Its popular because its "circular". The home chord the Root, provides a basic starting point. Then the 5th, or dominant, provides the most natural jumping point. The minor 6th, also the natural minor of the same key, provide natural tension from the major and dominant chords. Then the major 4th, from the 6th provides the tonal direction which sends us back to home. Its the most basic cookie cutter progression that our ears just love the most.

Once you listen for this progression you realize it's so common that to make a list of songs that use it seems silly. It's like making a list of all the songs that feature a female singer and acoustic guitar. The chord progression is popular for a reason, and even if we don't like the idea of something being common and over-used, this is one of those times that if it sounds good it is good. The trick for it to be great or at least good, however, is to use it well or cleverly, as music is more than just the chord progression.

This of course doesn’t mean they didn’t do one. But at the same time these are big enough bands to suggest they’d be prominent examples if they had.

This progression is actually used in this order in Japanese pop music. It's mostly 4-6-1-5 or 6-1-5-4. That way it becomes easy to switch between 4-5-3-6, 6-4-5-1 and 4-3-6-1.
