1st thing, excellent pink text, Carrie. Made me laugh. 2nd thing, great choice for a one-off, Dan. I'm adding this to my wishlist. Last thing, the soundtrack alone is worth the price.

I have had to rewind bits of this SO MANY TIMES because the animation is SO COOL! I'm so freaking impressed at how expressive and readable and NATURAL the MC's animation is when they're literally six dots and a line (and a sword and shield sometimes)! It's just really beautiful to watch and I feel like I'm learning a lot about movement and body language!

Omg I love how when you first see your character, it’s almost like you can see an actual body, even though it’s literally just 5 shapes and a star
@charcharmunr

It's also neat because certain actions fill out that shape (like dashing) so you can see the character's full body, or sort of a 'what they COULD be' thing maybe.

It’s amazing that the developers of this game were able to tell us so much with so little. So elegant.

This gives me a strange idea. What if the skill tree WAS the map. If you don't put points into that branch, you can't go there. It might also take skills from other branches to go that way. Respec changes what you have access to, not what's happened, what you did stays done.

Fun fact and skill spoilers: when the shield glows orange, you can hold down Y (from your inputs) and it will make your character brace and when the enemy goes for a physical attack, your character will actually use her shield to push away the enemy. Interrupting their attack cycle and leaving you to attack. Another trick is once you unlock counter, and if your enemy is far away (Like the last one summoning the spikes), if you press your attack button immediately after you push your enemy away, your character will throw her shield at the enemy. Also if you ever want to figure out how to do something, go to your skill tree and select a node. There will be a small animation at the top left and under it is the buttons you need to press. (Also the up arrow means you need to damage the enemy while it's in the air)

It's amazing how much van be conveyed with just 6 dots. When Dan first started to gush and the character puled out her sword and shield it was immediately obvious through her movement and stance (feet together, hip slightly forward, fluid motion of the word) that she was female. And then later the hand slamming the floor when she fell, clear as day that she was angry. All that without any portraits, emoticons, text or anything.

At 21:50 you ask about metroidvania games where your progress is locked not just behind item/ability pickups but behind your knowledge of the game and its mechanics. Many people rightly point out the brilliant Tunic, where pages of information are literally something you pick up. But there is one truly excellent gem which needs mentioning: Toki Tori 2+. This is the true puzzle metroidvania! A good puzzle game teaches itself with cleverly designed puzzles that serve as tutorials for its mechanics. This is what you find as you explore, not the red key to open the red door, but the puzzle that teaches you how a certain mechanic works. Then you suddenly realize how you could have reached that high ledge, aha!, not because you can suddenly double jump, but because you know a new technique for manipulating your environment. You feel smart. No keys required, only knowledge. It is a brilliantly designed game, and deserves to be much better known.

Metroidvania where developing player knowledge is as much of the game as aquiring "key" abilities unlocking new routes? I think a certain fox in a tunic had a game like that...

21:55 - "Slowly untangling the puzzle of what the game is..." I'd say this describes the La-Mulana series pretty well. Alongside the more traditional powerups, a lot of the progression in those games involves gathering information to solve riddles/puzzles, as well as just figuring out how to navigate the ruins safely. They're the types of games where you'll likely end up with several pages of notes and hand-drawn maps by the time you reach credits. Great games, highly recommend! They're incredibly hostile and don't do much to hold your hand, but they can be a breath of fresh air if you're in the mood for a struggle

Very happy to see you check out this game, I'd been looking forward to it for a few years and binged through it when it came out. It pretty much completely lived up to my hopes for it, if this looks interesting to you I absolutely recommend giving it a shot. Like you can see with the bow he found later on this game lets you grow a fair bit more than what you can see at the start

Sadly, the perfect block mechanic makes this a pass for me. After Individible made it a requirementto beat the game (that or a lot of boring grind), I now auto pass on games that rely on that mechanic.
