The REED chamfer sled kit is surprising to me. I do not like chamfer planes for the most part, but this chamfer plane sled is so fast and easy that I have no reason not to use one.

Guys, when I pitched this idea out to James I received a cool but polite reception. It was good motivation. James, I really appreciate the video and all your help getting the details dialed in for this project. I think we got this right because a jig that requires little to no setup and is easy to use is a jig that will be used!

Adding a small brass plate to the outside face of each runner that, when in use, is about 0.625 in above the sole of the plane would allow you to quickly align each runner to the sides of the plane. This centers the sled on the plane. Two 45 degree slots in the plate with two binder head screws would allow the plate to be slid out of the way to allow easy removal of the plane from the jig. Just a quick thought.

I was originally thinking that way too, but after using it they really would not help. plus with out that you can put the plane on at an angle and do end grain.

Fantastic tutorial! Thank you for sharing. I recently came across some interesting chamfer planes - the old-fashioned, wooden kind, as well as the metal, Red brand - and considered making a purchase. I'd use it on smaller projects instead of a palm router, as it makes less noise and lest dust. However, I like over the pond in the UK, and the Red tool is just too rich for my blood - hey, it's a one-trick pony - and the antique version also comes in with a hefty price tag. That's where I decided to have a look at making one myself. I'm very pleased to have stumbled across this excellent walk-through on how to make one using a block plane. As it happens, I own several, and would gladly dedicate one exclusively to put a chamfer on projects. Again, thanks for sharing.

Where the heck was this 50 years ago??? Well, didn't have those magnets fer starters..... That truly solves a few issues not the least of which is fumbling a little bitty vee groove unsure of how close to 45 it is. This rig is large enough for a blind man (me) to get it right. I have no idea if I'll ever cut another chamfer but this one I must have! Onward to the shop!

My kit came in the mail just yesterday. I’m looking forward to getting it assembled and using it. I’ve got a bunch of things I need to do beforehand, but hopefully in a couple weeks I can get this put together and get using it.

Have to agree, when I first looked at it I was a bit meh about it, but when you did the end grain,, sold! I've got some olive wood and Aussie Blackwood (Mulga😊) for the rails and stop can't wait for the kit to turn up! Cheers! Great site!

Maybe you could make a similarly functioning sled for a shooting board type of scenario. If you could push the piece up against dogs and run the plane down the edge of your bench you wouldn't need to have a separate shooting board.

I have the Hongdui chamfer plane, and it really is fun to use, but like you I find myself mostly either reaching for the regular block plane (or my trim router for precision). By relying on the block plane itself, this looks like it solves one of the big annoyances about the dedicated chamfer plane, which is that it doesn't have a sole to prevent you from taking too deep of a bite so you have to constantly adjust the cutter deeper on each pass and it's possible (née easy) to overshoot and end up with one edge slightly deeper than the others.

Sadly, I was too impatient to wait for this kit when I realized I needed it today, so I ended up doing some 1/2" chamfers by hand... time to get that order in!

Thanks for the instructional video which is awesome! As the instructions that came with the kit are not fantastic, also having some metric convertions would be really useful, for us folks who don't live in countries where the imperial measurement system is in current use. Many thanks and kind regards, Rob

I spent a good amount of time building the sled and totally failed on the threaded insert part. One of them stripped and both went through part of the chamfered edge, making some splits. Highly recommend wax and test drill bit size. Some of the hole should also be a little larger to accommodate the wider top of the threaded insert. You may need to alter the plans in terms of hole placement to avoid the chamfer issue.

It works great there. The nice thing about it is you can take the plane out rotate the plane 45° and use it skewed on end grain. I showed that on the description video a couple weeks ago. If you want to see more.

At 13:19 (time), you show the thum screws on different sides ( front left , back right), on the prototype the thum screws are on the same side/ skid was their a reason for the change to the finel version? Well done build video.

It really doesn't make that big a difference. But with the REED if you put them on opposite sides then you can see the measurement marks on either end easier.

I have an offcut from a sawmill of an ash log that is just now dry enough for woodworking and I need to make an axe handle from it. The offcut is about 10 inches wide and 7 inches tall in the center and and 4 inches tall on the edges and 7 feet long. What is the best way of sawing an axe handle blank from this piece? I feel like it would take forever to do it with a handsaw but I also do not have a frame saw. Do you think I should look for a frame saw or is there another way to get a blank form this piece?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 10 ай бұрын
A large rip tooth hand saw can do it. the frame saw will be a bit faster, but it is much easer to use.

I do not know. I haven't heard of anyone who has tried that yet. But if you check the threads on it. That's more than half the battle. If you order it and it doesn't fit we can do a return on it.
