World First Speedrun: Sunlust Map 30 UV Fast - Doom Strategy Guide

A break-down of the strategies used to beat the challenge that was once deemed impossible: Sunlust Map 30 with fast monsters. The zero-press, the arch-vile jumps, the horseshoe maneuver, and the butterfly maneuver made me realize it was possible with saves. Then, it was just a matter of surviving the ordeal single-segment. I took me one month of practice, and 94 attempts. I expected worse.
This was my hardest doom speedrun so far. It took me a lot of study and experimentation to pick the strategies to survive the challenge. Hopefully this tutorial analysis video will help you, if you're interested in trying the challenge yourself. I believe any doom player of medium+ skill level can pull this off, but be aware that it might require some practice. My time is totally beatable, so good luck!
Thanks to the patrons and friends who reviewed this video in early access and helped improve it.
Thanks to 4shockblast, Daerik, and SKYWARDS: I learned a lot from studying your speedruns.
Thanks to decino for helping me brainstorm a few ideas that ended up being in the video.

######## Why no stream? ########
I did not stream this speedrun for several reasons. I've been feeling burned out from streaming and editing videos for the last few months, together with some personal issues. The idea of setting up every tool I usually need to stream felt overwhelming. I just wanted to sit down and play some doom alone. Also, I did not want to be stream-sniped by showing everyone the strategies I put together here. Last but not least, I did the practice & attempts for this run in the morning, which is definitely when I'm at the peak of my performance, but it's a horrible time to stream because most of my audience is asleep. I hope you understand. I want to get back to streaming eventually; but please give me some time. Life's been rough.

32:17 Actual Danmaku (Bullet Hell) games strat right here where one hit means death. Similarly, you hug the projectiles as close as you can (which is called "grazing") while slowly advancing and quickly drawing "wings" to get away. Of course Danmaku bosses release projectiles in a pattern which forces you to get creative and think fast, but noname mobs like shooting straight at you just like Barons, so this maneuver works wonders a lot of the time.

I don't think it can be stressed enough how much your breakdowns are awesome. Getting this titanic achievement is a feat unto itself, but the thorough way you explain what you do to what end and with what resources is not only instructive, but a lot of fun. And not every content creator has the gift of explaining things in a way that makes the audience themselves feel big brained. You, Coin, got both skills in one package. _Excellent._ Congratulations again on the achievement, and thank you so much for the dedication and time you give to us. 🤗

I am incredibly late to the party, but just finally got around to watching this, and holy hell man... Massive GG! You managed to not only perform possibly one of the most monumental -fast runs of the year, but also managed to turn the demo into an informational analysis video describing a myriad of facets of Classic Doom speedrunning in a digestible and entertaining way. This video was a real treat, so thank you for putting in all the extra effort to illustrate what you were talking about as well as showing the third-person angles. Once again, massive props. This is one of my favorite Doom videos of all time.

Amazing achievement! I wanted to give a shout-out as well to the way you broke down the fights and was able to pause and give reasons as to why you were doing something. Step 5: Go back and edit the comment with two observations: 5a) Holy shit this was super entertaining! Good job for making it and I'm now going to watch the uncut run 5b) The butterfly maneuver is something from actual bullet hell strategy. If you invented it yourself, in the context of a totally different game, that's the work of a genius right there!

What an amazing achievement, congratulations! This was extremely fun and interesting to watch and even though I know this was the successful run, getting stuck behind that single revenant at 22:27 and dropping to 4% near the end really put me on the edge of my seat. Thanks to the great analysis I'm sure there's some stuff in here that I'll be able to use when I eventually try to clear this map as well, even though I'm not crazy enough to do it with fast monsters. 😋 Incredibly well played!

@@coincidentGot around to watching it, fantastic editing. Making the map's MIDI play continuously throughout the video is a nice touch. The butterfly manoeuvre is indispensable on fights like these, especially in something like NoSp or Dimensions where you're fighting cybers instead of barons. But I don't think I've seen a video that explains the pattern, especially so completely and in such an intuitive fashion

This map man, one of the all time greatest and fully deserving of its notoriety…. terrifying architecture, earsplitting fights, topped off with a midi that inspires hopelessness and despair… A saveless run of this map in itself is no easy feat, but add in fast monsters AND a speedrun… MATE, absolute scenes! I loved every minute of this run, amazing combination of willpower, technique, execution. You’re really up there with the best. Congratulations on this exceptional achievement.

Well, I must say this run is totally mind-blowing with all the techniques you've used! It's like a showcase of cool magic tricks. Coin: "sr40 against the wall, this is an easy trick" Me: *rewinds 5 times* "WAIT how did you do that" 4:46 Daaaamn, I was almost sure that's a dead run and that you were going to restart. Absolutely butt-clenching moment! 5:30 Those usages of archie's jumps to skip entire sections never cease to amaze me 18:04 - Holy crap, I recall how many tries it usually takes to complete this even in normal UV. Crazy to realize that you've nailed it with -fast, in a single run, wow! The butterfly tactic with barons is so cool. Just to think that it's been so many years and people are still finding new tactics to survive in seemingly hopeless situations! P.S. Your narrative is so satisfying - I also totally love it that you kept your original voice recording from the run, with all the emotions and

@billabobyt
@billabobyt Жыл бұрын
The SR40 jump trick is simple - usually if you run into a wall it cancels your momentum, but if you run into a thing, such as a decoration or an enemy, the game doesn't cancel your momentum. So if the platform you're on is too small to gain full speed just by running along it, you can grind against a thing to build up speed for a little while.

The most insane, heartstopping achievement I have EVER seen for a video game. Completely impossible to overstate how absurd this is - completing one of the hardest maps in one of the hardest megaWADs, a map that made even great players like Decino lose their cool, with fast monsters enabled, under a time limit, in one segment... Absolutely batshit. I don't know how your heart didn't explode. Congratulations!

Watching this vid while extremly high and sleep depraved really grounds you into the hellish journey that is this achievement. Amazing skills and editing.

Very good video. Not just a monster of a run on a monster of a map, but also a very thorough explanation of the various segments of the map and the techniques employed. Damn solid work all around on this one. 👏👏👏
Missed? It's all Doom's fault. The blockmap bug explained.
