Suggestion to prevent screws breaking, when screwing into any hardwood you should always drill a pilot hole and then add goose fat/grease to the screw before you screw it in. The screw will screw in much easier and if for any reason you need to remove the screws they will come out easier.

Nice project Keith! I keep an old 3" diameter candle in the shop and when screwing into hard wood I drag the screws across the top edge of the candle. This coats the screw with wax and and helps lubricate the threads. This has drastically reduced the number of screws I break. Keep up the good work!

Yep, wax works a charm. It's something I always do when adding hardware to guitars (small screws in to hardwood). Regular drill instead of impact for hard wood recommended. If regular drill has difficulty putting a screw in to an already drilled pilot hole, pilot hole is most likely too small.

Really glad to see you finally using some Torx screws! They are soooo much better and totally worth the cost - if you ever decide to buy some that is. Judging from the snapped head of the screw I guess they were stainless ones. The colour of the metal supports my theory. Stainless (A4) is a bit softer and more prone to doing what you experienced, so you simply shouldn't use them without pre-drilling if the resistance is too great. If a magnet won't stick to them they are stainless.

Here’s a tip. When you break a drill bit. Just grab it with your power drill or bit brace and reverse it. Comes straight out.

Great project! Next time a screw breaks off some times you can unscrew it by grabbing it with vice grips and just screw it out. Doesn't always work but if your lucky.

Great Project, the highlights for me were the added sound effects on the reconstructed section and your very British exchange with the cat. When selling them it might be a good idea to try and sell those locally to avoid the high postage.

Its not only the woods fault. When you are using the impact driver on stainless steel screws it often brakes do to the hardness of the steel. Next time just use a normal drill :-)

I love the look of the dowels-- the sapele is indeed quite complementary to the oak, and those pins are another nice little accent (and a smart reinforcement of the miters, to boot!). Do you wait until the box is out of the strap clamp glue-up to drill and insert those dowels? Well done as always!

Great video thanks! Were those screws stainless steel? I had a similar issue with some recently and I think it was a combination of that and the impact driver sheering the heads as they are quite soft compared to regular screws and the impact ripped them to pieces.

The screws could have been stainless steel, I've used them before on oak as steel can react with oak and moisture. They're much softer and I broke quite a few!

That wood is very hard and looks like a wood we called "pig wood" you find it in cheap furniture and the name came from us using it because it was a pig to work with. I never found out it's real name but it certainly lived up to the name we gave it.

I would use plugs. Drilled and then screwed, and then plugged you can choose the material to cut the plugs from. Great vid man

loopy Head thats a fact my friend as i used to manafacture fitted kitchens and bedrooms but i had to give up my work due to health issues i had a panel saw that used to cut 8x4 sheets the motor was a lot quiter than the chop saw i used on site when i was out fitting maybe the newer chop saws are quiter 🙂🙂🙂

Is the whole Etsy thing actually viable if you're not mass producing stuff? I would quite like to self-sustain this hobby if I make nice enough things, but I'm not sure if it's at all possible. How's your experience been with it so far?

I think it’s unlikely that anyone could make a living selling woodwork products on Etsy alone, unless you are doing something really unique and find a niche. There is so much competition and most people aren’t prepared to pay the prices that we need to charge in order to make a living unfortunately. For me it’s one of multiple revenue streams I make for my woodwork, but even with them all added up it doesn’t even equate to minimum wage let alone a living wage... 😩

Oh, I don't mean a living, since I'm still not living independently. I just mean offset the odd tool here and there, since it feels really hard to justify putting so much money towards something that makes nothing back. I really enjoy making stuff, but eventually you run out of places for coffee tables and cupboards in the house. Thanks for the response, by the way! I've always seen Etsy from the view of the consumer and less the person producing things, but maybe it's a better idea to just look around locally. Perhaps it'll just have to be a bit of a money-sink hobby after all.

I like watching your videos, very constructive etc, but I would like to point out that your still not wearing eye protection, I would like to carry on watching then, but if something happened to your eyes, you wouldn't be able to make more videos etc. I'm sure you girlfriend would want you to wear eye protection to. Keep up the good work, but wear some goggles. Kind regards Vince
