You might not see this, but here's the reason т is written like m: In ye olde days, т had little serifs at each side, and over time those got elongated until they reached the baseline, and when a standardized cursive had to be made, the cursive т was based on how the «print» version was at the time: a square-ish m.

P C R W A V E интересных. I learned cursive handwriting last year, and I noticed that if you remove the side lines the cursive т resembles more the printed version, so I thought the extra lines where only to connect the letter. Спасибо за информацию!

The amount of verbal conjugations is even bigger in portuguese, only the structures are different. You are right that Russian sounds like portuguese at some points. It is exactly what I thought the first time. When i hear things like minya ..that sounds very very Portuguese to me. On the other hand, I think Russian sounds like Spanish, in its melody or lack thereof. I am a native Spanish speaker, and I can't help thinking it sounds a lot like Spanish entonation wise. I think this language will suit me. I am glad to be learning it . And Fyodar Shirin is the best mentor out there.

I'm kind of fond of handwriting, hence I'm disappointed to know that nowadays beautiful cursive letters (used typically in handwriting) are not taught at school anymore (they don't teach calligraphy anymore, but neither they teach proper handwriting!). It is so for latin alphabet in several languages (mine is Italian, but it goes like this for German, French and English, as far as I know), and then it appears to be so for Russian too! Or maybe they still teach how to, in theory, but then growing up students stick to the use of what they read on printed books and alike, that is, we basically imitate these shapes. (Of course I've translated your comment with google translate, because I'd like to already know Russian to read and understand it, but indeed I barely can recognize the letters to attempt to mispronounce them)

Listen, you dont need to worry about making it so clear for your Foreign students. There are so many many sites which teach the cursive writing of separate letters. Students who enter a Russian school, NEED to be able to recognize some of the various ways Russians write. NONE of the Russian language sites in English try to get the students familiar with the way real Russian teacher write. You would be completely unique if you help your students with this problem of reading ordinary handwriting. Finally there are so many times that students entering a Russian school, on the first day have to write a few Russian words, and a dozen times signing their names in Russian, NOT English! We Americans are so spoiled.

The video is very informative! But I think it's missing slightly more curves. So, к, п, л, ю, н, я won't look exactly like this and the differences from English would be very distinct. Also, as this is cursive, it usually tends to be slanted to the right. And capital letters are completely other story!! But this is canonic cursive writing and in reality everyone writes however they want. So, for the purpose of showing those letters it's pretty good!

Thanks for the videos. I can rapidly and accurately hand write with solid upper/lowercase block-style font. I don't write in cursive English, so you can imagine block lettering might be a more simple style to adopt based on muscle memories of the similar alphabets. Is there any tangible reason to expend all that energy on changing over my handwriting to cursive or should I just focus on proficiently reading it? What are actual people living in the root nations of the language going to think about this? Is it anything more than a display of personal and cultural etiquette? Thanks, again. Your friend Clark, from Kansas City.

1:26, I've just come across a different 'Б' in a phone cursive writing app which looks like a 'b' rather than a 'd', but with an additional short horizontal line at the top, is that also acceptable (there's no vertical line going off to the left, just a straight one going to the top)?

I teach 5th grade, in Hawaii, and we do not teach handwriting anymore nor does California, where I used to teach. I taught 11th grade two years ago and I was surprised that 3 or 4 of my students could not write in cursive fluently. I also am an English Literature professor and it amazes me when I read over my students notes and see that more than half of them print only in their notes. This is surprising since it has been shown, through research, that cursive writing is not only producing better memory skills, but is also faster in writing than print writing! By about 1/3 more speed than print. A little trivial information.
