My grandfather passed away a few years ago, he departed this wisdom on me about 30 years ago. "Micky lad, if you ever go on a plane, be sure to request a seat in the back." He told me "Why grandad?" I asked him "When has a plane ever reversed into a mountain?" He asked. I miss that mad old bugger.

On a flight from Dusseldorf to London Heathrow, the trolley dolly was issuing snacks and drinks when the aircraft suddenly lost altitude and the engine noise increased dramatically. The stewardess looked directly at me and said, "we're going down."" We didn't and a few seconds later the captain came on the tannoy and said, "due to a strong tailwind we have commenced our descent to Heathrow". I don't know what happened that day but it was forty minutes before we landed. Worst of all, I was travelling with an already nervous flier and we had to make a connecting flight to Belfast.

23:40 I have known this story for such a long time. The second I saw this picture of Captain Sullivan, I knew what story was coming up. Also what happened in the cockpit was very confusing. The stall warning and the overspeed warning were going of simultaneously. It doesn't make sense because a stall warning tells you that you're flying to slow to stay in the air, while an overspeed warning tells you that you are exceeding the aircraft's speed limit.

I took a short flight from WA to CA in the U.S.A and we hit turbulence so bad that everyone was screaming and food carts were racing up and down the isles. All the luggage in the overhead bins was falling on us. Thank goodness it only lasted about 15-20 minutes but I (along with many others, I assume) really thought we would crash and die. I just didn't think it was possible to be shaking and jolting up and down so violently and still have the plane intact.

I was on a plane from syracuse new York to fort Lauderdale Florida when on decent we had to make an emergency landing flying through a severe thunderstorm to make the landing as one of the engines had stopped working. The turbulence was horrendous as at one point a free fall had us almost floating in the seats if not for the belts. The landing on the runway was extremely bumpy and emergency personal were there when we had to exit the plane down the slides into poring rain. Luckily everyone was alright except for some bumps, scrapes and bruising. It was an exciting/exhilarating experience that I never want to experience again.

Was coming back to Kansas City, MO from Puerto Rico in January 2000 and we had to change planes in Chicago, IL. Of course it had to be freezing rain outside. When we landed we slid a lite on the runway when we landed. Take off was a different story. Instead of cancelling the flight like they should have and waited until the next day instead of taking off at night during the storm. We were on the plane for pushing 3 hours because as they de-iced one side of the plane and finished the other, the first side was iced over again. They ended up de-icing the plane a total of 3 times before we took off. While we pushed back from the terminal and headed for the the taxi way, the Captain decided to test the breaks. Needless to say we couldn't stop and we're sliding all over the place. But we were eared for take off. My Mom was at the window seat, closed the little cover over the window and said, "If anything happens, just know Iove you," then we just sped down the runway and took off. I have never been so afraid that we were going to crash in all my life. We made it to Kansas City without incident and the weather was clear there. But it took me a while to ever travel at night and during the winter.

Sometimes it takes up to 2 years for an air investigation to be completed. An incident that occurred in 2/2021 will not have findings released for some time, and even in the most obvious circumstances an airline might not release the cause of that incident until the final report by the country's aviation accident investigative body. In the case of WestJet 3161, WestJet may not have released the cause, but TSB Canada already did, and that report is public information. All it took was a quick internet search for me to find the report...

7:55 Anthony was lucky. If the lithium battery had in fact already been compromised, the water would very likely have made the lithium fire worse rather than better. A lithium fire can break down water into hydrogen and oxygen, which themselves will also burn violently. It's best to let a lithium fire burn itself out in some kind of fireproof container rather than trying to put it out. Of course, it's unlike you would have anything that fits the bill handy on a plane. So all's well that end's well!

The last story is very sad and could had been avoided if the pilots had known and been trained and known about the new software computer that was installed and a sensor on the outside of the plane needed to be moved. Can’t blame the pilots.
@Corrie-_-
@Corrie-_- 2 жыл бұрын
There were glitches in the software just like with the Boing 747s. The pilot was more than capable and trained which is why he saved everyone by doing what he could manually. It had nothing to do with the software being new, it wasn't programmed correctly and glitched out. I totally agree that it wasn't his fault though and good thing he wasn't blamed 🙂

The computer malfunction could have happened because of something outside the computer such as a machine controlling the engine (which is connected to the computer) has been damaged and even if they knew about how to fix it, they couldn't have activated autopilot (which is connected to the computer) and take the airplane apart midair to fix the malfunction. The malfunction is not the pilot's fault.

