Once you tighten the house you may notice the wood stove will pull allot of air. If you provide the air supply via exterior vent to the back of the wood stove it will neutralize the air pressure in the house. If you don’t feed it air you may notice a whooshing sound when you open the door. That’s negative air pressure. They make shrouds for wood stoves with a vent to the outside. When I did that I found a burned less wood and the house got even warmer. Since it does not burn that air directly it replaces the oxygen in the home and preheats it in the process. Just a thought.😊

I’ve thought about get the direct air kit but I think there will be enough leakage around the house that we won’t need it. If we find a problem that’s the direction we’ll go.

@@wildwoodoffgridalaska like you said in the video. It’s the result of your own work. That’s the best part and very rewarding. Glad things are warmer inside with the stove. There is nothing better than wood heat. We put a wood stove in our basement last year just to take the chill off and love it. We have a stove insert in out fireplace too and the outdoor wood boiler but the wood stove heat is the best. 😄 I grew up with wood heat at cooking on the stove. I believe it is good for my soul. Lol. One thing I did when we built out house was put some 2x6’s sideways in the wall in areas I planned to put deer heads and mounts. I’m glad I did. Might be something to consider as you progress. It’s easier than trying to find a stud and lot more robust. Keep up the good work!!

Maine Life, you are spot on about providing an outside source for combustion air! There is no reason to let the air one works so hard to heat just disappear up the flue pipe. A simple 4-6" round pipe run through the crawl space from outside to an elbow under the stove with a closeable vent grill is all you need. Be sure to add an 1/8" or less screen over the outside open end of the pipe to keep vermin out!

I've done a tom of them, NOT!!! You're going to have that plastic so tight that every time you breathe the plastic will be sucking in and out. haha, Wait, GOLD MINING CAMP!!! I lived in Northern Indiana and ours were insulated and the place wasn't really comfortable until we had 12" of insulation in the ceiling. I can't imagine you wouldn't need at least that much in Alaska! It looks like you're moving right along!:-)

Welcome to the channel. The outer walls have R21 insulation and will have 2” foam on the outside giving the walls a total of R31. The ceiling has R38 insulation and will have cellulose insulation blown in on top to give it a total of R70.

Now that you are moved in what is your time frame for getting all the jobs done in the inside?
@wildwoodoffgridalaska
@wildwoodoffgridalaska Жыл бұрын
It’s going to be on a need to priority list. We probably need power the most next. We’ll focus on the getting the generator up and running with our batteries we picked up for solar. Then either the water system or the new propane furnace 😁 Just taking it day by day 😉

Not that I would want to leave Ryan out from being objectified when his underwear keeps being pulled down as he's doing aerial work above but I would prefer to see Vonn's attire a bit "kiddywampuss" like the plastic! It's so much fun watching both of you laughing and truly making a great home together. It would be interesting to see some video of the work Ryan contracts at the "man camp" project. Thanks for sharing such a neat adventure for all of us to be part of. Be Safe and Happy Gobble Gobble!

With all the driving you do, do you have the winter spiked tires?
@wildwoodoffgridalaska
@wildwoodoffgridalaska Жыл бұрын
No, we don’t have studs on our vehicles. Our diesel truck that we do most of our driving in, has 1000lbs of sand bags in the back for weight in the winter as well as 4 wheel drive.

Out of curiosity, what does the plastic cover do?? Why is it necessary?? I would be afraid it would trap in moisture and cause mold/mildew.
@wildwoodoffgridalaska
@wildwoodoffgridalaska Жыл бұрын
It’s a vapor barrier sealing the warm air in and the cold air out. If you do this you need a certain amount of air transfer to let the house breath. This is calculated by how much air is moved out of the living space via range vents and bathroom vents. Sometimes whole house vent systems are installed. It all in the name of energy efficiency.

@@wildwoodoffgridalaska thanks Ryan, interesting stuff! Love watching 👀 This is the kind of stuff I like doing. Turning 50 soon it becomes harder to do home upgrades. So satisfying to know you did it and it was done correctly and saved a shit ton. Keep it up!! You cut and split your own firewood?? I don't, I draw the line when it comes to that 😆😆

Why did they put the red tape on top of the vapor barrier. I could understand if there were seams but the vapor barrier was one piece and they put the red tape everywhere. Anybody ?

Staples make holes and you should seal them to prevent the moisture to get into your insulation...
@wildwoodoffgridalaska
@wildwoodoffgridalaska Жыл бұрын
Martin is exactly right. You can use acoustic sealant on the studs to do the same thing but we chose to use tape.

So they caught ya buddy. Enough gold in alaska to pay off our national debt many times over as you go out to pan, it may not look like much in one pan but every acre has gold on it. At least that is what is said. Home is most important tho. If all the gold in alaska was retrieved, the price of gold would be like prices of copper or lead. Not so much, yet people worship the stuff
