We used that QSC with Cerwin Vega V-152 at the start of the warehouse AV project, it was simply terrible. Behringer was also a known budget amp that was a little less than stated. Never been a fan of the budget PA amps but keep hearing Crown budgets are good. We ended up with Yamaha's, starting with P3200 then it was a rack of P3500S and P5000S for all channels. My lad now uses a P3200 with Cerwin Vega V152 often.

If we cannot get the TS parameters of the drivers, and information is as rare as unicorn poop, I am guessing the majority of Cerwin Vega out there are all measuring different with the majority repaired with any old part available. Still looking for the TS parameters of the bass drivers in the V-152.

Have you done much work with the old unloved V-152 speakers, no one seems to be able to find TS parameters for the bass drivers in these old things, yet I actually like the bass drivers in these. I have even used them for a budget cinema all be it as smalls in a 5/2 and later 7/2 set up. My lad loves the old Cerwins, wife hates them, I sometimes wonder, if I had the TS parameters, could I rebuild them into three ways with nicer cabinets and please all of us.

If you paid 300 to have 2 d-9 woofers refoamed and reconed and the center caps came out tilted like 30° off. What would you do? Should i deemand the shop fix it, or am I overreacting?
@SavingVegas

It is frustrating when you pay a professional and end up with results like you mentioned. I'm not sure where you are from, but for me, my cost on 2 15" re-cone kits would be roughly $200CAN. Even if you look at it like that, you paid $50 a woofer to be re-coned which isn't terrible but I would still expect everything to come out as good as it did from factory. If the issue is just the dust cap logo that is turned but still centered on the cone I would just mount them in the cabinet so they are straight and make new hole for the fasteners. If all you did was bring the woofers in without the cabinets it's pretty easy for them to not know which way is straight if they didn't take note of how the originals were. This is why I like to have the entire speaker to work on so I can mount the woofers and then install the dust cap, also to test when completed.

@SavingVegas sadly the shop had the complete speaker set, boxes and all with them during the whole repair, because I specifically asked for them to rebuild the crossovers but it seems like all the did was rebuild the 15's and sprayed some D5 on the crossover plate. Unfortunately, the repair did take longer than the shops estimate, so I was out of town for work and had to send someone in my stead to pick them up (due to the shop demanding I do, despite their original assurances of them storing the speakers for a few weeks being fine) and my mom ended up going for me and she just really doesn't know what to lookout for. I finally managed to get someone on the phone again, and they offered new center caps, but I decided to just clock the woofers so the logo is straight. The shop also shorted half of my woofer screws so there are only 4 in each 15 now. Im just disappointed because I expected a higher caliber of craftsmanship coming from a guy who built HiFi jbl speakers. I think i will just do this sort of work on my own from now on.
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas 5 күн бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately this happens quite a bit from what I hear. Most shops get to the point where they think people will either not notice or not care and the quicker they can get a job done with little effort the better. I myself do restorations for people but I am not a full time shop and I really take my time and like to pay attention to every detail. With that said I don't take on a lot of work and most of what I am doing is more costly but also above average work. It would probably be difficult for most shops to do what I do and stay in business, to be honest I usually don't end up making a lot on each restoration. It also takes me a lot longer then most shops but it's about the final results and the customer loving the end results.

I have not been inside one of those speakers so I don't really know. Most of the time these older speakers don't have complex x-overs. As far as just doing a simple re-cap the complexity shouldn't really matter as long as you can find the proper value of caps and simply replace. If doing a full rebuild with new inductors there are other things you need to know. Having the schematics helps greatly but if not you need to be able to figure out the value of the inductors as well as their DC resistance so you can match them.

If I push down on one side of the driver cone & hear scraping, but not if I evenly press down on the entire cone, is there a problem?
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas 5 күн бұрын
There is a good chance that the voice coil is not 100% centered. This can be an issue depending on the tolerances of the coil gap in the magnet. I have had woofers that were exactly what you mentioned and they are still going strong. I have also had woofers that eventually failed because of this. What I would do is download a tone generator, hook just the woofer up to your amp, play a 10Hz test tone so the woofer moves up and down slowly without hearing a tone and slowly increase the volume to get some cone movement. While doing this if there is any voice coil rub you will hear it and it will have to be re-centered. If not I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I have seen this done with lots of different speakers and if it sounds good to you then just enjoy them, they are your speakers. My concern when putting subwoofers or any other replacement driver is the changes in the impedance curve. If the change is making the impedance too low it can be very demanding for some amplifiers. I know not everyone has the ability to measure a speakers impedance curve but my suggestion would be to keep an eye on the heat being generated by your amp. I'm not saying it is always going to drop the impedance, sometimes it may raise it.

