Cool story because I'm originally from Burlington. Yeah, Syd Bolton died last year. In fact, I'm kind of surprised they never talked about it on the podcast considering he is the biggest collector in all of Canada and had the biggest collection in the country if I recall. His family is now trying to sell off the massive collection which is something like 17,000 games and hundreds of different consoles and pc's. A fucking gigantic collection. Rerez has a video on it. You guys should talk about this considering how big of a collector he was and the fact of trying to sell such a massive collection.

Super late comment, but this game excites me. I like the Atari 2600 a lot, and those "made-in-a-basement" rarities are fascinating! So interesting to think there was a time in video game history where just about anyone with the requisite coding knowledge could develop and market a game for the most popular/mainstream console. If I had that kind of money to drop on luxury purchases, I would've bought this in a heartbeat.

So it's like Atari was experiencing homebrew before homebrew was really a thing?
@SeekerLancer4 жыл бұрын
Homebrew was always a thing. Hackers gunna hack. It was easier for the home computer market (obviously, because cassettes and floppy disks) but if you had a way to manufacture a ROM cartridge there was nothing stopping you from putting your game on Atari 2600. The NES had its 10NES lockout chip but people still managed to get around that, and there was no such lockout for the original Famicom so there's lots and lots of crazy stuff on it.

I wonder what went into rolling your own cartridges from your home back then. I imagine you would write it with some computer, dunno what they woulda used in late 70s to early 80s. Then burn the ROM, protype a board then they'd probably etch and solder the boards by hand. These days you could just send off to JLCPCB to have a stack of 100 boards cheaper than it cost to make a single cartridge back then.

Getting a complete Atari 2600 set is like trying to get a complete Commodore 64 set. It's like a computer. Since any random jerk could make a game for the Atari how could you possibly have a complete list? For all we know some guy made ten copies of a homebrew game in 1983 and sold them at the flew market. Does that count? At least with post-NES systems there is a list of officially licensed titles. You do get some unofficial games too but the list is a lot easier to work with and you could have a complete licensed collection. What is an official release on the Atari other than the actually games Atari made? A good collector would probably have to pick a list of third parties they want to collect for like Activision or Imagic and go from there.

