Congratulations to Weekend Meteorologist Tom Kierein who's retiring from WRC-TV (NBC4) after 34 years of bringing the weather in the weekdays and weekends. Also congrats to current weekend Meteorologist Amelia Draper who's moving to Weekdays at 4pm and 5pm on NBC4 starting in July.

Starting tonight, Leon Harris(from WJLA TV ABC7) is back on TV. He'll be doing the weekend news with Erika Gonzalez on WRC-TV NBC 4. You have to figure that eventually Leon Harris will be back on weeknights when legendary anchor Jim Vance retires.

They were preparing to have him replace Vance when he sadly passed away. Harris left WJLA due to Sinclair's budget cuts.

I remember Doreen Gentzler from when she was in Cleveland, WKYC Tv 3, when it was owned by NBC. Awfully hot chick! Glad to see she's still doing well in D.C.

It's hard to believe Doreen is nearing 30 years at WRC-TV (NBC4) She's nearing 60 and is still easy on the eyes.

I noticed Steve Doocy of "Fox & Friends" in the "Channel 4 News: Live at Five" intro from 1986-1987. At the time, he was also a semi-regular commentator on the Joseph Wapner version of "The People's Court."

He replaced another fomer local reporter Doug Lelewyn on that show. Judge Wapner was my favorite.

Yes they dropped the font that has been the News4 logo for the last 20 years.

Maybe that's a good thing. I don't think the logo has aged all too well, especially in its last form with the letter "N" being taller than the others. I don't find it aesthetically pleasing. (Now I'm just nitpicking.)

Alan Bleviss voices the 1989-1992 opens, while John Pleisse is the current voice, succeeding Bill Ratner.

Have they dropped that font on the "News 4" logo (which I believe is a variant of Univers, but I could be wrong)? They might've been the last NBC O&O to hold it on their logo.

iamnomad101 the font changed but not "4" logo. The font is similar to the one used from 1978-1980.

The announcer on the opens from 1:12-3:24 was Michael D. Hanks.

+Jimmy Sanders I found the identity of the voice on SouthernMedia's News Music Search Archive (southernmedia-nmsa.com). Michael D. Hanks also did voiceovers for sister-station KNBC at the time. You may be right. Trying to find a demo reel using a link from the NMSA made me come across this on the Internet Archive (since Chuck Riley's site no longer exists, of course): web.archive.org/web/20071009114005/www.voicehunter.com/chuck.htm On that page, it lists Michael D. Hanks as Chuck Riley's brother.

MFSB's "My Mood" was never used as an opening theme; it has only been used to close out Friday's 6:00 P.M. edition since 1980 (I think they still do it today). I also can't help but say the 1987-89 opens (5:33-6:39) seem kind of off-beat. Also note the similarity of the 1987-93 logo to WTAE's longtime "4" logo (especially in 2D). WNBC had attempted to use one similar to it when it launched "News 4 New York" in 1980. However, the logo only lasted for a few weeks before it was changed to that die-cut "4" that would be used throughout the '80s.

Jean Vargas Alvarez Jim Vance only works a couple of days a week now. The sports budget was slashed, I predict in a year or two Comcast SportsNet Washington will take over the sports reports, like they do in Houston or Philadelphia, since they are under the same corporate umbrella..

Jean Vargas Alvarez Jim Vance is getting ready to retire soon. He is retiring at the end of next year or early 2016. If you notice, he's off on most Fridays and starting next year, He will phase out the 11pm newscast. Chris Lawrence or Jim Handly have been teaming with Doreen Gentzler. One of them will succeed Vance when he steps down.

Bob Ryan was part of WJLA's "Weather dream team" with Doug Hill aka "the Doug of Doom" or "Mr. Snomagaddon"", he's retired now. Jim Vance passed away from cancer.

Robert Funderburkejr Jim Vance is retiring. He will phase out the 11pm newscast next month. He rarely does Fridays. He will retire sometime in 2016 or early 2017. Chris Lawrence or JIm Handley will fill Vance's position.

+Muma XFahm (MumaX992) Bob Ryan left WRC in 2010 and moved to WJLA-TV ABC 7 for three more years doing the 11:pm newscast. Bob Ryan retired in May 2013.
