I feel like we should be hearing taps. As I am getting older, if this was me, I would use a black marker on A (cap and jug) red marker on B (cap and jug). Jim, this video is so totally why I haven’t missed a single one. You show us even the most talented can mess up. We need to see this. Thank you.

Even better, label the bottles, along with the caps? The bottles contain the product, not the caps.

@@SpragueWoodturning it would be great to have different coloured labels from the company. But even government do same thing BC health card and drivers license look the same! I know presented my health card at a road side check, and yes I do have the license too! LOL

😂 I loved the glamour shot at the end, it made me laugh instead of being sad at the loss of such a beautiful piece. You gave it your all! I would’ve done the same. Sorry it wasn’t savable. I’ve heard of people losing an entire bottle of resin just by making the simple mistake of putting the hardener cap on the resin bottle. Thanks for showing all the aspects of working with resin.

At one stage there i thought you had it licked. I totally get what you say when you said that sometimes a piece just doesn't want to play ball with you and fights all the way. My weeping resin piece was still weeping after a year before my wife made me retire it. i appreciate your persistence and commend you on your attitude. Thanks for not giving up

Jim, Thanks for this video. Most YT videos never show the fails or mistakes. This piece was not a total loss because you learned a valuable lesson and shared that lesson with us and now, we have learned it. As was demonstrated by the fabulous ending under the blue handled maul, this chunk of wood gave it's all so that we could all learn. It should not be mourned any more than the shavings that you clean up after a turning. All that is left on the shop floor is needed to produce the finished bowl, platter or whatever you are making. It is a fact of woodworking that some of the wood will end up as scrap, sawdust, cut-offs, shavings or pieces that must be "chucked" Look at it this way - we all learned how NOT to mix resin - a good thing to know and something we will all use in our own turnings. Thanks again for helping us with this valuable video.

Well even as the piece was giving you the old one finger salute my mind was still trying to come up with ways to rescue it. The hammer was not one I was considering but it was a fitting end. I have a bowl I tried to rescue sitting on my work bench that I throw odds and ends in. I’m thinking that a Viking funeral with Thor’s Hammer may be in order. Next week all over the World defective bowls will be traveling to Valhalla! lol

I'm going through your vids in a really random order as I just came upon your channel, and I'd actually watched the redux of this project before this video - so it was nice to see the origin story :D I also love that the vid is titled "The Rescue" and ends with a sledgehammer to the face XD Absolutely brilliant! I wrote this in another comment; but it really is refreshing to see you keep the mishaps and learning curves in your uploads - you are very clearly remarkably skilled and knowledgable, but more than that, you are honest with it and that makes you 100x better than any "perfect" project maker. Now that was a perfect send off when shotguns are frowned upon. Luckily, I can take my 'mishaps' up to the cabin and use them as targets. I'm glad you tried to save this piece rather than just tossing it to the side. Too many give up on pieces (& other things in life) without putting in the effort to save it. You will never know what could have been if you didn't try or as I use to tell my students, you only fail when you don't try/put in the effort. We learn more from our mistakes than getting it 'perfect' the 1st time. Keep up the great work.

Very nice send off thank you for the prices you care for the barrel yarns wife is still going through cancer treatments the piece I talk to you in the past did the same with that one I finally drilled a hole through the center Mark held it over fire with a chain and burned it till it’s dust

Enjoyed seeing where the breaks occurred - and where they didn't! That is, not along the original resin/wood boundaries. So even though it didn't cure properly the original casting was quite strong!

The send-off that was totally funny I've never worked with epoxy resin but I spent my whole life as a automobile painter using poly urethane clears and lots of pearls and you know once in awhile s*** happens like that you do amazing work.

JIm: people could buy those pieces for shop reminders when they use resin. The summer Olympics could have used it for a discus. All in all you have given a wealth of information that I know turners are going to appreciate. I used to heat my shop with some of my mistakes. Take care and stay safe.

