The handle and scabbard are made of black and white micarta, which underlines the author's idea. The blade is welded from author's crucible steel.

@@fz-makingknives3663 it is not a compliment, the blade is missing the tanto signature design, the blade was also not folded metal, and the blade wasn't differentially treated (soft iron back, firm tempered steel blade). Not to mention your honing could use some work, there are many grades of whet stone. Functionally yes it is a knife in a pretty package, but not a tanto, nor an example of a traditional japanese production.

@onlybugwit

What exactly is Wootz?
@patrickwalley9803
@patrickwalley9803 2 жыл бұрын
@@onlybugwit it's a crucible steel made Frome ore with a particular chemical composition found in only one mine in the world. Aside from the ore composition a crucible is used to make it into a usable metal after which it is worked within a specific temperature window to produce a billet with a specific crystalline structure. That structure is what creates the pattern in the steel. Blades have to be ground from the billet because any further forging past the billet stage destroys that crystaline structure and it is no longer wootz. This guy is making pattern welded steels (incorrectly called Damascus) and plain crucible steel. He is making amazing blades of very high quality. He is an amazing craftsman but he is not making wootz

All woozt steel is is crucible steel if we're talking about the classical use it'd be referred to as Damascus. And as a fine gentleman said somewhere here in the chat it is a tyep of tanto and is commonly used in wedding ceremonies.

The fact that he is melting steel together is proof that is isn't wootz at all. He is an amazing craftsman but from all of his videos Ive seen I really feel like he honestly has no clue what wootz actually is.

Just putting all the ingredients together and melting them doesnt make it wootz Damascus. The impurities that give wootz its distinct properties get burned off if any oxygen makes it into the crucible, which is why you're supposed to seal it. If the impurities you needed were there, it would have crumbled like a muffin as soon as you smacked it with that hammer, because real wootz needs to have the exterior of the cake decaborized, then cycled above and below glowing several times, then it needs to be carefully worked until it solidifies and forms the carbide structure that gives it that distinctive etch that looks like water on a rolling boil with cluster sheets of carbides. It's a nice piece, but it isn't wootz. The etch never lies.

I respectfully suggest that you misunderstand the term "Wootz steel". The term " Damascus steel" could be used to discuss the the way the knife was made, but not Wootz. Excellent video and a very beautiful knife. Very well done.
