Here is another complex sentence structure to use in your IELTS and TOEFL essay writing. The causative structure will give you another option to add variety to your writing and get a higher band or score.
Example of a causative structure: The Director had his staff work over the holiday.
Notice that the subject (Director) is not doing the action (work) of the sentence, the agent (staff) is.
In this video, learn to recognize the causative and action verbs, the subject and agent, and how to make sure ideas are clearly expressed. We look at both the active form and the passive, as well as other forms like phrases and mixed clauses.

I made a presentation on Causative Verbs, to explain its structure (active and passive with examples) to my ESOL Class colleagues. And your both videos equally helped me to understand and to thoroughly explain to others. Thank you very much, Adam, you really explained it very well.

I've just learnt a new phrase "brimming with sth(usually emotions or something intangible), and I read the example sentence as: " His recent triumphs have left the tennis ace brimming (over) with (= full of) confidence and energy." and I made one as " All of your lessons on this channel have left me brimming with knowledge of English grammar." Is my sentence correct? It seems to me that "to leave" is also a causative verb and it is like the other verbs "consider, make, proclaim, keep, find". They all have the structure as " Verb + Object + Object Complement". Am I right? Thank you Adam.

Adam, thank you so much for sharing this interesting knowledge. I have some questions based on this structure. The Causative Structure is a simple sentence, right? Like your example: The Director had his staff work over the holiday. If so, what is the role of the phrase 'work over the holiday'? Is it an object complement for 'his staff' or adverbial phrase for the verb 'had' or adverbial complement for the verb 'had'?

Can you please make a video on how to recognize Phrases and clauses in long sentences with many commas like the ones below. 1. One of these days, maybe soon, this trade war is going to end. 2. It will be a truly multipolar world, with Asia as one of its most domi-nant regions. 3. . Since the 2008 global financial crisis, emerging Asia’s combined GDP has grown 188%, versus 19% in the U.S. and 13% in the EU, according to the IMF. 4. Asia already has more billionaires, at 827, than second-place U.S. at 585, according to the 2018 Forbes billionaires list. 5. Without any grand design or pretense of shared values, Asia has become one of the world’s most economically integrated regions, second only to Europe, despite lacking a regional free trade agreement.

Hi Adam, thanks a lot for your interesting video. i have a question and it would be really appreciated if you could help me. consider below sentences "I had the mechanic fix my car last night." now regarding your video, are both sentence structures correct? 1) the mechanic was had fix my car last night. 2) the mechanic was had my car fixed last night. do both above sentences make sense?
@Mitsohumohashi
@Mitsohumohashi 3 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't it be more correct to use some sentences like :I was asked to have the mechanic fix my car last night.;I was asked to have the car fixed (by the mechanic) last night.". It sounds better to me, because the verb "have"? In these cases "have" doesn't sound like a natural passive verb for the causative. Adam spoke about it in his video, go around 10:15. You'll see that the structure you used was wrong. Good luck with that!

Interesting, as always. However, it's CEOs, not CEO's. The only time the apostrophe is used with plurals is when the abbreviation is one letter, or with the expression "do's and don'ts"

Event hough I learned about the causative... I'm still learning and that's great, thanks Adam. I have just a question for you. When you use this example:"Should the board decide to have its members commit to this policy they may risk a mutiny.". It sounds like a question. However it's not in this case because there is the complement "they may risk a mutiny".Is that correct? I just want to confirm it, let's suppose I write this :"Should the board decide to have its members commit to this policy?". I should add a question mark because it's a question, isn't it? I'd like to have your opinion about that. Thanks for taking the time to read.

This is quite late but that’s not a question, it’s basically a first conditional sentence being inverted to sound more formal. Search inversion on KZfaq and you’ll get it.
