Woofer Spider Worn Out? MUST WATCH BEFORE REFOAMING

When speakers are in need of new foam surrounds due to rotting. It is a good time to inspect all components of the speaker before ordering parts. Depending on how much use or abuse some speakers may need more than just new surrounds. In the video I show you what to look for.

Well done video. A lot of people don't realize that spiders can also fail with heavy use and age. Most last a pretty long time, but some don't, as you have shown here. All depends on the thickness and layering of the spider.

@@SavingVegas would be interesting. A full replacement will definitely permit the driver to move more and also increase punchiness of the sound. More control.

Apparently I have a weird CV. My 1993 VS 120s have the Orange rubber coating, but there no foam - its a intact almost cloth like surround that the orange rubber coating is on. The Orange layer is flaking off, but the surround looks like new and works like new. I have some CV re foam kits, but notice they do not have the underlying layer of surround - they are just foam. I decided not to re edge them - they seem to me to sound as good as they did new -No loss of bass - no distortion of any kind. Where can you get the correct CV replacement that is rubber on surround core?

I have a pair of VS-120s. The woofers just had foam and spiders repalced.

There's a few companies out there like Simply Speakers, Speaker Exchange and Springfield Speaker to name a few.

You could try contacting Brew City Audio, he sells on Ebay. He doesn't always list everything he has but if you contact him and let him know what you need he should be able to help you out. Tell him Saving Vega's sent ya 👍

So I just got a of dx7 from a second hand store and on woofer has trouble springing back. They need reformed and I think I can do that l. I'm a little scared to change the spider. If I just refoam them they will still work but just not as efficient as if it had a new spider?

They will definitely still work, the new foam will help a bit. Bass may not sound as tight and clean as intended. The speakers in this video were a costumers and after I repaired them he said they didn't seem to have as much low end bass as they did prior to my repair. Although he was using a lower power amplifier to drive them and they would require some break in time after my repairs. I had tested them with about 350 watts per at 4 ohms after I repaired them and they sounded great! Very noticeable improvement. If you are not comfortable with doing such a repair yourself or don't want to spend the extra to have someone else do it there's nothing wrong with using as is with new foam. I would just be cautious of how hard you drive them. With that said the difference in sound after the repair, in my opinion, was worth the hassle of replacing the spider.

Do you happen to have a vid of the spider replacement(s) proposed in this? I've only ever seen spider replacements in a complete re-cone (as in, not attempting or taking steps to keep the old cones in the process). What is (was) your technique in keeping old cone(s) and replacing spider(s) only? ...Also, did you find anything wrong with the voice coil(s) or clearances on these as well?

Geart video. Question for you if you don't mind. I just replaced the foam on a set of d-9's, which were given to me, so I have no clue what they sounded like before I received them. Just hooked them up, and both have a terrible distortion in them. If I turn the base down it gets better. Any idea what might be going on.? Thanks

Did you remove the dust cap and shim the voice coil when refoaming? Could be the coil rubbing. With the speaker off when you push the cone in and out does it make a scratching sound?

@Saving Vega's no I didn't remove the dust cap. Yes I believe what that's what I'm hearing. Thank you for your time. This was the first attempt at replacing the foam. Lesson learned

No problem, having that voice coil centered is very crucial. It happens a lot I think because of Simply Speakers refoam video that is so popular. He's not wrong in the video saying you don't have to shim the coil but if it is your first time it is a good idea, foolproof way .

It's just a crappy stamped steel 20$ woofer just recone or replace the driver it's not like it's a special kind of woofer

It's actually a die cast aluminum basket not steel. It is a 12 inch woofer from a set of AT-12s that have a ribbed cone. Aftermarket recone kits from companies such as SS Audio do not have recone kits for these with ribbed cones. When it comes to Cerwin Vega original is always better. Thanks for watching.
