In the late 1970s, the Four Wooten Brothers went to Denbigh HIgh School (about a mile from my house). Can you imagine going toa talent show there? They regularly played together at Busch Gardens amusement Park in Williamsburg, Va.

All 5 Wooten Brothers used to live in Newport News VA, because I went to Denbigh High School with Reggie, Joseph, Roy and Rudy (RIP). I only saw Victor when the Wooten's played my Ring Dance in 1976...the same year Roy (best snare drummer in VA All State competition) graduated. Wonderful guys and always so humble! Never knew Reggie's name was Elijah until I saw facebook address above! Roy signed my copy of Modern Drummer Anniversary issue and wrote he would be famous some day, as he was picking up parts for his first "drumitar" at the AL&M on Rt. 17. I was the drummer in a local 3-man Christian metal band "Vessel" in 1987-89 and our bass player Scott actually took a few lessons from Victor...that's a cool memory!

And they’re still inspiring a new generation of virtuosic players. From Tosin to Tim Henson to Ichika Nito to Evan Brewer and on and on and on. Now, be mindful that these players are not just great musicians or instrumentalists, but they’re also young. So compositions often fit a younger person’s aesthetic. Ichika, for example, releases mostly short sort of interludes. Tim of Polyphia has a very hip hop/pop structure to his compositions, even if they’re mostly instrumental. Cats like MonoNeon, he’s a bit older, and the people lucky enough to work with him? Man... so much great material coming out these days. Just so long as we don’t get that regressive biting stuff trying too hard to actually BE Zep or whatever (what were they called, wolfmother? Yeesh), there’s nothing but progress in so many avenues of music. Yes, there’s also the most boring trap beats with mumble rappers over top. That’s to keep the riffraff out of the way when we’re on our way to a Snarky Puppy show.

I have always considered them to be amongst the best musicians but this is the first time Ive actually seen the much talked about bass guitar showmanship that is part of Victors skill set. Ive always considered Victor as kind of the Jimi Hendrix of bass because of his speed. Now I realize that he’s much much much more than that. Never stops surprising me.
