You helped me immensely through my grieving process, which is ongoing. You should know that. Thank you so much. I lost my boy to lymphoma 4 months ago. In 6 short weeks after diagnosis he was gone. The hardest thing I've ever had to go through. One day I hope I could have the opportunity to get a dog from Steve, but im def not ready yet. Keep doing what you are doing. You are helping more people than you even know.

The point about a dog with bite training being less likely to bite is actually similar to people once they’re armed. You can be a relatively confrontational and combative person, they day you acquire a concealed carry permit and start carrying a firearm you immediately notice yourself avoiding trouble more than you previously would’ve

Hi, another great podcast, I own a Czech working black german shepperd, he loves biting on the sleeve in IGP or on a mondioring jacket, but he is a darling who comes to pet himself (he loves girls :)), and at this moment no one would ever say that he might ever bite :)

I used to walk and take care of a giant schnauzer. He was wonderful. A big love, but could scare the crap out of someone! He had the oddest run. He kind of walked very quickly...lol. Has treed his share of squirrels, as well. His family also had a mini and a standard schnauzer. All different personalities.

Enjoyed the show thank you guys. Never train a mean dog to bite is the very first thing I was taught when I got into the dog business. Now they’re taking the clatter sticks out of ipo, it’s truly sad how these positive only people are ruining the working dogs. I think you have a better chance of making a psa and wda dog a protection over the ipo dog due to the fact the ipo dog is equipment fixated because it only bites a sleeve and is taught to pull.

This conversation is fascinating, very thought provoking and I'd love to ask a question. I read and watch a bunch of different trainers that have expertise in aggression -- none of them experts on police and protection dogs as Steve is. But one of the threads that sometimes comes up is that police working K9s may not be trained with a reliable enough "out" which can sometimes lead to tragedy. Listening to Steve right now, I was wondering what he might say about that?

What percentage of sport dogs, great dogs on the field, can actually be useful in confrontational situations in civil circumstances? Difficult to generalize but helpful if one or both of you would comment... Mr. Stoops you mention Armin Winkler. For those who do not know this name, he translated Der Schutzhund by Helmut Raiser. Top guy...

I used 2 balls to train nova... dropping the first was natural when turning to go for the next ... and i just used repetitive throws ... not extremely far ... it was weird when suggested to me but 20min and the drop became smooth enough she didnt even realize when i wasnt throwing until after the one she had was already dropped and shortly after put in my hand

GSD’s the most intelligent guardian dog. American Akita’s and Cane Corso’s show stoppers. A GSD will run you down and bite you taking you to the ground. A Corso will snap at you randomly causing great damage. And an American Akita is a straight show stopper. Akita’s will lure you in with their calm demeanor. As soon as you’re close enough. They will kill without much effort. They’re incredibly big, strong dogs that truly know how to kill. Only speaking on dogs I’ve owned or have experience with.

I dony think any dog tools should be outlawed. But i do believe some shouldn't be sold at PetSmart. We have had many fly by night "protection" trainers who offer bite work to any pet owner with no evaluation etc. And then we end up with a lot of dogs that had iffy minded dogs that never had control work but a lot of unstructured bite inhibition. Fact of life, people who lack knowledge paired with others lacking knowledge ruins life for everyone. The dog world is on a very rocky ledge. Love you guys. Your skills, knowledge and ethics. Keep up the battle.

The word on Akitas are that they are too independent to be trained as protection dogs and that they will become too agressive. As a owner I know they are terrific natural protection dogs. I am on my second male now and wondering what you and other people here commenting think about potentially do protection work with my guy now. Obviously I would have to have his temper tested first. If those tests even apply well on Akitas. For the record its an American Akita. And not one of the "new" ones people have in dog parks and that love all people. He is old school.

My protection trained wolfdog has never had an accidental bite. He has inflicted a bit of damage during training and one real life incident against dogs. Training wise it was mostly because his jaw was so strong. The other because the other dogs literally tried to kill him. Training wise hes broken an arm through a sleeve. Hes also caused some hard hard falls and some other little bumps and scraps. But hes otherwise an uber gentle baby. Veey social. And doesnt ramp up to aggression too fast. Will try and turn things into play or correct the other dog into better behavior. People wise he doesnt really latched down full power clamp unless you really push the issue or given a command.

I live in the uk, I have a working GSD, I use a prong and e collar. No one has ever questioned me or my approach. All I get are compliments. I’ve been asked a few times if I’m training a police dog. Nope the uk cops don’t train them like this 😇

There are numerous even YT videos giving this info even where the handlers are sent for their 8-12 week train course for how to handle and use these dogs.

My question is about what is a "good citizen" dog? My dog all the drives, we do amateur bite work to teach him that control, we need a contol mechanism on that behavior. He's 1 year, 1 month. He has improved dramatically in one year. Is see a possibility of citizenship, but I also see a psycho. But what makes him a good citizen? He has improved his emotional control in public, but he does have reacitvity problems. He is bad, he is, but he's a puppy and Im seeing continuous improvement from training. I've been bitten, during reactive moments, but that behavior has imroved dramatically. We had a dog reactivity event yesterday, but I did not get bitten while I corrected and redirected. Clear improvement. However if I have a guest over, I have to lock this dog up because be will bite them. He will. Like if you walk in, and I havent integrated you with him properly, he will attack you. Is this a bad citizen? Yes? or is it just a puppy in training? We train all the time.

