In this video I will show how I try to clean the lens element's in my old Canon FD 50mm 1:1.8 (new version), I use lighter fluid to cleaning the lens surface and it look's really good.
There was also a very small area with fungus on the 3. lens group, so I try to clean it some Hydrogen Peroxid 3%, and it work's perfect.
But when I assemble the back lens group's I made a mistake because I put the 3. lens group in the wroooong way, well, I figure it out, and everything was correct again without any damage.

Hi Everybody, "The405" mention a note about putting the mount on the wrong way, and not everything was alined correct. So now I have made a new video where I go into details with the problems when someone try to put in the mount. I have add small marks on those parts that has to sit correct, before you can put on the mount, you can find it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hryFjcqLq6ezdYk.html

Thanks so much Kenneth! This is so helpful and you are an incredibly thorough and patient person. Interesting how different Canon lenses are inside. And I currently have at least one wide angle lens that won't focus correctly and I'm trying to figure out which element I put in the wrong way lol ;)

The best tutorial on KZfaq about vintage lens cleaning! I wonder if you have RMC Tokina 28mm f/2.8 FD mout to do the same thing, because mine has problem with the aperture and something is rattling inside and I guess is a spring, but I don't know how to get to the aperture assembly from the back (my nightmare with FD mount)... I've got the same problem with the 100mm f2.8 new FD as well..

After watching this I rewatched your video on cleaning the breech lock Canon 50mm f1.4 - that lens had NO plastic. Of course plastic is lighter, but I have to imagine it starts to get brittle and things break when you take the lens apart sometimes...

Just for everyone knowledge, the plastic ring in the front (where the name of the lens is printed) is not always clipped in, in the case of the 24mm is screwed. So check that before trying to lift it.

I will add that also on the 85mm looks like it is screwed in, but I still need to fing a way to unscrew it :(

Thanks for the video. I’m attempting to swap the front element of a broken lens into the body of another lens. Do you think there is a difference in glass size between the two version of this lens? The old bayonet mount 50 f1.4 and the FD N breach mount 50 1.4? Or do you think the front element is interchangeable. Thanks for your feedback!

Hi mikeno62, I love your informational videos, and would love to see side by side before and after images of the lenses. Maybe you could also take some photos to show what negative effects the dirt/fungus causes. Can you do a bayonet mount Canon FD 1.8 85mm? I almost have the guts to try this myself! And seriously, thank you very much. These videos are a treat! LG

Great idea, I have also think of making some videos about the differenceness, before cleaning some lenses with Fungus or Haze and then show how big difference there are in contrast and sharpness. Cheers Kenneth

For all those working on this lens: (@53:05) This is the wrong position for the inner mount ring. Both red dots have to line up before you put in the outer silver part of the mount.

hallo, I disassembled my just arrived FD 24mm 2.8 to clean the lenses, the front part went smooth but I can't put back the back mechanism anymore, I mean I can't make it work anymore. It is a little different but not much, I didn't took all apart, I just needed to clean the lenses not the aperture of the focus so it is all mounted, I just need to put it back togheter. Looks like I'm doing what you did but the aperture does not work properly, it goes from full open to half open if I pull the lever but the ring does not do anything. Any clue or question or anything that could help?

Do you recommend lighter fluid as a general purpose cleaner for vintage lenses?
@mikeno62
@mikeno62 4 жыл бұрын
Well, it all depending what kind of dirt or oil film or other stuff is on the lens surface, lighter fluid is most of the time a really good lens surface cleaner, but not an "universal" cleaning solvent for lens cleaning. Sometimes I also use Isopropylalcohol 99% or Acetone or just normal dishwasher soap, sometimes I use Xylen or Contact cleaner. And when I want to remove Fungus or Haze I use Hydrogen Peroixde 3%. Vinegar is also in some cases a good thing when there is Fungus or Haze.
@Demas242
@Demas242 4 жыл бұрын
@@mikeno62 oh ok thanks, it depends on what's on the lens. Give me your thoughts on what I did below; 1) Lighter Fluid - Dust cleaner 2) 99% Isopropylalchohol - Dust cleaner 3) Acetone - Dust cleaner 4) Dishwasher soap - Dust cleaner 5) Xylen/Contact cleaner - Dust cleaner 6) 3% Hydrogen Peroxide - Haze/fungus cleaner 7) Vinegar - Haze/fungus cleaner I'm sure there's more than just dust/haze/and fungus that can end up on a lens, so I just wanted to create something, as a general rule of thumb. I am trying to put together a service kit for some vintage lenses I ordered. Some have haze, fungus, and dust--maybe more, but I won't know until I receive the lenses.

Hi! Have one question no matter how much I try I cannot the remove the element as shown in (@11:51) it seems to be stuck in there, any tips on how to remove it? Also my lens seems to not have the plastic stopper used to hold said element in place. Thanks!
@mikeno62
@mikeno62 Жыл бұрын
If a screw or lens group is way to tight, I most of the time use Isopropylalcohol 99% on a cotton bud to add the fluid on the screw head (maybe it's 2-3 drops or so), to soften the thread lock, sometimes you really have to use A LOT, and specially on the lens group thread or a retaining ring / front ring. Someetimes I also use nail polish remover with Acetone, or just pure Acetone ( take good care when it's close to plastic, it can soften the plastic ). Solvents just like lighter fluid or CRC does not work very well. Hope it can help you

I used a 3mm rubber cone. I placed it over the element and it made it easier to pull the element out (rubber gave better friction to my hand).
