You raise a great question, just how much torque can a 1/2" anvil take before failing?
@TorqueTestChannel
@TorqueTestChannel 2 жыл бұрын
It's not a simple question. It's like asking: how deep can any 12oz hammer drive a certain spike into the ground? Depends on how hard you hit it, or how it's being hit so that it doesn't break.

A good 3/4” impact with regularly break a 1/2” adaptor if it gets a solid hit where the nut/bolt doesn’t move. I’d think something like the Thor impact is getting close to what a 1/2” anvil can consistently take without breaking.
@sdriza
@sdriza Жыл бұрын
@@NBSV1 You're exactly right. Years back I bought a heavy duty 3/4 impact (forgot brand? how the hell...anyway) and regularly used it as a 1/2 with an adapter - learned fast to get a good adapter. I was really surprised as I didnt think that would happen... it's basically, "what is the max torque for 1/2 drives before you NEED 3/4?" anecdotally, ut looks like 1/2 torque wrenches go to about ~250 where I see 3/4 up 650? (then where does 1 inch take over? bridge construction?)

Funny how manufacturers play with numbers. I’d bet they tested it with the hose straight into the inlet with no quick connect and used a different bolt size. That way they could fudge the numbers. Nice job testing it to show its real world performance. 😎 👍
@NBSV1
@NBSV1 2 жыл бұрын
Usually what the manufactures do is claim what it puts out when the torque spikes from the impact hitting. They claim that as the nut busting torque because in theory it’s hitting it with that much torque for an instant. But, that isn’t really useful for much more than just rattling things. They way they measure torque here is much better. It also puts everything on an even field so if something makes more or less torque it shows up.

You got some cool videos! Love to see 3/4 air impact videos. How some air tool companies come up with crazy torque numbers. They take a specific size bolt or nut then oil or grease it they tighten it to say 1700ftlbs then loosen it then they say the tool makes 1700ftlbs nut busting torque. Not real world torque numbers . When buying air tools I always look at the working torque range.

I'm no so surprised that air impact brands that aren't IR, Aircat, Astro, or tool truck brands are usually near the bottom. Feel fairly good about having an IR 2235TiMax, being purchased before this channel existed. I have an Astro 1828 3/8" gun, I don't know that it's actually internally different from an 1822, but it seems quite strong for a 3/8". I do have one of the old red earthquakes that looks like the "DP" gun and I doubt it's that weak - seems maybe slightly more powerful than my Astro 1828, I use it a lot for removing lug nuts and it doesn't seem to do anything but buzz them right off...

Thing is, TTC isn’t disproving manufacturer claims, and said that in the intros of older videos. They’re just running all the impacts they test on the same dyno, under the same conditions, so that they can be more accurately compared. Whereas manufacturers don’t run the same conditions as each other, and are generally designed to boast a large number that while not likely in the hands of many users, is still technically not false. Bolt size, thread type and pitch, lube vs dry, what materials the dyno use, and in the case of air tools - how air is delivered to the tools, changes the torque numbers.

350 thousand subscribers let's go I say this and every comment I put on here as I absolutely love the channel. I'll confess to buying a Chinese knockoff and a link that I left which I never got an answer to but that's okay I guess they're busy

I'd like to see a test of the Flexzilla impact gun. I have one that I'd be willing to send in for testing purposes.

I think you should try tightening the bolt to the stated claim, and then try breaking it loose, and see if guns make their claim. AvE did a vijeyo on something like that, on torque-structo-matic, and it makes a difference on static forces... Worth some investigation on impacts?

These companies need to be more honest with their ratings. I don't believe Ive ever seen any impact go over 1000 on your channel. Which means every company lies and we shouldnt pretend like thats okay. I'd be much happier if it said its rated to 700 on the box and it ends up making 725.
