Wood that bends??
Bending wood has always been a time consuming and challenging process, this product that I found will make many jobs easier and far more cost and time effective.
This is a unique material that has been formulated to allow the craftsman to us a solid material that can be machined like MDF and then formed into a bend using a simple hot air gun.
I have faced several jobs that have involved making a curved section of moulding to match existing finishes and have had to spend time kerfing the material to allow it to make a raduis this then needs careful filling and finishing by the decorator
Other ways of forming curved moulding are spindle moulder, CNC or 5 Access CNC all of these are more suited if you need to use real timber or particular hardwoods, but for a painted moulding or for paint effect like graining this material is perfect

Just used some for skirting around 5 curved in frame kitchen units. Took a bit to heat up and hold the heat, burns as well! Don't use a clamp to hold the shape while cooling either! Also when fitted quite a soft product and liable for chipping. Plus expensive for a 200mm length. Think I'll stick with lamination on a former 🤔

I worked in the yachting industry for over 30 years and we had a very similar product back in the nineties, it was experimental back then and used to come in sealed airtight packets. You could bend it in any direction and it hardened slowly on contact with air. however it didn't last long as it tended to crack and shrink as it dried. This looks like a much more stable product, but how expensive would it be ?

@DaveBuildsThings
@DaveBuildsThings 19 күн бұрын
I would have to think that heating the product with a high heat air gun for 10 to 15 minutes as mentioned in the video would be far hotter than any extreme summer heat. (Edited for spelling)
@joshgrimm8443
@joshgrimm8443 11 күн бұрын
@@DaveBuildsThings You would be wrong to think that. This product gets malleable at 104*. Thats not that extreme. On a hot day in the sun it would hit that temp easy especially if it was stained or painted a dark color. I see why this was invented in the uk.

Yeah, I think the company was called "Fluted Beams" It was solid hardwood boards which had been steamed then compressed, allowing it to be bent to shape, similar to traditional steam bending methods. Once opened from the packaging, the wood had to be bent to shape within a few hours or it would start to dry out and set in position.

As someone who is has made Corian worktops, it reminds me of much the same, whereby you can cut, rout or spindle the material and likewise put it on a heat bar and bend it, you can also tie strips into knots that when cooled stay as you tied them. I can see the benefit if you are going to paint the material as grain is not a problem and could have saved me lots of time over the years. However most of my work has been oak, mahogany, walnut, yew, cherry all finished with a lacquer or French polished whereby the grain is important so would not have been any use. It does seem to not require a lot of heat to bend, how do you think this may stand up in a curved bay window under a radiator would it maybe want to pull away from the wall or if stuck with a good adhesive would remain in place?

@@josephb3147Yeah except this product only needs to be 104* to start to bend. That not that extreme. Not to mention I'm sure it will be somewhat softer at even 90-95*. Thats just a normal summer day. Direct sunlight on a hot day would easily heat it up enough.

(a) So basically it's just a heat-sensitive polymer with a lot of sawdust. (b) I'd hate to have handrails made out of this during a house fire. The fire wouldn't have to be near this, just drafts from the fire, and suddenly you no longer have a functioning handrail, at a time when you may need it more than ever.
