Wood Turning Planned Chaos at the Band Saw

Another segmented turning with odd joints cut on the band saw. No sanding needed. I also made a new ring cutting fixture for making this. Not your typical segment.
The pieces were organized by types of wood. That part was planned out.
Made from Peruvian Walnut, Maple and Padauk.
This is sometimes called a bowl from a board or a band saw bowl.
I call it Chaos because all of the joints are cut free hand with no lines to follow.
Fun and easy to do using left over pieces sometimes called scraps.
Finished with Deft Lacquer and Acks Sanding Abrasive Paste and Polish
Tools used were bowl gouges and negative rake scrapers.

Never imagined that I would subscribe to a wood turning channel - turned many artefacts from a ten foot former for part of a roof construction in fibre-glass, to segmented pieces, to complex patterns for lamp posts, to miniature boxes - but you have given me ideas. Just proves someone is never too old to learn. I think I must be about three years older than your good self. It is a credit to you!
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Anthony and it sounds like you have done a lot of what I have done. I also have turned many large patterns. Some were going to be dome shapes cast in titanium and many forms for making fiberglass parts. We also made many patterns from lamp post and fancy cover plates for a place called Pioneer Square here in Portland. You sound as though you are a former pattern maker as well? Thanks for watching, Gary

I love the combination of woods and how the swirls turn out in the bowl (and it could obviously be done with any number of different woods). But, what I like even better, is how this system of cutting out those rings and then stacking them saves a lot of wood. Why waste 3-4 feet of lumber on a project that could be done with less than one? Using a variety of angles for the cutout, it'd even be possible to change the shape of the bowl. Definitely glad I watched this video: two relatively easy to grasp tricks in one.

Well, dang! I was real proud of myself for remembering about the Padauk bleeding then I see I'm not the only one! LOL! You make this look so simple, Gary yet the wood turns into art in your talented hands. Not sure I could pull it off and I don't want to embarrass myself in front of the camera! I'll just stick to banging around with the gouge and rocks. As always, you achieved a spectacular finish! You have such patience with the multiple coats required to get there. The Acks does a great job, too. Fantastic job, my friend, keep'em coming! Phil

Thank you Phil...it was a snap quiz to make sure everyone listens to my other videos LOL. Nothing at all wrong with banging around the gouge and rocks. You are the pro of that for sure. I do have a couple of dirt filled chunks of wood I plan on turning soon. I may have to sharpen up my 3/4 bowl shovel! The lacquer dries so fast the only patience I need is letting the last coat dry really good before using the Acks on it. Most of the time I try and let it sit over night. The experts say to wait a week. Yeah right! Thanks for watching my friend, Gary

Thank you Rob and I agree with the scraps statement. You should see the boxes of little future projects I have laying around. I actually have some left overs from other segmented bowls I plan using everything except the kitchen sink as they say. Thanks for watching, Gary

Hi, I have enjoyed watching your videos. I sure liked this one. I am 90 years young and i turn wood bowls. I have access to lumber I sawed years ago on my band saw mill. I use layers of different types of wood to make my bowls. Your video is something something I could do. Thank you so much.

@@ThePapa1947 thanks Gary, I did. Something struck me a while ago. You have an incredible ability to think in and visualize comple 3D patterns and shapes. It really comes out here. Thanks again.

Thanks again. I built 3D wood patterns from 2d drawings for a living. So this does help a lot. The patterns were used in the foundry to make metal castings. So they needed to be designed to be molded in sand and then be able to be pulled out in one piece and then the metal replaced the pattern. A very interesting job which I loved. Gary

Lacquer enhances the grain, very clever how you designed and executed
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Philp and yes it does enhance the grain. But the main reason is the only way I have found of keeping Padauk from bleeding it's color to the other wood was a few very light coats of lacquer sprayed on. Thanks for watching and commenting, Gary
