My mom bought one for my dad for their anniversary in 77. He ditched it in the woods while running from the cops and when he came back it was gone. My mom passed away in 2019 but she gave him hell for it up until she passed. He used it for hill climbing. He said he loved it. A lot of people lost money betting against him. People would talk down on the pull start and it being automatic..he's really kicking himself now.

I remember watching one of those race on an indoor track in Memphis, TN. I believe it was before 1974. Previously to the Rokon and their factory rider showing up, there was a Kawasaki rider, Doug Walls, that dominated every open class race. He was almost lapped by the Automatic Rokon. Classic piece of motorcycle history.

I remember when one of the open class experts showed up with one of these for a race in Middleboro, MA. I do not remember how the rider finished but I remember the start where the Rokon near humiliated the other bikes off the line with the efficient drive system and controlled rear wheel spin.

Allow me to give you a little more history. I bought a BMW from Pete’s BMW in Marlborough New Hampshire back in the 70s. He was one of the people who created the first prototype of these bikes. They took a Yamaha 360 frame and stuffed the motor in it. He left the company and had some type of falling out with them and that prototype frame became a planter buried next to his shop. If I recall correctly the plant was in Keene at that time.

Hey folks, this is Carl, your NEMM Roaming Diplomat. We have 2 similar Rokons on the 3rd floor, both with Sachs engines. One is a short track machine, the other is a street legal scrambler. Both are impressive, but this one just knocks the socks off em'! With just 70 made, you probably never see another. This is truly a collectors dream!!

The Rokon RT-340 was an enduro motorcycle that had two interesting features - instead of a kick start, a rope was used, similar to the technique used to start a lawnmower. Various starting techniques were developed, one of the more popular being to stand on the left side of the bike, left-hand reaching across to the right end of the handlebar, keeping the throttle closed and the front brake on, right hand grabbing the T-handle on the end of the rope, and then pulling hard. The second feature was an automatic transmission - the first fitted to a motorcycle. All the rider had to do was twist the throttle and go - no changing of gears and no slipping of the clutch. The engine of the RT-340 was a Sachs 334cc two-stroke, which was originally built for snowmobiles. The engine put out 30bhp to the rear wheel, and would rev comfortably at 6,000-7,000 rpm. Disc brakes were used on both wheels due to the lack of engine braking. The RT-340 sold for $1,645, and a team was entered in the 1973 International Six Days Trial, held near Dalton in Massachussetts, in the 350cc class. Gary Snider finished 13th, Jim Fogle 15th, Ron LaMastus 17th and Jim Simmons 18th. More success came in the 1975 ISDT, but the company was bankrupt and out of business by 1978. The company went back into business in 1981 under new ownership, but the RT-340 was not returned to production.

Didnt they get the engines from Sachs in Germany or something? I think they tried automatic dual range on the old KTMs, but they worked out on models like the WR that a well spaced 6 speed manual box was quicker. Was it Aermacchi that had an MX model that had a rear disc brake , but no front one lol.. I think the same model that had the 2 forks on the back instead of conventional shocks..
