In this video I will show you how to clean the front and back lensgroup's lens elements in Canon FD 50mm 1:1.4 (New version)
I use both "ECLIPSE" and lighter fluid and "PEC-PAD" lens tissue to clean the lens element's.
Remember to set a small mark inside the lens on the aperture system so you are sure where the aperture assembly has to sit correct when assemble the lens again.

For anyone following this excellent tutorial, there's a bit missing at the end during reassembly. Notice that the two red dots do not align. When replacing the rear of the lens with the aperture controls, follow the instructions about lining up the pins/forks but also note the following. 1. you need to hold the release button in on the side of the lens, 2. once inserted, twist the black ring until the red dots line up, 3. hold the black ring or it will spring back whilst you press in the final silver ring (the actual mount). Once the silver ring is back in the lens the black inner part with the aperture controls won't spring back round. Screw back together and it'll work when remounted.

Hi Mike and thx once again (you should be fed up for all these similar compliments but they are true !! :)) for this wonderful video. I was able to repair this lens boght on ebay fr 40 euros I think but full of fungus at the rear (On the 2 last lenses). Thx for the tip with the rubber which stops the lense inside. I didn't know this way of building and was not able to unmount it before your video. For the community who follows you not also for those who have the same issue as I that you don't need to unbuild the rear bayonet to access the 2 lenses in the rear : you just need a spanner to unlock the rear one and then with Mike's tip you can free the lens under by carefully (it's very thin indeed) retire the rubber. Then with a succer you can get the lens and clean them all. On my side the previous owner probably tried to dismount the rear bayonet but ruins 2 screws on 3.. So I was not able to dismount it. If tghis can serves to anyone, he is welcome. Waiting for your next video with impatience.

Really like your instructional videos on assembling and putting back Canon FD lenses. Your explanation about the procedure in outstanding. I did the vintage lens fever with my Canon R6 and EOS 5D mark III. Your videos on the 50mm 1.4 is helpful with the 50mm 1.8 and 35mm 2.8 that I need to clean with the possibility of removing some haze and fungus. Now I have 135mm 2.8 that I need to do the same but either you don't have a video with that lens and it seems that nobody else have one either. Do you know if you can make one or if you know of who has one done already. Thank you for you help.

Well, to disassemble an "easy" lens, you should think it in that way, that there are 3 different thing's (maybe other small detail's) you can do with an old manual focus lens: The aperture system with the aperture blades and aperture ring, and the part they work with. If there f.eks. are oil on the aperture blades, you only need to disassemble those part's, you will then very often begin with going in from the front, it will say take out the front lens group, and then go further into the aperture assembly. sometimes also opening the back of the lens, with the bajonet. Then clean it with Isopropylalcohol 99% ONLY! Next thing is, if the focus system is very stiff, you will probably need to almost fully disassemble the lens (exept the lens's group's and aperture assembly. You will clean the focus system with lighter fluid, and then re-lube with a good "Helicoid" grease, like the #10 helicoid grease, use less as possible. The last thing you can do, is to disassemble the lens group's and clean them with different kind of cleaning solvent's, just like lighter fluid, Isopropylalcohol 99%, Acetone, Hydrogenperoxid 3%, "Eclipse" lens clean fluid. It all depending what's on the lens surface, it will say Fungus, Haze, dust, or other stuff. I will make a video about an "easy" lens, just like the Takumar Bayonet 1:2.8 28mm lens, in all the 3 thing's, just to show what can be done with a "simple" lens. Hope it make's some sense into begin to work with repair lenses. Cheers Kenneth

Hi Mike thank you for the tutorial. I have one problem after cleaning my lens. I cleaned Canon New FD 50mm f1.4. It went smooth except I didn't mark front element and lens barrel in the first place so I frustrating to place front element back to right position to the lens. When focusing ring rotated back and fort. The aperture will stuck. When I put lens mount back, I work on infinity focus. It work well. But when I rotated focusing to minimum focus (0.45), the aperture blade changed to small aperture and get stuck. It can't rotated toward infinity focus. I'm trying to figure out how this nFD lens work. This is my condition. 1. Rear cap mounted : aperture open to the largest. Then I rotated focusing ring to closest then aperture changed to smallest aperture. I'm trying to rotated back to infinity focus but It get stuck. 2. Then I unmounted rear cap and it back to normal again. The issues for me is when rear cap mounted. Focusing ring can't rotate to the right toward infinity focus. When I put lens on the body, the aperture no fully open to largest aperture and can't rotate focusing ring.

Thanks so much for the video, it's detailed and very helpful. I've followed the steps and got a like-new FD 50mm 1.4 lens. However, I was wondering is there anyone face the same problem I encountered. Mike, could you please pay attention to the video started 1:26:36 to the very end. You will find the red dots on the back and on the side, they are not align together. I am asking this for all my other FD lens, these two dots are all align together, see the example I found in the Internet: www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/index3.htm (see photo under the title "Canon's Breech-Lock Mount and What It Does") While the dots are not aligned, the lens simply cannot mount on a FD camera body. BTW, the rear cap cannot mount on the lens as well.

Hi! GREAT videos! Thanks very much for spending time to educate us. I'm finding it IMPOSSIBLE to remove the name ring on the front of my nFD 28mm F2. I bought the rubber tools, and even with all my strength, using clamps there is no movement. I then watched this video and thought perhaps its a ring without threat that pops off: yet again, even with the most precise dental tools, I can't seem to get underneath. Do you have any tips? Also, do you have any idea of a resource which specifies which type of name ring is on each lens?

I have the same lens and used a tiny bit of alcohol on a cotton swab, dabbing at the edges of the ring, to loosen the lock tight they put on at the factory. You typically have to do stuff like that if something will not loosen. Counter clockwise to loosen as well.

Well, I don't know how many different brands in the world who produce lighter fluid, but I think there is no or very little difference between the "Zippo" or the "Extra+" lighter fluid. In some forum on the net they tells that there are difference, depending where in the world they produced, I have only those they produce in EU. You can also use Isopropylalcohol to cleaning the lens elements, but sometimes it works different than lighter fluid.
