This is the world's biggest whistle test video. It took several months of planning to get all these whistles and special permission to be in Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg, Sweden.
While the loudest whistle doesn't necessarily mean the best, it's an important factor depending on the intended use. Practicality and sound consistency are also important to consider. In this video, I blew the whistles with full force to ensure fairness and I created a race chart to show how they compare in sound level.
Most whistle companies do not specify the distance or measurment type when stating the decibel levels of their whistles, resulting in a lack of standardized measurement practices. Some companies use A-weighting while others use C-weighting. I chose to measure the decibel levels from a distance of 0.5 meters with C-weighting. This decision was made considering that some companies measure from closer distances, while others choose 1-2 meters. C-weighting is particularly useful for measuring short bursts of sounds, such as whistle sounds.

I remember that a few years ago their Electronic Whistle was rated at 120 dB, and recently they have corrected it - now they claim 'only' 100 dB or so.

I have to say compared to the last whistle comparison, a leap from 16 to 60 whistles is astounding! With so many choices available, it's safe to say this is truly the biggest whistle comparison yet. Very interesting to see that most Molten whistles are on the higher end of the dB scale. I might have to look into a new secondary whistle option! (Main being the Valkeen of course :D) One thing I'd like to know is if you have done whistle signals from different positions (further away, while running, etc.) this time as well, and if so, can we expect another video with them included? Anyway, great video and thank you again! Happy new year and good luck with the upcoming season/matches!

Thank you. Yes. I have done all whistle signal variations and also a 50 meter test for every whistle in this video. A lot more videos are coming. I didn’t add those in this one because I wanted the video to be under 5 minutes.

The slimline tornado 636 is my go to. Its my edc whistle, vehicle emergency whistle, sports refereeing whistle, because its just so light and small yet packs a punch! And easy to blow

Can you remember original Fox 40 Sonik, produced before ca. 2007? It was advertised as '4-chamber, Multi-directional Whistle' with exactly 125 dB sound power - the loudest in Fox 40 history. Later they re-designed it into Sonik Blast, which has 'only' 120 claimed. I strongly wonder how it sounded like. It's very rare today and hard to find.

T2000. It’s a bit louder than the Classic and has a unique tone.

They have different sounds so it depends on what you like. HRS is clearly louder but Fox 40 Classic has a different sound that you can hear in NBA, Premier League and more.

There is no secret way of using any whistle. Just tilt the Valkeen up a little if you want a little darker tone.

I am not an indoors referee but I would say Molten Blazza, Fox 40 Classic and Fox 40 Pearl.

The Dholpin Pro whistle that I use is bigger than the Molten Valken😂

Dolfin Pro is noticeably smaller than the Valkeen.

There is a difference between what we hear and what the dBmeter gives as numbers. Depending on the use, the frequencies are not the same, and for a less powerful whistle on the theory of numbers, it will be heard from further away with a frequency intended to be so. If we do the ranking by closing our eyes, it will not be at all representative of the figures, that's for sure !

The dB meter is professional also measured the frequencies for every whistle. The dB meter takes those things into consideration. It costs $6000. But yes, frequency does matter in the sense on how well it’s perceived in reality. But that doesn’t mean it’s actually louder or not. Only how humans perceive it. Because the sound graphs showed that the higher the dB, the higher the sound level graphs were on the phones recording when I edited the video. Basically every whistle on top on this list follows the claimed lists from other tests.

Which two would you recommend for outdoor use on the water. I kayak and was looking at the slim tornado, fox 40, fox sonic.

I haven’t used whistles under water but both are pealess and would work. But if you mean above water, as you saw on the video, Sonik Blast is much louder than the Slimline Tornado. So for safety use you should choose that.

Out of those two, Sonik Blast. Slimline Tornado will sound bad if you use too much force.

I have a few questions about the whistles in this video. 1. I thought the Dolfin Pro was for volleyball but you claimed as outdoor sports. Is it because it is one of the loudest whistles? 2. What is HRS? Is it ripoff of Valkeen or some other brand that became same design as Valkeen? 3. Can I use Valkeen in any sports?(Outdoor, Indoor, Futsal, etc) because I'm too lazy to having a other whistles for indoors. Lastly I am glad that you are still here to make a whistle comparison. 1: I see that they claim it’s tuned for volleyball but it’s very similar to the Valkeen and suitable for outdoors. It’s way too loud for indoors. 2: Yes, a complete copy but it’s a brand called HRS. 3: You can use it indoors but I don’t recommend it. It’s too loud and it will be uncomfortable for you and everyone in there. For indoors I recommend darker tones and/or less than 125 dB. Valkeen doesn’t sound good if you use less force to make it quiet. You can use the Vorca or Blazza for that.

I use valkeen in futsal too, and I know many top refs, including fifas who use it too. A Whistle can never be too loud

@jambow8469 Disagree. A whistle can be too loud. If people are uncomfortable by it then it’s too loud. From experience the Valkeen is too much for indoors. But it’s my recommendation.

@@RefereeChannel Well I guess a Whistle can be too loud, but I just have not found one that loud yet in my opinion. The louder the Whistle the better the decisions look. Even Classic fox sounds too whiny to me, not convincing at all. Also speaking as a high-level player; when the Whistle hurts their ears they do not want to start arguing. It gives you more power. But there is a reason Why almost all futsal referees carry 2 Whistles compared to usually just one in football.

Én annak idején a Fox40 Mini-re esküdtem játékvezetőként! Fogásra is, hangra is és akusztikailag is sokkal jobb volt, mint a Fox40 Classic! (A Fox40 Pearl pedig jó vicc volt, ahogy anno egyes kollégák fújkálták pedig kifejezetten komikus volt.) As I say in the description, loudest doesn’t have to mean it’s the best. T2000 is a great whistle and I use it because it has a unique sound.

I am very surprised by your measurement of Fox 40 Pearl - they claim only 90 dB, and your result is 120,5 dB so much much louder than claimed. And to be honest, I trust your result more, because the specific low 'BOOM' sound made by Pearl still sounds extremely loud to my ear.

It’s not only proved by the dB value here. Even my phone sound graphs show that it’s equal to the Fox 40 Classic. Same with the Titan. They claim 90 but it’s much louder.

@@RefereeChannel And the same for Mini - they claim 'only' 109 dB while it can be even louder than Classic here! I think that all measurements claimed by Fox 40 are too low. For comparison, Acme claims 119 dB for Cyclone 888 - nearly equals to 119,3 measured.

Yes. They should make new tests for their whistles and also state from what distance they were tested.
