30 years in CA so I've a few to add. Mann's Chinese Theater. If you hang out there a little bit, someone will usually come up to you about seeing a potential new show. DO IT! I've done it three times and it's awesome. You watch the pilot and give feedback and that feedback determines if a show makes it past pilot season in many cases or the pilot gets redone and retested. I previewed Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and Big Bang Theory and another show that never made it because it was awful. Venice Beach. Look deeper. The joy of VB is the people. The street shows juggling chainsaws on a unicycle and all that. The street artists making amazing art in unusual ways, the people walking on the boardwalk looking more unusual than you've ever seen on a Tuesday outside of a parade. You may even see someone trying out their act before going on America's Got Talent. VB is a place you go for the day and just watch people. Watch for 15 mins then go a block and stop and watch and on and on. Then get some sunglasses from the sunglass stand because they are bomb and cheap. Reapply your sunscreen. Venice Canals are amazing, but do be quiet and respectful. People live there. Keep it the serene place it is so they don't ban tourists from going. Take a studio tour. Some bits are hokey, but some are amazing. Stay with your group though. My Mom and I got lost and went in a door into a place they were shooting, walked ON the set. Wups. Memories. Griffith Park Observatory. Go when they have a light show. It's set to music and amazing. Go to La Brea Tar Pits. Not because I know it's great, but because I never did and I regret it. Only thing I didn't do before I moved.

im originally from LA and got out of there 15yrs ago to much affordable and not a tourist trap 2hrs from LA a smaller county.in a very beautiful mountains and trails .we have movie stars nobody bothers them no paparazzi ever come out here.beaches to go fishing ,crabbing and lobster fishing. just need to get a ocean fishing license.its very family oriented ,cozy and friendly people .yoga places and good restaurants for every pocket book.we are know for our potters,storytelling and theater.LA is a hot mess.when lived there in the 1980s it was just punks and long hair metal bands.it wasn't gentrified.it was sleazy and druggies,hos, teen runaways.cruising on the blvd on fridays.i had enough stories about living there and moving on from there there was the free Max Factor museum for free. starving musicians eating $5 bucks Buffett.Mayflower market and rock and roll Dennis restaurant and rock and roll laundromat.

Really? That is a shame. When I was aged 15 to 16 I lived in the US for 18 months back in 69/70, in Santa Monica to be precise, and I have fond memories of Santa Monica pier, just being on it and fishing from it. I do not remember it as crowded. All the family spent a lot of time on that beach, surfing etc. We thought it was great, although my mum said that she used to get surprised comments from neighbours who thought it strange that each summer day mum, the 3 boys and young sister would traipse from our bungalow at 1025 19th St to the beach clutching boards, ball, towels, bags etc instead of driving! We boys would have opted to go by car if mum had been able to drive! But we really liked Santa Monica. I had one incident that I am not sure would happen now. I was walking over that from a hazy memory was a metal bridge that spanned the road behind the beach, when two policeman approached me from the opposite side of the bridge. They stopped about a few yards in front of me and asked me something or challenged me (I cannot for the life of me remember what it was). Anyway, in response I reached into my jacket pocket and they both immediately drew their guns and pointed them at me. Once they learnt I was not American they let me go, after no doubt getting my address, but the nice part is that the following day two policemen turned up at my parents house and apologised to them and to me for the incident, which everyone was tremendously impressed with and thought it a lovely gesture. Would that happen in this day and age? Sorry, all off topic, but nice memories, maybe rose coloured from what people are saying. I do hope to go back one day soon.

I was a costumed character on Hollywood Boulevard (and Times Square in NYC, and the Strip in Vegas). I wasn’t a “Mascot” character, I put effort into my costume and into my appearance. Made good money, posed only for tips, and behaved myself. As someone who loves cheese, loves living in LA, and enjoys almost everything people bitch about being touristy, Hollywood Blvd is actually really lame. I like Venice, Santa Monica Pier, 3rd Street Promenade, LA Live, and even am okay with Universal City Walk, but Hollywood Blvd just comes off so scummy and like such a cash grab, there is little good I can say about it. Last time I was there we just went to go to Dave and Busters for a bit, and I was reminded why I don't like it very much.

I would recommend visiting Hollywood Blvd at least once though, if its you're first time in LA. It's just one of those must-see places that you can do once and then check it off the list. Just like Times Square in NYC. Plus, if you're into historic old hotels, I would highly recommend seeing the Roosevelt Hotel near Hollywood/Highland. Beautiful old hotel, lots of history. Also one of the first places the Oscar's were held at. And it is nice to see the Capital Records building from Hollywood and Vine. And I still think it's pretty cool to see the elephants and archway from Cleopatra on Hollywood and Highland as well. And the Chinese Theater is definitely also something I believe everyone should see at least once, since it has such a storied history (not to mention the building looks super cool). The El Capitan Theater is also really cool to see in my opinion.

