fun
