Back in 1986, Maurice Mad Dog Vachon was the king of professional wrestling -13,000 appearances. the fifth estate goes inside the artifice of professional wrestling - from blows cushioned out of the view of fans. But in a business built on theatrics, Vachon became an outsider because he really did inflict pain on opponents and even referees. Eric Malling follows Vachon to the working class neighbours of Montreal that were a hotbed of future professional wrestlers. Vachon retired shortly after his fifth estate profile and just one year later, he would have his leg amputated after a hit and run accident. He died in his sleep in 2013 at the age of 84 and remains a wrestling legend.

Saw either MadDog or Butcher Vachon at a live event in the 1970's in the Carolina's when the IWA was in town. Asked him for an autograph and got an angry growl and a "get outta here kid" The Greg gagne shoot with Jim Cornette on the Mad Dog airplane incident is must watch!

i drove for the WWF 88-91, and had to pick Mr Vachon from the Airport and take him to the office and then back again the next day. It was an interesting few hours i wlll never forget.

88-91? How is that possible? Mad Dog stopped working for Vince in 85, and in 87 he lost a leg and couldn't wrestle anymore. 😂

Listening to Greg Gagne tell that story is what made me click on this which was a suggested video in the sidebar. I recommend anyone to go hear it, it is one of the most funny and riveting stories you will ever hear about Mad Dog.

@@justgojustdoit3363 I heard Greg Gagne tell that story to Jim Cornette. That story is an absolute BLAST! I love it!!! Especially the part when Maddog is hanging out of the back door of the Plane, and saying:"It's so peaceful out here"! I literally WISH that I could have been there, and seen that. That was amazing!!! What a story!!!!!

This could have been a nice segment about Mad Dog Vachon, a Canadian Olympian and real success story. Instead it became more of an insulting, snarky hit piece against professional wrestling and, more importantly, wrestling fans.

I don't agree. It showed what the wrestlers did and how the fans reacted. The fans are 10x worse than the wrestlers because they perceive that what they are observing is reality when it's not.

Totally agree. I watched the entire video and Mad Dog kept it real and I honestly felt those last couple questions/comments the interviewer made was really pissing Mad Dog off to the point Mad Dog was about to chew his fingers!!! And to a previous comment about it not being "reality" a. Your not a true wrestling fan and b. Until the early 90's it was more reality than now!!!

I loved Mad Dog..I grew up in Montreal in the late 60s and 70s. Used to love going to Paul sauve arena and old Montreal forum and watching Mad Dog and his brother Paul and the other greats of the time. Joe and paul leduc, Don leo Jonathan, giant jean ferere(andre the giant) Eduard Carpantier, and so many more . The best days of wrestling. PS .. sorry for spelling mistakes, been a while.

The funniest thing that I ever saw, in my life, happened when we went to a wrestling match featuring the Vachon brothers. It was at the Sports arena in LA where the Lakers use to play in 1969 or 1970. Mad Dog was on the spron while his brother was in the ring. My friend "Crazy Carl" says to me and my friend Eddie, "watch this". He gets out of his seat and goes down to the ring and gets as close as he can get to Mad Dog. He starts yelling at him (Carl had a loud booming voice) "Hey Mad Dog, F*** You Mad Dog". He keeps yelling at him for a few minutes. Mad Dog ignores him at first but finally turns around to see who is yelling at him. You expected at this point Mad Dog would just turn back around and ignore him. But instead he leaps off the ring right at Carl. Carl starts running back up the isle with Mad Dog in hot pursuit. As Carl passes us he yells "can't stop now, gotta go". Carl then runs out of the tunnel with Mad Dog still chasing him. The match continues without Mad Dog. Now the match is over and still Mad Dog and Carl haven't returned. Eddie and I leave and go out to the parking lot (Carl was our ride). No Carl, no car. We had to walk home, which was over ten miles. We didn't have enough money for a cab and it was before cell phones. The next day we saw Carl and asked what happened? He said Mad Dog chased him into the parking lot and he (Carl) jumped into his car and drove home.

I saw Mad Dog rassle many times during the late 60's and 70's. What I remember about him beside resembling a fire plug is that he always looked like 5 miles of bad road! He must've had a tough tough life.