Bummer Jim, you tried and that’s how we all learn. Your tips, instruction and techniques are valued by all. To put it nicely, sometimes doodoo occurs. Thanks for posting this Jim. Sometimes things happen but I see a lot of pretty pieces of walnut that could be used in a cast with cutoffs. Might need to grind some resin off but all may not be completely lost. Thank you for showing the Hercules in action and a little closer. It is helpful to learn from your mastery of the tool.

That was a noble effort! I paint and I’m always reluctant to just give up and gesso over a terrible painting and re-purpose the canvas. This was an interesting saga and, since you couldn’t shoot it, this was the next best send off.

I know what you mean about some pieces not wanting to be finished. I started a bowl 6 months ago and just wasn't feeling it. Paduke, red dust over everything, put it aside. Needed a gift for someone and didn't have anything I wanted to turn and give away so I bit my lip and put the bowl on and finished it. Turned out beautiful and they loved it when I presented it to them. Sometime you just have to fight through it.

So sorry to hear of your loss Jim. I, personally, would have used some M-80s but several family members work for a fireworks store so I have easy access year round. Time to get back on the horse.

I'm sorry that you couldn't save the platter, but as a chainsaw carver I totally understand not wanting to give up on a piece. But when you hit that platter. Thank you for sharing your work and how sometimes you just gotta let it go. I laughed when you showed it at the end. Take care.

Oh God Jim, I felt bad when you had to break that plate in pieces, almost as if I had done it to one of my turnings. I share your obsession about rescuing turnings and often learn out of these processes. I had a little adventure with a bowl that I blew up when I tried to improve ma scraping! I almost trown it out but decided to pratice repairs with CA glue, resin (pro series), alcool tinting and ... many hours. Luckily I could save the piece ... that altough imperfect is quite presentable. All my condolenses for your walnut platter.; It will go better next week.

Oh this killed me! I was so hopeful you could save it, but it was clearly an obstinate piece. On the other hand I was thoroughly impressed by how it behaved under the persuasion of a splittin' maul wielded by an expert hand. A bittersweet ending. Thanks for showing us. (And thanks for putting the degrees in Fahrenheit for those of us who are Celsius illiterate. 😂)

I like to mount my failed projects on the wall of my wood shop, as a sort of anti-trophy, to remind me not to make the same mistake again. But a sledgehammer sounds good too. My current project is a Valentine’s Day bowl, with a resin heart on the bottom. I have already screwed it up twice, but I am still trying to rescue it. Why? 2 reasons! It’s now February 11 - not enough time to start a new one, and maybe the bigger reason to keep trying… I’ve been videotaping the whole project, and I don’t want to waste all that footage!

If you needed that big sledge to do the final decoration the resin must have been strong. :P I think i would have done the same thing you did Jim just some days before. hehe You made my day today because i have spend 14 hours in an airport here for sending my fiance back home to pick up some more bugs for me when i come after during the summer. I came home and saw the video and i could smile a little bit again. :) Better luck next video. Greetings Hans Olav

Jim such things always happen - to all of us. Professional or not. Such is life. I am totally feeling with you since I messed up a window color painting big time once. The painting was 70 x 100 cm. I didnt wait over night to let one color dry before I applied the next one. So the colors mixed where they shouldnt have. Guess what? That piece landed in the garbage and I had to start all over again after 2 months of careful work. One wrong decision and all the effort before wasnt useable any longer. But: such lessons need to happen so that we always stay careful and enhance our learning curve. The window colors are also expensive for such a large painting since I need more than 1 bottle per color. Just like with the resin. Those materials are costly but worth the effort when used with attention and care. And the outcome when everything works like it should is always so satisfying. For me thats the motor which makes it worthwhile.

At least you tried! The rice bags are a neat trick ... have to try that. I had a piece that was just kicking my behind all week ... resin wouldn't cure right in a knot hole, warping even though it was down to about 8%, etc.. I was ready to pitch it, but guess what ... SWMBO said she loves it. I gave it to her on the understanding that she would never show it to anybody and I would never have to look at it again!

Great effort to repair this piece, nice of you to share so we can all learn with you. I know I have had many projects that fight me all the way, sometimes they go to the wood stove, other times I say haha I won. Great video!