To me this is tantamount to being a "Hombrew" Unless it is an officially licensed game, OR a game that was made by an actual company, (Tegen) games for the NES while never officially licensed, were made by a known company and mass produced. A person can make a game in their basement and slap it on a computer chip and put it on an NES cartridge shell, it does not make it the most RARE NES game on Earth. This ATARI 2600 game, is basically a homebrew game and in my opinion is worthless. That having been said, if I were to stumble across one I would try to sell it on Ebay too, and anyone who offered me 10k would be the new proud owner of some Atari 2600 "homebrew" game and I would be laughing all the way to the bank.
@tbirum5 жыл бұрын
You bring up a fair point about ATARI not having a official seal of quality like Nintendo, but that is part of the problem when it comes to collecting for Atari, just about anyone could (if they knew about electronics and computer programing) could make Atari games, IF I were to make an Atari game and make 20 copies and sell them in a add in the back of a Hustler magazine and some trucker buys the game, then technically it would become one of the RAREST video games on Earth, but like Pat said in the video any Joe shmo can make a couple of copies of a Atari game in their basement and if they sell the game it becomes "The Holy Grail" of Atari 2600 games. When Nike or some other company does a "Limited" run of 50 shoes/what ever, that product immediately becomes SUPER RARE, the point I was trying to make when it comes to Atari 2600 games, is because they let anyone build ATARI games and there was NO QUALITY CONTROL, the whole RARE and thus Valuable thing becomes SO subjective that it loses its meaning.There are still people making and selling brand new NES games (Micro Mages) is a great example, NOW that game is going to sell thousands upon thousands of copies, BUT if a person makes and sells a SHIT game on the NES and it only sells 2 copies, well guess what THAT is now the Worlds RAREST GAME!! does that make ti worth 90k? 50k? 25k? or next to worthless? Just because something is rare does not mean it is priceless. I can go and buy a 12 by 16 inch piece of canvas and slap some paint on it and claim that it is a one of a kind original painting and put it up on Ebay with a price tag of 90k, and it would be technically SUPER RARE, if someone buys it for 90k, good for me, but mean that the fair market value for my painting is 90k?It is ONE OF A KIND!! but so what.
@tbirum5 жыл бұрын
OK fair enough. I guess the big problem I have with Atari is (and this is what helped bring about the video game crash of 1983) is that they had no quality control and allowed ANYONE to produce games for their system.Nintendo I think instituted the "Quality Control/Official License" to help prevent another video game crash (However even some of the "Officially Licensed" NES games were fucking train wrecks, HOW some of those games got "officially Licensed" is beyond me. There are those who yearn for having a "Complete Collection" of a particular system, and because Atari never really had ANY STANDARDS, as to what constituted an actual "Atari 2600/5200/7800" video game I do not really look at games that came out by mom and pop companies that made 20-50-100 game runs that only sold in the North East of the United States as being "MUST HAVES" for your collection to be considered "Complete" Am I a serious collector? FUCK NO, but I do believe that my argument isn't "Invalid"I think there are a number of people who ARE serious collectors that would look at these types of games as not really being needed for a collection to be complete. (again Atari collectors might) but even Atari collectors know that because Atari letting just anyone make games for their systems, NOBODY in the history of the world is ever going to have a complete collection because 20 years from now somebody will find a Atari 2600 game that nobody has ever seen or heard of and has no idea as to where it came from. it would like trying to collect a complete set of board games, (not a collection of board games from a specific company) but a complete collection of every board game ever made, it would basically be impossible, so why try for a complete collection is you know going in that it is basically impossible?Even if Bill Gates decided he wanted to be the first person on Earth to have a complete Atari 2600 collection, he has the money but he would fail because there are games out there that people do not even know exist because the makers of the game only ever made 20 copies of the game, only sold 7 of them and all the copies are now gone (sitting at the bottom of a land fill)
@backlogbuddies5 жыл бұрын
@@tbirum Atari didn't let anyone make games quite the opposite. In fact even Activision games on the Atari aren't licensed and they were sued by Atari. A reason Activision never supported later Atari consoles. A lot of commercially sold games from third party publishers for the 2600 used hacked carts and second hand dev units that accidentally made their way on to the market. Atari initially wanted complete control over all games.
@tbirum5 жыл бұрын
OK normally I hate doing "Copy and Paste" but I think a bit of clarification is in order. -----------------> Activision - the good guys In what would lead to another defining moment in the video game industry, in 1979 a number of disgruntled Atari employees left the company to form their own - Activision - with the vision of crediting and promoting game developers along with the titles they developed, contrary to the policy of Atari. Ironically, this is rather contradictory to the treatment Activision Blizzard currently subjects it employees to (if you believe the media reports). Activision created a number of popular titles for the Atari 2600 console, and many were even more popular than original Atari titles. These titles helped increase sales of the 2600 but even so, Atari decided to sue Activision. Atari eventually lost the case in 1982, and the concept of the third party developer was born. So I think a lot of the lawsuit stemmed from the fact that "Activision" was largely made up of former Atari employees and they likely used a lot of the (lets call them "tricks of the trade") that they learned while working at Atari.If you hire 50 people to develop games for your company and then 4 years later 15 of them quit and start their own company and start making games that can be played on your Proprietary gaming console you might sue them as well. Anyway I am not saying you are wrong, but i think this sheds a bit more light on the whole Atari wanting to control who makes games for their system and why. Again when a portion of your work force decides to start their own company to compete with you using the knowledge you taught them, I think most people would have sued to keep creative control over your game system. And lets not forget, the video game crash of 1983, was due largely in part to a ton of shit games flooding the market with zero quality control.

I was actually making a case that you're right it's impossible to tell because we don't know who had actual dev kits and who didn't because there was so much cart tapering its impossible to tell
