No plugs and valve cover set? Fun fact about the old Honda b series motors, they ran so clean that they didn't have an egr valve. Well, without oil in the plug wells they ran clean. Timing marks I believe, are inside a plug you pop off the top of the trans. I was a Honda tech many, many moons ago

They do have a cam sensor, and it's located....... inside the distributor. I know this, as my late dad's threw a cam sensor code, and after lots of searching, turned out that's where it was. New distributor, no more code. To check codes on these, there's a little jumper at the front of the center console, bridge it with a paper clip, cycle the key 3 times (I think it was) and it flashes the CEL in sequences.

Yep, the main relay is another common Honda of that era failure point, especially if you don't hear the fuel pump prime.
@elwoodwilliams5665

That was a good guess. It had to be either coil, ignitor, or crank sensor. I would have loosen the fuel line at filter & see if there was fuel pressure. Crank sensor controls fuel pump. If you have pressure, the crank sensor is good. Also could have pulled a fuel injector connector & checked for voltage when cranking, which is controlled by crank sensor. Then easy enough to remove dist cap & check coil & ignitor to determine which was bad. Us poor people only replace the bad part, but I understand why you replaced the entire distributor. Time is money when you repair cars as a living.
@AT-wl9yq
@AT-wl9yq Жыл бұрын
"Crank sensor controls fuel pump." No it doesn't. Whoever told you that doesn't have a clue as to what they are talking about. The crank sensor doesn't control anything. "If you have pressure, the crank sensor is good.}" Again, no. How do I know you're wrong? The crank sensor is just a sensor. It sends timing data to the PCM. In this case, we can easily rule it out as a possible cause. One of the crank sensors main functions is to protect the engine. If the engine isn't timed correctly, the valves can hit the pistons. So, if you have a bad crank sensor, the PCM won't let the engine turn over. Otherwise, you'll snap every valve in the motor. ""Also could have pulled a fuel injector connector & checked for voltage when cranking, which is controlled by crank sensor." No, for a 3rd time." No need to check for voltage when cranking. Fuel injectors get power directly from the battery. As long as the ignition is on and the fuse isn't blown, injectors should have power. A fuel injector fires when the PCM grounds it and completes the circuit. On newer vehicles that don't have distributors, the ignition coils are also ground side switched. "Us poor people only replace the bad part" Only if you know what you're doing.

About 20 years ago , I trouble shooted a ‘90 Honda accord no start . Most likely the same engine , don’t remember , but Honda seems to carry a series of engine and transmission for years until something better or cheaper comes along in their favor . It had fuel pressure , read injector pulse from a computer safe test light on an injector ( that’s all I got ) but no spark . Yeah , was in the distributor . So , I wanted to diagnose but not fire the parts cannon . Chilton had me checking an igniter and ignition coil but I wasn’t satisfied since all I had was my sunpro 7678 and the computer safe test light and not much more . Just was trying not to spend the guys money . Could have priced a distributor , new or used , but was hoping for simpler and on the cheap . I don’t cut corners , I prefer to do it right , but when it’s someone else’s money , I try not to spend their money . I could not do a proper diagnostic and confirm but I knew it had to be the igniter but want to confirm the coils condition . In a GM , it’s usually the ignition module , sometimes the pick up but rarely the coil . But you gotta check . It’s not always accurate to read a coil . At least in my experience . He got it done quick and easy by someone who took the initiative to get a junkyard distributor . So yeah , your absolutely correct. , after all the checking you can do , someone made it easy since most or all the diagnoses end the same , just get a distributor . It’s probably not even pricey anymore . Good job ! Your knowledge and experience precedes you . As always , thanks for sharing and helping us .

Once you pull the dist cap There are 3 wires on ignitor. you can pull the white/green wire from ignitor to coil & check w/test light while cranking. No light, no control signal from ignitor, bad ignitor. I'm like you, I only replace the bad parts.

Question Kenny. Would the oil down in the spark plug tubes be caused by a worn valve cover gasket (the type that has spark plug tube gasket either built in or separate). If so, why not go the route of changing the valve cover gasket? I'm just trying to learn something from you and not being critical.
@garyr7027
@garyr7027 Жыл бұрын
New valve cover gaskets will come with plug tube boots, and these boots here are shot and should indeed be replaced, along with new wires and plugs, more likely it's why the distributor went toast. Imo, this job wasn't but half done.

I would highly recommend replacing the valve cover gasket, as they'll come with new spark plug boots and replace wires and plugs. Biggest issue with these distributors is they run too hot from running old worn plug wires and prematurely quit. I've seen Honda distributors out last the cars if wires get replaced at regular intervals. Plus, only Denso or NGK ignition parts, Hondas don't like anything else. I'd be shocked if that aftermarket distributor last 50k miles.

So, right after you had no spark, not a good idea to just jump to conclusion of distributor… Next test would have been check control to injectors. If noid light doesn’t flash, then 10 distributors would not have worked because you dont have spark or fuel control. Also, no scan? What if you scan and it has a code for crank sensor? No crank signal, no spark… thumbs down…

Crank sensor is built into the distributor, that's the ignitor he was talking about. I'd get these in with no spark. I'd check for 12+ on power lead, and ground wire. If good, new distributor. With price of a distributor and the flat rate time to tear one of these apart, it's quicker and cheaper to just replace the whole unit.

there is NEVER a need to " guess " when it comes to electronics. what IS needed is a good digital volt/ohm meter with a 10 mega-ohm internal impedance, so it Never draws on the circuit being tested. with it you can nail the EXACT electronic part that has failed. thus NEVER making a " guess " that may be wrong.. mental midget " parts changers " guess. those sorts call it a shotgun repair. shoot it with a shotgun and anything that catches a pellet gets swapped.