great videos. one qustion though... I understand putting the bracing inside to make the strucure more solid , but... does it not change thequality of the resonant and sounf of the speaker ? im not that purist but still there must have been reason why they originally didnt do it ?
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas 5 күн бұрын
The reason they didn't do it is because it costs them more money to do so. More material, more weight when shipping and more time to construct. All this adds up to is more cost and the average person is never going to notice most likely. When you are listening to a speaker you want to hear the speaker, not all the noise that the box is making. I really should have put more bracing in this speaker and probably will be in the future.

Hey Preston...I came across your channel after trying to find ANY decent info and specs on a pair of CV HP-215s I recently purchased for use in the shop. The speakers play nice, but lack the low-frequency thump and possess piercing highs...not what I expected from sub cabinets with four 15" woofers; I'm thinking that's due to the older Pioneer VSX-D1S receiver I hooked them to, so am currently looking for an equalizer to help, but I did read that these tend to need a LOT of power. As it stands, I'm in Mode 1 on the receiver (130 watts per channel) so I can't imagine that is the cause, especially since they play without the distortion, just not overly deep. I did find a cerwin vega fans forum online, but there is no way to register for logging in, and I've pretty much tapped out google. Is there any information you can pass along?
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas 5 күн бұрын
The CV HP-215s are not known for producing low frequencies that well. If you pull the woofers out you will be surprised how small the motor structure is on them. They are more of a monitor type speaker that I would strongly suggest running a subwoofer with. Trying to push too much lower frequencies with them could cause the coil to overheat and fail on you. Unfortunately they're a lower quality CV speaker, thin cheaply made cabinets and weaker woofers and tweeters compared to most of their other models. I would use them with a high pass filter, somewhere around 80Hz to 100Hz and run a subwoofer or two to pick up the low end. You should really be able to get some volume out of them that way.

Very much like most of their models. I don't think accuracy was their main focus for a lot of their speakers. I believe their main focus was high sensitivity ratings. I see a lot of their x-over networks designed to simply just stop each driver from playing out of its usable range and that's it. Of the CVs I have measured so far there is usually a lot of overlap from woofer to mid to tweeter. Even most of their woofers in the older models don't even have low pass filters on the woofers.

Cerwin Vega definitely has a formidable following. Their vintage stuff is super popular in many countries. That's why I just can't wrap my head around why they're not reviving old models and whole vintage series, or at least making replacement parts available. Heck, I think that if they provided flatpacked cabinets and diy kits for old and discontinued models, they might outsell even their new stuff 😅 I know that the mainstream hifi enthusiasts swear to tiny bookshelf matchbox speakers or "microscopic bluetooth sound emmitting things", and rarely turns their volume knob above 8-9 o'clock in fear of domestic violence or being bullied by their neighbors for their taste of music. But Cerwin Vega isn't for the mainstream, Gene Czerwinski pretty much said it all with his "loud is good" quote. If you need a replacement tweeter diaphragm or a midrange driver for those classic models in my country, you have to sell your house and lose a few organs to afford them. And that second-hand market is a little bit like gambling, as stuff might be listed as working. But once you get it, you might discover that the voice coil is cooked or even burned to a crisp. Cerwin Vega should look at what behringer is doing with the whole vintage synth thing. Re releasing clones of old classics... it might just be a question of time before behringer makes cerwin vega clones. 😂 I ❤ the saving vegas channel! Keep up the good work 🫡

@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas 21 күн бұрын
So, there are some issues with the VS-120s right from the factory. It really just depends on your listening position and how they are set up. When measuring the frequency response on axis with the tweeter from a distance of 1 meter, there is a massive hole in the response at the xover point between tweeter and midrange. This is due to the drivers being out of phase with each other and canceling each other out, but again, it depends on where the speakers are sitting from you. You could try reversing the positive and negative wires on the tweeters. It may improve the sound from where you're sitting.

