A rare 1971 commercial starring former Washington Senators great Frank Howard. Also future Washington mayor Marion Barry was running Pride, Inc., a program to get black men jobs.

What an interesting news set. Not at all like the usual desk/backdrop/screen set up. This looks more like what I see now on CBS Sunday with Jane Pauley. I like the use of the darkened expanses of the stage. Also noticing the staging, how one anchor will be placed perpendicular to another anchor and each his his own set and camera. I don't know how many other newscasts looked like this, but it looks pretty progressive to me.

They mention the Navel Observatory at 2:20. That would eventually become the official residence of the Vice President

I don't think our country was taken off the gold standard 'till later in the year. Dec, 31 would be the last year of cigarette commercials.

Did anyone else notice Morgan Freeman at the 4:00 mark in the American Airlines commercial?

That sure sounds like Ernie Anderson voicing the Janitor-in-a-Drum spot. Too bad we didn’t get to see “James” Vance in action in this clip. And that closing theme was funky as heck.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I believe Paul Anthony (Ritacco) is the off-camera staff announcer.

Wait, is that the same Paul Anthony that freelanced in the 1990s (mostly at stations owned by LIN Television)?

That was an interesting watch. In the video, Paul said 1971 was his last year at WRC-TV, so this newscast was nearing the end of his time there. Thanks for the link.

Lots of other recognizable names in the credits. I do know that executive producer Herb Dudnick moved up to the network, where he did more or less similar work with "Nightly News" and the short-lived "Overnight". But could John Cochran be the same who went on to work as a White House correspondent at NBC and then ABC, or some such assignment? And was Cal Thomas the same who became a conservative commentator?

Affirmative on Cochran and Thomas.

24:46 Denny McClain sometime before he was hauled off to the clink for tax evasion; 1968 with the Tigers was a whole other lifetime ago...

Yep. The Senators traded the left side of the infield and Joe Coleman for a washed up McClain. Coleman proceeded to win 22 games with Detroit the next year, if I recall correctly. Broke my 12 year old heart.

...while McClain LOST 22 for the Nats just three years after winning 31. That was equally heartbreaking. Denny's personal life took a turn for the worse as well.