The Boeing 737 max 8 had a mcas system that was supposed to prevent stalling as they very well should've told you. Boeing did not tell any airlines about this and didn't even put it out to the public. The mcas system would to put it at basic as possible, think the plane was stalling and point the nose down in response to try to prevent the stall even though the plane wasn't stalling.

So they're on final into Anchorage when suddenly he starts hearing this thumping noise outside the aircraft. It was, of course, fireworks, but it scared him TO DEATH at the time.

Flying back from Las Vegas to Muskegon Michigan we were coming in for a landing and due to the rain clouds and fog the ground was not visible. All of a sudden tree tops appeared and the pilot throttled hard and the plane began increasing in altitude. I honestly thought we were going to crash into the trees that were so close just below the plane. The plane was able to just miss the trees and, circled back for another landing attempt. When we got on the ground I was one of the first people off that pressurized aluminum tube and was thankful I was still alive. This happened back around 40 years ago. When you witness and survive this you never forget it.

I just found this out but one of the first fighter aircraft in the world was the British 'Qwerk' biplane. This aircraft was so accident prone it was ridiculous. There are accounts of the plane suddenly inverting midflight or doing loop the loops even though the pilot hadn't moved the control stick. There was a case of the plane blowing its cylinders out of the engine housing on start up (one cylinder I believe went through the tail of another Qwerk nearby). Another instance actually had the plane's engine misfire midflight, reverse the propeller, and it started flying BACKWARDS! There was however, a following for the plane. One of the first aces of the war flew the Qwerk and once he crashed into a tree upside down. Once he got himself down a British artillery officer ran up and asked if he'd crashed. The pilot glibly replied 'No I always land upside down in trees, it saves His Majesty the cost of replacing the tires.'

Back in 1985 I was returning from Italy with the London Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, following a concert tour there. We began a normal descent into London Heathrow Airport but shortly before landing the plane suddenly began to ascend. No announcement was made from the flight deck. We flew around for nearly an hour, which felt like forever, and the silence that ensued was deafening. You could hear a pin drop! A member of the flight crew came and peered out of a window as if checking the wing or engine on the right side of the aircraft. When we finally landed the entire choir burst into an impromptu rendition of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus! We never did hear the reason for this occurrence, but our performance appeared in a short newspaper article the following day!!

I was on a Qantas flight from Sydney to Perth in 2002, about halfway through the flight I glanced out the wind and was shocked to see another plane at the same level as mine passing flying the other way , it was so close a lady in front of me looked back in shock and said " did you see that, I could see the people in the windows of the other plane" , the planes must have just missed each others wings so f'ing scary

The only thing we got into was a large thunderstorm which caused terrible turbulence. Our plane just shook a lot. But the plane behind us had people who were getting banged by stuff in the overheads and getting thrown around. The plane dropped, for whatever reason, and people who were unbuckled got thrown to the ceiling! I don't know how we missed all that with only a rocking and rolling plane. But when word got around about what happened to the next plane, even though I felt bad for them, I was delighted to pieces to have not been on that plane. Why? I had my 2 year old son flying with me. That's why!

As a European flyer, 90% of my fights over the last 40 years have been full of landing clappers. US passengers need to fly everywhere as the country is so stupid huge so they take all this for granted. Just look at the current behaviours towards cabin crew over masks and one can quickly see how little respect US passengers have for the airline staff and their fellow travellers.

Or loosing all four engines due to incorrect quantity of fuel been loaded on the plane and having to make the worlds largest glider or the plane strikes the runway and catches fire the sou city incident
@aviationdude1
@aviationdude1 2 жыл бұрын
Actually the plane involved in the Gimli Glider incident was a Boeing 767, which only had 2 engines, and the worlds largest glider title goes to British Airways flight 9, a Boeing 747 which lost all 4 engines after flying into a volcanic ash cloud in 1970s. The Sou City incident was a result of a catastrophic explosion of the tail engine of a DC-10 which ruptured hydraulic lines and caused the pilots to lose all control over the airplane and had to use the remaining 2 engines to steer the plane vertically and horizontally to Sou City airport.