Robert, I hope you actually do read this comment. I actually respect you and watch a lot of your videos and even suggest them to some of my clients. I understand your angst against positive trainers, but it really is not them you should be cutting up all the time. The problem is with OWNERS. To explain, I give a client instructions on a technique to practice with their dog. I demonstrate it multiple times and have the owner practice it in front of me so they understand. BUT during the following weeks they alter it and do it their own way, incorrectly. The technique could now be considered abusive because of the OWNERS MISTAKE not the trainers. Any tool or technique can be useful when used correctly, but when used INCORRECTLY it becomes harmful. It isnt positive trainers making this mistake. It is owners making this mistake and they are the ones you should be cutting up, most of these people shouldnt be allowed to "own" a dog. I see just as many dog trainers that train with prong collars and e-collars INCORRECTLY and they are more at fault than positive trainers for getting these devices banned! Take for instance when I tell a client to tap his dog on the shoulder, literally a one finger tap, but the owner instead hits his dog, who is at fault? The trainer? NO its the owner for not following instructions and being abusive. Or take the person I recently acquired who has a 17 pound 6 month old puppy (with no prior training) who had a previous "traditional" trainer tell them they can never teach a dog to walk nicely without pops on the leash with a choke collar. But then the owners arent popping this puppy, they are literally dragging it choking as they walk. I was mortified when I saw what they were doing. And in ONE session I had that puppy walking nicely in a HARNESS. Its when people see things like that that the choke collar is villainized. But it wasnt a positive trainer, it wasnt even the traditional trainer, it was the owner and their incorrect usage of the tool (or technique) that is the problem. Or the person who has the dog who doesnt understand polite greetings and every time the dog shows an interest in someone the owners zaps him so hard with the e-collar that the dog is whining and flopping on the ground. It isnt a positive trainer who is causing that scene. Its a moron owner. When my husband saw that he flipped and expressed disgust at e-collars and I corrected him, its not the e-collar its the moron owner. So you want to constantly make innuendos about tools being banned keep in mind it is NOT the positive trainers that are causing it, its moron OWNERS (or bad trainers) that are causing it. And I would bet that the majority of the "trainers" that are making these "tools" look harmful are not positive trainers. So you want to complain about e-collars being banned. I get it. I really do. As I do understand their usage and place in training, but IT IS NOT POSITIVE TRAINERS CAUSING THE ISSUE!

Hold on, if in a real situation the dog is having fun, but yet after it’s bite you can’t pet the dog or take it to tasty freeze, then the dog actually was in a serious defensive state of mind. Especially if your comparing it to a bar fight.

I disagree to whoever is saying about not having a protection dog. What could happen to people with disabilities that need a pair of eyes or ears and are in danger? These are the stupidiest things that put people's lives whose dogs are protecting them even from themselves in so much jeopardy. The world is becoming so dumbed in terms of the potential some of these tools can turn a dog to. Dogs potentiality is not exploited because of these dumb movements made by inexperts in the field of animal behavior. I'd seeing myself how dogs with behavior problems have a 180⁰ change for positive, and then been weaned out of these devices and worked totally amazingly great, also the ones who for life still have to used them but work awesome, as sharp as a pencil! 🕊️ Gotta pray a lot for these people with such misinformation and determination. Are people against these tools just wanting to see more animals been killed? A nontrained dog means a threat to people and their breed 🙏🏻. I agree with @RobertCabral and Mr. Stoops, 100%. Dogs can't be wimpy, we really need dogs.

It's not reckless if with the right person. Dog ownership here isn't vetted in any manner, which leads to idiots having dogs that teach dogs to bite, typically criminals and gangs, not the average person. much the same as the average person who won't abuse a dog, regardless of the tools used, horse riders are the exact same(crops, spurs, even reins and legs can be used to abuse) & with relationships too, you're either an abuser or you're not! Taking sports away from dogs is just nuts, dogs need an outlet and they often don't get it in the park or with a pet owner, which is a larger problem with pet bites along with the whole notion that you can't correct your children and now dogs because its mean, you can't learn without corrections, someone has to tell you its wrong or you'll just keep doing it, which only leads to a full grown person or dog who have no social skills and think they can do as they please when they please and have little to no consequences. the badly behaved person goes to jail, and a dog gets killed. A big part of the problem is they keep putting laws in place that do not even allow you to protect yourself, jeez in the UK you can be sued and arrested for attacking a burglar in your own damn home! and If I have a police dog then it's chasing bad guys who will do anything to get away including hitting the dog, so for detainment purposes the dog needs to hold on regardless until told otherwise. none of the dog bites in the UK or the deaths (9 in 2022) was by dogs that were protection trained either!! My pup is mouthy, and he could really do with some protection training to get some control, equipment or not wouldn't fuss him either, I don't want to do it myself though and I can't find a trainer to work with. It's all ballocks & without evidence or stats to back it up.

I have a man stopper. Rhodesian ridgeback Belgian malinois mix. She is nuts, ripped one of her front paw pads off almost completely, on a chain link fence, and didn't even whimper. She just turned one year in September, i do hope she gets a lil bigger tho