As a LA native currently living and working in NYC, I would say the Hollywood Boulevard is definitely a tourist trap, just like the Times Square here in Midtown Manhattan. I never went there when I was living in LA. Santa Monica? Well, as a native of Santa Monica who lived there all my life before moving to NYC, I would say while the Pier and the 3rd St promenade are full of tourists, it is still a pretty cool place to walk around even as a local. Rodeo drive is so overrated in comparison to the Fifth Avenue/Madison Ave or Chelsea/Soho here in NYC, the street is just too short, it would only take five minutes to walk through, I would much rather go the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa for shopping if I were in LA. Unlike the Chinatowns in SF and NYC, LA’s Chinatown is not where you should go to get the authentic Chinese food. the Chinese food in San Gabriel Valley is much more authentic, just like I would usually go to the Flushing Chinatown/Manhattan Chinatown to get Chinese food.

When it comes to seeing celebrities on Rodeo Dr, it's literally a 50/50 chance!! There's tons of celebrities living in LA. I took my first trip to Cali last week and all I was hearing was "Don't expect to see any celebrities on Rodeo"... My best advice: don't expect to see any but don't be surprised if you do! I happened to see Jaden Smith shopping at LV on a random Thursday afternoon! Bro took a pic with my mom and everything :)

I found the mascots to be more aggressive in LA, particularly because it seems as though there are no regulations against them and they can go anywhere/harass anyone. Also, Union Station is across from Olvera Street and is a BEAUTIFUL old station that is filmed constantly for good reason. I think you basically covered all the scams, although I think Santa Monica Pier looks nice from afar and doesn't even warrant a visit to the actual pier.
@HereBeBarr

Thanks. Yeah, I like the Pier but only when it's not crowded. I'd give Third street promenade more of a pass if I had to choose between the two.

was at the hollywood walk of fame last march with my family. my 9 yr old kid was amazed seeing spiderman and chewie. he gave them a hi five and a hug. they said just take a picture cause its free for the kid. but after the pic, the 2 asked for donation. so it's just fair they are trying to make a living. i gave them 5 bucks each but they demanded more. and they said they dont take anything lower than 15 bucks. as i argued a bit, i noticed other costumed people came around to ask what's going on. kinda bit scary since thor was huge and completely coming next to me. i gave them 30 bucks and just left cause my wife did felt the tension and we might get mugged since we are thousands miles away from home and we cant call for help.

Pro Tips: Stay off of Hollywood blvd as mentioned unless you want to see the stars. For great food and shopping go to Glendale ( 10 - 20-minute drive from Hollywood), lots of great middle eastern restaurants, great Armenian markets with amazing treats, food, and delicacies. Brand Blvd in Glendale has lots of shops and restaurants and isn't packed with tourists. The Americana at Brand is like the grove but has a bigger center area, can still get packed at peak hours, but parking there is easier and they have lots of stores, and restaurants. Magnolia street is pretty cool in NoHo, GO TO PORTO's BAKERY!!! Pasadena is pretty cool, Norton-Simon museum of art is worth checking out ( FREE WITH STUDENT CARD). Cal trans building in Downtown is a good photo op. Hillhurst has a lot of nice restaurants and isn't usually too cramped, Go to Yuca's taco stand on Hillhurst. Arts District is cool, can be shady but is fairly safe, some guy might try to sell you knives on the street though.

Hi, love this channel 💖💖! I'm born and raised in beautiful Los Angeles. A must see is gorgeous Griffith Park and the Griffith Park observatory. The park is free and has a historic carousel, golf course, trails, horse rides for the kids, a smaller train section, Gene Autry Museum, and the famous LA ZOO. Some of these you pay, but the park is like a mini central park. The observatory has the best view of LA. (Entrance fee.) Also, you can't beat the nearby Hollywood Bowl and Greek Theater for summer concerts. I love 💖💖💙💙 LA, Can you tell? 😊😊😍😍

By far this is the best video for things to avoid, i went there in november 2018 and all is true. Don't waste time and money on these things. For me the best free things to do in LA was the visit at the exhibition rooms in Griffith observatory, the view from the top of Los Angeles city hall in downtown, the hiking to the Hollywood sign starting from Lake Hollywood Park (bring a lot of water), walking the santa monica pier area and the Broad museum in downtown. You can do easily all this by your own, you can use uber or metro or rent a car.

What?! We don't get monks here in LA much. Been here since 1969 and I've only seen 2 monks in the entire LA area and they were just tourists visiting with a travel group. But you will see a lot of homeless people here. Stay away from downtown, parts of the area is not safe, a real health hazard plaguing the city.

Technically this isn’t a scam but once you think about it, you’re still getting ripped off, if you come to the jewelry or diamond district (hill street by Pershing square) don’t just go to the street booths or the shops down at the street level to buy jewelry, go up to the wholesale and retail shops inside the buildings you will always get MUCH better prices up there instead of downstairs, and don’t be afraid to ask where the jewelery is made, usually they’ll be glad to show you their jewelers shop

I have to disagree with you on Chinatown. Although gentrification makes it very unfortunately that tourist trap, there are still a handful of local businesses that show the true charm and community of Chinatown, not the hipster coffee shops and art galleries. I don't think it's too hard to spot these businesses either because all it takes is some digging and getting past the trendy foody eateries.
