I said the same exact thing. Gunther's reign was nearly 200 days longer, but he only had a couple extra defenses. Theory faced better competition as well since Gunther defended against guys like: Madcap Moss, Xavier Woods, Ali, Broken down Strowman, Riddle while Theory started with Rollins and Lashley. Theory defended in more triple threats and won in the elimination chamber.

His match with Edge was a joke thanks to Finn Balor.

Credibility is precisely what he never had, it was fun the first few times to see how someone appeared to attack his opponent but in the long run that was what made Theory never look credible, heels win by cheating, they use dirty tricks showing their expertise and lack of morals, but Theory, all his fights were won not because he was smarter than his opponent, but because his opponent already had a rivalry with someone else, that made Theory look like a background character in other stories. And it didn't help that the version of John Cena he faced gave such a strong sense of weakness, if he had faced and won the 2020/1 Cena, I think everyone would have much more respect for him

I think both devalued the title. Del Rio first had that weird gimmick of a mexican / USA amalgamation staple(?) which then was stopped before it could lead to anything in order to put him into that league of nations staple where his US title reign was an afterthought. Then when Kalisto took the title the focus was more on Del Rio and League of Nations losing a title then on Kalisto's success which never is a good way to book a title.

@achimsinn6189 Well... while both the whole "Mexamerican" (I think that's what it was called. 🤔) and "League of Nations" faction and storylines flopped. They were still originally presented as a major threat. Hell, at one point, "League of Nations" had both the US and WWE Title. So by proxy, although there was no stories built around the US title itself, it was still featured in a top spot. I'll agree Del Rio's reign didn't do anything for the title, but I wouldn't say it devalued it either.

This, as well as Flair taking the NXT Women's title off Ripley. Which would have been fine but she didn't even lose it directly. They booked a triple threat so Ripley could eat another pin to give the title to an actual Champion like Io. Speaking of Io, and I know it's a MitB cash in, and they are stable mates now. Still it seemed pretty pointless to have Belair win yet another Triple Threat for the title, instead of Asuka retaining to get cashed in on, or better yet Io inserting herself to make a Fatal 4 way. It was just an eye roll moment as you know it was purely to get another "title run" on Belair to pad numbers. Though Io is doing work now, and the title is actually recovering with a fresh and actually pretty hype Mania match coming.

Professionalism outside of the ring is the most important key to maintaining fan popularity and success.

Simple: it wasn’t Vince’s creation. In a sense, you answered your own question when you mentioned that it got its start in the NWA and is the only championship that is currently active title with any direct lineage to the NWA/JCP/WCW brand. Vince notoriously disliked anything he didn’t make. It seemed like it was only resurrected as a way to give some parity with Raw at the the time as they recently revived their Intercontinental Championship (no joke, they actually got rid of the IC Championship for half a year) Also, Vince never booked his mid card titles all that well during his last 15 years with the book. But the US title mostly got used as a prop the most. Luckily; under the current regime at least it seems like they’re trying to rehab the title. While Theory ultimately missed the mark as champ despite efforts from both Vince AND Trips, the effort could be seen. There was at least a purpose there. Logan Paul is currently giving it more exposure, making whoever is the next champion seem like a big deal

And the reason is ridiculous at best and insulting on a normal level , especially coming from the mind of a guy who didn't hesitate to proclaim he organized a fictional tournament in Brazil to crown Pat Patterson as the first IC champ . I 100% agree... every Roman's opponent in his title reign just needs to be inserted into some sort of Bloodline storyline which of course became stale as his reign got longer.

Hornswaggle also held it and was the final champ. WWE always had issues booking cruiserweight/ light heavyweight.
