We make our predictions for the 2023 League of Legends World Championship, identifying the favorites as well as dark horses that might have a shot at an upset. While it's easy to write off the LEC and LCS teams, can any squad from the West make a deep run? The strength of Korean and Chinese teams is undeniable, but some of these teams could crash out of the tournament earlier than expected and we're here to tell you which ones are in peril.

Correction to Dom at 1:29:00 : JDG and G2 aren't the only team who won Spring, MSI, and Summer. And was coming into Worlds, on track to having a Golden Road. In 2018, RNG also won Spring, MSI, and Summer.

As a watcher of chess tournaments where they often use Swiss system, I prefer it to the old one because every game will matter. The only gripe I have is that we essentially have 5 rounds for 16 teams - a lot of luck and variance will be involved. With 6 out of 16 teams going into the final round, I would prefer the draw to be based on strength of opponents in past 4 rounds (SB score) instead of random.

FPX choking wasn't actually that surprising when you realise that Nuguri had been an issue all year, literally not communicating with the rest of the team, with Doinb being a partial exception. And Tian had serious wrist issues and some mental challenges going on and Doinb was hard-carrying them through regular season, but also being the communicator between everyone on the team and looking after everyone.

Do you really think that performance isn't relevant if the player is having issues? Should we excuse Hans Sama for last year on TL because he was home-sick? I'm not flaming Nuguri, but he was obviously an issue performance wise, especially since Doinb was the one picking up everyone's slack, hard-carrying them in the game and outside of the game.

Ikr, the amount of hype that RNG, specifically Uzi was heralded as the best team and best player in the world coming in the tournament. In JDG’s defence, RNG was a very one dimensional team where you know that all resources were poured into the bot lane and solo lanes were vulnerable. JDG has no weakness in those regards. 369 and knight can easily carry games if they are needed.

I am not sure where I hear/read this but I am pretty sure the team minus Oscar are were in Korea early. Oscar came later because of a doctor's visit.

I think upsets are fine and way more entertaining when telling stories. If the favorite just won, why not just have a world final that is LPL 1 seed vs LCK 1 seed and can the rest of the tournament.

Its because they are doing well in SoloQ so people are hyping them up from a skill perspective because Apa and Yeon are both crushing Korean SoloQ.

Monte continues to astound me once or twice a year with a take that HAS to be made to get interactions but it genuinely baffles me. To say you HATE upsets? So he didn't enjoy the drx run last year? He didn't enjoy G2 winning msi / making worlds finals or TL beating IG? I've only been watching since 2019 and upsets are what make pro lol incredible. I mean maybe it's an American thing??? In physical sports like football we had the Morocco run in the mens world Cup, and the aussies in the women's.... the hype that generates is insane. Hell if we didn't have upsets we wouldn't have had perkz and the original g2 uprising?? Horrendously bad take, up there with if not above supporting the super league in football unless I'm misremembering that. Upsets are how you see change and evolution of players, teams and sports as well as the perception of them.

The reason they tend to dislike upsets is because later in the bracket the team who won in an upset usually gets smashed. DRX is the exception here. TL vs IG is the perfect example. G2 vs IG in the finals would likely have been a much better match. When he says he doesn’t like upsets, I don’t know why you’re taking it as him meaning that upsets any and all the time are terrible and bad. It’s clear that it’s not meant to be that absolute. Just “generally I dislike upsets”. Monte himself was very happy about how the last worlds turned out. He tweeted as much after DRX won.

@zohairkhan5755 however that's the jeopardy that makes sports great. That's what puts sport on another level to watch, there's an element for me of second chances giving less meaning to an upper bracket, because they're not going to be out whatever the result. That's what grips viewers AS WELL as the quality. If you don't beat the other team, especially in anything more than a best of one, then tough you weren't good enough. Doesn't matter what happens in the next round who could have beat who. There is for sure an issue with having same regions play each other and not enough bracket format games at worlds imo, I haven't looked in depth at the new format yet. Maybe it's because I'm from the football World and lower league teams / teams fighting their way into the top level causing upsets by whatever means necessary is romanticised but there's such a punch down mentality onto lec, lcs, minor regions for the sake of "good league of legends". Not to mention to say IG v G2 would have been more hype, I started league just before that summer split and went back and watched the semis and final of msi. Nothing could have been more hype than the way it played out. Sure the quality of opposition would have been better for the final but that's not what tournament's are about. Don't get me wrong, I do still respect his opinion on the game and enjoy his content. Just the occasional elitism view baffles me.

I don't get why this is worth an essay. Monte isn't having a take or even an opinion here. He just said he hates upsets as a passing reason to why he wants to see XXX team win. There's no argument in the video on the value of upsets in sports. Is this like one of those arguments you're having with yourself in the shower but you can't hold yourself back any longer so you vomitted it out in the comments?
