They are named after the Chinese solar terms. The two big characters show the names

Hey this is Octopus from Vintergron inks (on an alt, lol) and besides making inks, I also can speak a little bit of chinese. TL;DR these inks are systematically named after different seasonal periods. They aren't bad names; these inks are just made for a chinese market, which is why they don't have english names. If you're interested in the actual translations though: Fei Chang Bang (非常棒)means "very good". So the store name just means very good. But Bang is pronounced with an "ah" instead of an "a". This set has 24 different colors, each corresponding to one of the 24 different solar terms, which are a traditional chinese time measurement that cycles annually. The chinese name for these solar terms is "jie qi" (节气) so the name of this series (er shi si jie qi, 二十四节气) just translates to "The Twenty Four Solar Terms". "Atlantis"/ X has a name that translates roughly to late january, or, more literally "great cold". (da han, 大寒) "Ash Gray"/ T corresponds to late november, or more literally, "light snow". (xiao xue, 小雪) "Pinkalicious"/ L is da shu (大暑) which corresponds to late july and literally means "great heat". "Popcicle Purple"/ Q is han lu (寒露) which I believe translates roughly to "cold storm" and corresponds to early october. People have already mentioned that these are named after solar terms and such, but I thought this warranted a little bit of a deeper dive. 谢谢你们都我的报告!

About 3 or so years ago, smack in the middle of the Covid pandemic, my lovely wife got me a set of six different little bottles of ink with gold fleck in them and a glass dip pen, all in one gift box. Those little bottles look just like your bottles, and even your dip pen looked simular, except that mine was more like iridescent sparkle. As far as glass dip pens go, I own 3 J. Herbins, 2 Italian made ones, 2 American made ones, and that Chinese one that came with those inks. And believe me, there certainly is a difference in their quality. For me, the J. Herbins are the best, the Americans are next, then the Italian, and then the Chinese made one. Btw, you can make both nib and flow adjustments to a glass dip pen using emery cloth. Just be really gentle, don't rush it, and constantly check the development of your grinding. Thank you for another great video. Cheers😊.

The ink names are on the side, they're the bigger characters above the part that says "Ershisi Jieqi" in English. I don't know what they mean but I found these inks on a shopee listing and the images have romanizations of the names. "Atlantis" - Dahan "Ash Grey" - Xiaoxue "Pinktastic" - Dashu "Popsicle Purple" - Hanlu I tried google translating the images, the names are stuff like "Great Heat" and "Cold Dew" so I guess they're related to seasons?
@jacobling2119
@jacobling2119 5 ай бұрын
Dahan - 大寒 - big cold, or big winter. Xiao xue - 小雪 - small snow, small snow fall Da shu - 大暑 - big summer, hot summer Han lu - 寒露 - cold dew, frozen few, ie like a cold freezing morning Their inks have their Chinese name all on the label, the bigger 2 characters. More like a description of a scene, than the actual weather/seasons.

Are you concerned that the glitter/sheen will clog the feed mechanism?
@Doodlebud
@Doodlebud 5 ай бұрын
The shimmering glitter particles (this ink or others) can clog the feed oof the pen. That's why I used a pen that is super easy to take apart and clean out. After a week the pen still writes without any issue but as the ink level goes down there will most likely be some build up left over and I'll clean it out

I love my cheap glass dip pen, but I did have to grind it on some wet and dry sandpaper before it worked properly. I don't think the factory where they make them really understand ink. When I got it, it was ground to a point, but that means the ink isn't anywhere near the actual tip. I ground the pointy bit off to make it flatter and now they always work. The only problem I've had is really wet ink (eg Diamine Cinnabun from the '23 Inkvent) just slides right off the glass nib so it writes really fat and wet.
@Doodlebud
@Doodlebud 5 ай бұрын
I've ground mine as well as the point was just waiting to bust off. I might have to grind it down more as it seems the spirals end further away from the point and aren't always feeding the tip
@Chrisamic
@Chrisamic 5 ай бұрын
@@Doodlebud Yes that's the problem exactly. Holding the pen at a slightly lower angle also helps. I would hope that the really expensive glass pens are better. There were no instructions or acknowledgement that the cheap pen was unusable until you did some work on it, but then it was only $2 as well. If I did buy one of the expensive ones, I'm pretty sure I'd drop it and break it the same day.

@@Doodlebud There are 2 alternatives to those nibs one of which is the Pilot Iro-Utsushi, and the other is the fountain pen style Kakimori Dip Pen Nib. They are quite a bit less expensive than the conical nibs. Want a wider tip, then the Sailor Hocoro might be the way to go!!

I bought one last year for a few bucks. Awfully scratchy, awfully bold, my writing looks weird, not enjoyable. I don't know if it's just a bad one or it's as good as it gets.

I prefer the shorter bulb tip, find the ink dries too quick on the longer tip. You can lightly sand the tip to yr writing comfort. I find them incredibly smooth and make my writing elegant. Do agree unpredictable tho!

There are cellphone apps that translate automatically by just pointing the camera to the writing, you definitely should look for them. I envy you for being able to order inks in winter without risking the bottles to explode because of cold! Great video!

There is so much reliable ink and so many excellent pens available at reasonable prices, why does anyone feed the beast of cheap Chinese crap? It's not merely the cheap crap, but the environmental costs of shipping and disposal. I do agree, however, that glass dip pens are at best annoying. I use old fashioned steel dip nibs, my William Shakour #8 dip, and a small spatula for larger smears.
