In and out of Key West for over 50yrs. Some of those homes are historical and cannot be torn down. The city has tried to keep it as original as possible but politics seems to play a role. Keep in mind in Key West the weather is everything ..

I lived in kw just like this but I didn't consider it poor, back in the 80's many lived just like this before the big boys w/$$ attacked the island.

Grew up in Islamorada in the late 60's. Lived in a trailer on a canal off the ocean. Still remember the smell of fish fry's on friday nights.

Dude, get over the rich man mentality. I spent time growing up as a kid in that exact neighborhood in the 1960’s. That #1 is the Stock Island portion of Key West. We lost another trailer we lived in around the corner from that neighborhood in a hurricane. I went to every major school there. Even one near the Hemingway house first as an elementary, then turned to a Jr High and now is the School Board building. Even though it has changed in many ways, it is the diversity of people’s that make Key West, Key West. Leave the bigger city mentality behind. When you have people, you have problems. That don’t make it a hood. And yes, it has the feel of the tropics, surprise, it is the tropics.

Wow. During the 80's while growing up in Cincinnati, we had friend who moved to Key West. Her Mom worked at McDonald's, but not sure where her Dad worked.

It's designed to make certain ppl with little, or no income to live in low poverty areas that look like crap & ppl with higher incomes live in better neighborhoods. However, I still don't understand even the ppl who doesn't really work able to afford living in 2,000 to 3,000 dollar condos because everybody's parents not making a lot of money & there must be some kind of other programs for college, or secret society clubs.

I had no idea as I have never been to the Keys. Orange Beach and Gulf Shores business struggle to find help despite the fact they offer 18 to 20 an hour. Still can’t afford to live there with those wages, which are only seasonal jobs by the way. No one is going to drive 30 to 50 miles through traffic each way for an extra few bucks. I won’t anyway, nothing to gain.

I watch videos on places all over America.. This doesn’t look like a run down area. Over crowded-yes

I expect it to look bad there, that is often the US' ground zero for alot of Hurricane landfalls, and the water is warmer there than anywhere in the US so Hurricanes are at their strongest there; those areas have taken a terrible beating, it has nothing to do with funding neglect or lack of infrastructure upkeep just bad natural disasters.

It's too far to commute. I was stationed in Key West in the Navy in the mid sixties. It was a decent place to be back then. Now it just sucks.
