In this video I will show how to work with the aperture blades in Canon FD 50mm 1:1.8 (new version).
If there was oil on the aperture blades or the aperture was just sticky or rusty, just like this old lens.
Remember to set a mark befor you disassemble the aperture assembly, so you can put things back in again.
I use Isopropylalcohol 99% to clean the aperture blades and parts of aperture assembly.

Using your video I was able to clean the blades of my canon 50mm 1.8. Now It works like its supposed to.

Hi Mikeno. thx a lot for your video. I was able to clean the aperture for a 100m f2.8 thx to you !! To be honnest I more or less got crazy when trying to mount the silver ring on the back side at the end. the back part was not well set up and it was impossible to put the screws. At the end what I did is to put the aperture ring to A (after 32 in my case) and finally (after 8 tentatives !!!) it was ok. Your job is great because you relly explain what you do and how the lens works and this is more than appreciate. Note that I will probably try next month to clean a 300mm F4 FD new, so if you have tips to dismount it and access to the lens I will be very eager to read them. Take care and keep on feedin,g us with new videos !!!

Hi Mike, great video, as always. But can you show or tell us, how to align the red dot on the plate to the main red dot on the lens? I could find it until now. I can"t use this lens on the camera to avoid damage of the mirror. Best regards and many thanks from Germany. K

I think you didn't finish to mount it right. The red dots never get aligned!

hey. first of all thanks for the video. i have a question about the mount in the back 11:30 min in the video. the screws on my mount are some kind of stuck. for dissamling you turn it to the left, right? i try it but it doesnt work. what could help to loosen up the screws a bit. im scared that i will destroy the screws completely. thanks for your help =)

First of all, it's really important that you use a JIS crosshead screw driver, and sometimes it's a good thing if you use a little bigger screw driver than what you would normally do, just to have a better grip in the screwhead, and yes, you have to unscrew counter clockwise (turning to the left..). In some lenses the factory use thread lock to prevent the screws from loosen itself, but with 1-2 drops of nail polish remover, let it sit around 4-5 min, it should be possible to soften the thread locker and then unscrew. DO NOT use a PH screw driver, you will most of the time damage the screw head.

The orange stuff was most likely some oil/grease which solidified due to the contact with water and heat.

@@tomasHabo oh dont worry, i realized that its because they have a system so that the aperture only closes when the shutter is fired to allow for more accurate focusing

I have the same fd lens but is always lock at 5,6. No matter how much i try to put it on 22 or 1.8, it always goes 5.6 when i shoot. any idea on how to fix it? thank you vm

I can’t get the red dots to align, hence can’t fit the objective into the camera. Any fix for that?

Para poner los 2 punto rojo en la misma posicion tiene que apretar el boton de desbloqueo del objetivo de la camara que es metalico i luego girar la corona ,la tapa con las palancas de la diafragma .Un saludo para todos .
