Hey Skyler, your boxes are getting better and better. This one is certainly more of a challenge. I didn't check, but you could maybe create a playlist of your box-making videos from easiest to hardest.

Skylar, sometimes being a little bit off with centering things makes them more "believable" and highlights that it is hand-made and not churned out in some sweatshop. A really cute box.

Beautiful boxes! The flower is centered well enough. So nice you will start selling your wonderful creations! No doubt they will sell fast.

Thank you. The storm was pretty bad but luckily we are ok. Two big trees fell in our yard ( one within 2 feet of the well) but didn’t destroy anything. We were without power and internet for a while but luckily we have lots of solar power, a generator and a starlink for internet. All good and back to normal

That’s a really lovely box. I’m sure people would love to buy these, I remember you sometimes mentioning you are a beginner but I think you are a skilled craftsperson. We all beat ourselves up and think we can do better but other people don’t notice any mistakes they just see a fabulous handmade unique piece. I’m waiting to hear how you get on selling these.

I think it’s fine if the flower is slightly off center, just means alot that it wasn’t made in a factory and besides nature is never perfectly centered but pleasing to the eye.

Using mineral spirits makes sawdust mud which fills the grain, doesn't "clean" it off. Compressed air does the trick.

Something I have not seen in your shop is a wood lathe. For the flowers I would have glued the petals in place with no finish on them or the lid. Then I would have used a liquid poly and a brush to flood the flower and lid. Wipe off any obvious excess and then put it in the lathe and spin it at a sufficient speed to make the excess poly flow out from the center. Pipe cleaners work well to get in small places to wipe off excess finish. Stop the lathe occasionally to wipe excess finish. When no excess finish shows up, stop the lathe and let it dry. I have a small 12 inch bench lathe that comes in really handy for odd things that aren't turning related. Just a thought.

Hi Skyler, Those boxes are truly unique and have “eye popping” appeal. Absolutely stunning 😍. Any issues or concerns regarding the flower pedals not adhering to the top lid?Does not appear that there is much surface area on the bottom of the petals for the glue to hold them securely to the lid?
@woodworkingwithSkyler

Not at all I prefinish the flowers and lid but mask off the place where glue goes.

What an amazing project. Since I have the same tools as you, there’s nothing stopping me from making your latest project. I have plenty walnut, but since I leave near St. Louis aspen is not too available. Can you recommend another light-grained hardwood to use in place of aspen ? Thanks 😊

On your marked up box pattern, what does the 6/4 mean? six/quarters? = 1-1/2", 6-1/4"? I'm measuring 6-1/8" on the pattern, flat to flat. How tall is the box by itself?
@woodworkingwithSkyler
@woodworkingwithSkyler 5 ай бұрын
I think was just a marking for myself to make a template. 6 in outside diameter and 4 inside that way makes easier for future to make the box

@@woodworkingwithSkyler Thank you. With all of the different types of blades out there, it’s nice to know which ones are being used. Those are my favorite type of blade to use. Lines are straight where needed, they don’t seem to get away from me, and the blowout is minimal. Keep up the great work, and putting out amazing content. I, for one, truly appreciate your videos, and learn a lot from them!

@SawdustandSplinters love your channel title! Those are beautiful...I didn't know about this magazine...can't find the link in your comments...can you please give it to me? I tried searching in my library and chapters indigo...neither have it If you plan on making many...you might want to consider round stickers that come off easily to save time prepping for the glue up. Perhaps find a way to cut your blue tape into circles...leave it on the roll and use a scalpel blade??
@fdort3971
@fdort3971 8 ай бұрын
It's your creation...don't apologise for your decisions! It turned out lovely! The ones that end up off center just embellish with leaves...nobody but you will know...as far as clamping the flowers...how about a rubber ball with an elastic running through it? The ball will sit in the center and run the elastic between the petals. That will free you up to work on the next pieces