EXPERIMENT: Put a good woofer in a speaker box with a 5.6 mh inductor and a resister (if needed to decrease woofer level). Then mount an open 5" full range driver on top of the speaker box (outside the box). For quick fix, use plasticine, modling clay or lots of Blue Tack to mount the open driver (sloped back a bit for more relaxed sound and more 3D). Wire the open FR driver up straight with no crossover/filter on it, with external wires connected in parl with the binding posts. Preferably 8 ohm drivers for more impedance with the parl connected whole signal FR drivers. Best sound ever, once you balance the driver levels. Most likely you won't have to resist the open FR drivers (hopefully). It's dipole and sounds like panel speakers (for so cheap). Medrange is so clean! And if there is any REVERB in a recording you are going to hear it! Try a sweep on it! 😅

Replacing the foam surround on a woofer is a pretty simple and common repair. There are many speakers that use foam surrounds, some still do to this day. Many shops that repair speakers will be able to do this, and it's not an expensive thing to get done either. The midranges on the VS120 should not need this done. They should have a treated cloth surround on them.

I have done the odd xover rebuild for people by just shipping the xovers themselves. I'm in Canada, so international shipping can be a pain and isn't all that cheap either. As for recommending someone else, there's 2 guys in the US who are dedicated to Cerwin Vega as well. They know of me, and we are in a lot of the same CV Facebook groups. I'm positive they would be more than able to get you set up with a good quality xover rebuild. With that said, there are some things I disagree with them on when it comes to recapping xovers. Mostly just the fact that they feel using the same poor quality components that CV used during manufacturing is better. Something to do with retaining the "Cerwin-Vega!" sound signature. I'm not even really sure what that means because the better quality parts don't color the sound and let's you hear what the drivers in the speaker actually sound like. Mainly, I just disagree with using electrolytic caps for tweeter and midrange filtering. Even for low pass filters on woofers, I did in this video use an electrolytic cap for the woofer. That will be changing soon, I plan on taking these D9s up another level very soon. I'm sure they would be willing to build you a good quality set of xovers by request. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h7efosajzLPagac.htmlsi=7MqyCc5TNDBT_Mp2 Here is a link to their KZfaq video that should tell you all you need to know, as well as how to get a hold of them.

What you MUST know to replace a woofer in a 2-way / 3-way: (both old one and new one) 1.) Impedance 2.) Qts 3.) Required volume 4.) frequency response 5.) sensitivity / efficiency 6.) physical dimensions

I’ve a question I see different sizes (6x30 or 5/20) 6 amp fuses. Which is the correct one to use?

One effect is that you get a mesmerizing red ring in your woofer. You won't hear the difference after your woofer hypnotized you 😂😂

why replace . rebuild with better parts . lord of bass sells all the parts and just about anyone with a brain can do it . there are 1000s of videos how to
@SavingVegas

Yeah, that was kind of the whole point of the video.

i think the vs sound muddy and lackluster i have replaced woofers with much better sounding woofers form another brand but before i did that i took the woofer out and looked at the fs and qts of the woofer and matched them with some larger xmax woofers that i had laying around that made the sound fuller

Most of the VS speakers I have had in the shop tend to have that muddy sound to them for sure, you're right about that. 99% of the time it is caused by the poor quality x-over parts, considering their age they are all pretty much ready for a re-cap. When re-capped with decent quality caps the clarity improves greatly.

I used to sweat building my subwoofer boxes exactly to spec and confirm with REW but since I started using a DSP I realized I can hit my target curve regardless of the raw measurement..now I can build the box a little small for more power handling and tune that accompanying peak out.

you didnt show how to "properly refoam" a speaker. you just talked about how that one was bad,...but NOT bad. pretty sure I just wasted 4:44.

Where in the title or description does it say I show you how to refoam a speaker in this video? Oh, right, it doesn't. I do however, in the description, describe what the video is about as well as give a link to a video where I refoam a woofer. Looks like you wasted your time watching a video you weren't looking for, as well as wasting time typing your comment because you couldn't read the description which caused me to waste time to reply, lol.

@@SavingVegas the TITLE bonehead. "How to Properly Refoam your Speakers"(which outright says "how-to"),..which you KNEW 99% of the people clicking on it would think thats what it meant. Dont act like I'M the idiot that "misinterpreted" your meaning.

You have completely overlooked the MOST important thing. CV speakers are all ported, and each cabinet and port are designed around the parameters of the woofer used, to tune the bass response of the box with that woofer, based on the Vas, Q, and free air resonance of the woofer.
@CuttinChopps

But the point of the video demos the reason why NOT to just throw any driver in your existing cabinet. Your point being true still, falls under "other variables" he mentioned. His point was made without your level of granularity just fine.

Use Parts Express.

@@eugeniahobbs41What does Parts Express have to do with this? Yes they do sell woofers, ports and other components, but I doubt they have parts that matches every Cerwin Vega speaker configuration (or any speaker-brand for that matter).
