I'm an other hungarian and I've noticed that even though in the past we used to be more upset when people called us eastern europeans, by now we have internalized the term to some extent. This is not to say that hungarians are turning away from the west, rather it seems to me to be a sense of pessimism about the state of our country I guess we did have that before anyways, and as such I doubt it's this simple however the change is real. We used to attach our egos to the idea of central europeanness as if that somehow made us more westernized and thus superior, however nowadays we just shrug that yeah we're the biggest shithole in the EU alongside romania and bulgaria rather than being side by side with countries like slovakia and poland, let alone czechia and especially austria or germany. I only see hungary referred to as central european by hungarians in more official, professional contexts because our understanding is that even though we feel like an eastern european country (I'd say for better or for worse but it's only for the worse really) we still consider our geographic position to be in central europe TLDR: calling hungary eastern european is fine but that's more so in the cultural context, us being central european is mostly just a geographic thing P.S: Other hungarians or foreigners who have researched the topic may feel free to correct me if I got anything wrong
