Out of all the timing belt replacement videos I've watched for my WRX, yours is the only one that showed the process of manually turning the crank after putting everything together to see if it lines up, awesome work! I'm having this issue right now and wanted confirmation on how it's done shown on video. Thanks for delivering!

One tip to anyone attempting this. Always use a cam lock tool to keep the driver's side intake and exhaust cams from moving while you take the belt off. It'll keep your cams in the correct position and will prevent possible valve slap. also, NEVER use anything besides your metal gasket on the water pump. Liquid gasket can seep into the water pump and cause issues/leaks.
@Subieej20
@Subieej20 9 ай бұрын
I have a question, what if the double marks on intake and exhaust don't line up? Usually they are slightly off is this normal? If yes should I lock the cams with my locking tool with the old belt still on and put on the new belt with this alignment on or should I reset the timing to make them aligned? Not sure if this makes sense
@stupidazzle
@stupidazzle 9 ай бұрын
@@Subieej20 They should always line up. Usually if they're off this is because the tensioner is old and worn out and either the belt is stretched or timing is off a tooth. If they are off, re-aline them up exactly, and use the cam lock tool to keep them there while you install the new timing belt.

Hi I've watched you video a few times. Lots of great tips and I definitely got a lot of input. I had one question.... I am going to install only oem parts. I've read here and there about priming the tensioner piston before install. I've heard some people say that's only on aftermarket tensioners. Do I need to do it on my oem tensioner? I saw that you just installed and pulled the pin. Your help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

my tensioner is real tight with belt clearance to install it. Did you turn the crank over a little to gain some slack ? and also i was turning the bottom cam to align and the alan socket slipped and it spun a half turn i guess its prob ok but i did have to rotate it counter clockwise another half turn after that

ok my fix was i took the bottom idler pulley smooth one back off along with the little idler off placed the tensioner in with the belt loose and was able to reinstall the other tensioner much easier then trying to put the tensioner in last

Thanks for the video, learned a lot. Question for you, had my belt recently done by a mechanic in the neighborhood, great reviews on Google, etc, but not strictly a Subaru guy. Anyway, he changed all the parts, pulleys, tensioner, waterpump, etc. Used a Dayco kit. After I got it back, I noticed a whirring/whinning sound as I revved the car; the more I rev, the louder it gets. Took it back twice, he changed a couple of pulleys, tried a different waterpump, but nothing's changed. From what I'm reading, this usually happens when the belt is too tight, but that shouldn't be the case because of the auto-tensioner. Also, 95% of the posts I've gone though online tell me that there shouldn't be any sound, or a break-in period. Could it be the alternator? Power steering pump, maybe? I'm stumped, but worse, so is this mechanic. Would love to hear your opinion...thanks! I've got an '09 STI.

So happy I finally came across someone else in my situation. Import mechanic said, "it'll break in" "that's just what subarus sound like." I drove it for 2 weeks and brought it back to have it looked at and he said maybe it's something else that's gone bad.. The whirring sound is always at 1.5 -3k rpm. The slower my car is moving at that rpm the clearer you can hear it. Dudes full of shit for 1, 2 it's been 5 months now and the sound is still there and it's super embarrassing. I can't figure out what it is.

@Satsui AA Did you ever find out what the noise was? I also wondered if they replaced all idlers or not? I have a gilmer drive on a chev small block and the tighter it’s adjusted, the louder it whines. Hopefully yours isn’t too tight but as was said, the auto tensioner should set that correctly? I also wondered whether you used a Subaru kit or an aftermarket like Gates or Dayco. Cheers, Peter

What is the exact engine model number of this one? My 1999 Legacy Lancaster has a DOHC engine that doesn't look quite the same as any EJ25s I've seen before - it also has the 5th idler pulley, the small one at top right of the screen. None of the timing belt kits for my car have this pulley. Mine is seized. I'm wondering if someone in the past 2 decades has done a transplant with a WRX motor. My car's Fuji Heavy Industries info plate says Engine Type EJ254DWBKE. I'm wondering if the valve timing will be affected if I leave this pulley out. It only deflects the belt slightly, and most DOHC Legacy engines don't have the small pulley.

I started the car without the small pulley, and it runs nicely. I’ve ordered one for around $70 NZD, and plan to fit it when it arrives. I guess it’s a later improvement intended to lessen the vibration in the longest stretch of the belt.

Just did one yesterday water pump gasket had a little knick in it just enough to where once I got everything back together and was putting coolant back in I noticed a leak lol. I had to tear the son of bitch back apart (took about 20 min) but I was still pissed. I put a very thin layer of rtv which I never do but everything turned out good. Ive been curious to see if anyone on youtube actually uses the cam locking tool as that part can be frustrating too

I'm doing the timing belt on my 98 WRX motor and after removing the timing covers and lining up the timing I went to remove the main bolt again to clean the crank sprocket as it's filthy and I couldn't see the timing mark clearly while holding the top right cam (facing the motor) and I think it skipped a few teeth with the belt still on. I spun the timing around twice I think and the timing wouldn't line up, halfway through the third spin I felt a bit of resistance so I stopped. The crank is out, the cams are out, the old belt is still on. What's my best course of action? Take the belt off, turn the crank to tdc, then turn the cams?
@JaboTheMechanic
@JaboTheMechanic 3 жыл бұрын
If it skipped a few teeth than you bent your valves. How was it running before starting the job
@mydv9305txdied
@mydv9305txdied 3 жыл бұрын
@@JaboTheMechanic It was running fine before hand, no issues. It didn't skip teeth while the motor was running, just while I was trying to undo the crank bolt and holding the cam I think.

@JaboTheMechanic 3 жыл бұрын
Take out all of your spark plugs. Maybe your feeling compression resistance. If you take all of the plugs out. You should have no resistance. If you do than it did skip a tooth
@mydv9305txdied
@mydv9305txdied 3 жыл бұрын
@@JaboTheMechanic I took the plugs out, backed it a tiny bit then very gently tried to turn and felt resistance. If I take the belt off now, can I safely rotate the crankshaft back to it's timing mark without damaging the valves? Also can I turn it anti-clockwise or clockwise, whichever way I won't feel resistance? And then turn the cams once the crank is back in position?

Jabo The Mechanic yes i did, i took it apart again, but the crank pulley was loose for some reason, could that be the reason? Maybe the sensor detects it being loose or something and doesnt allow the car to start?
@JaboTheMechanic
@JaboTheMechanic 3 жыл бұрын
Yes because the crank a sprocket on it that The crank position sensor reads off. And if it is loose the sprocket can just move away from the center little bit and which would cause a crank no start.

I would not let him do timing belt change on my car.He had missed so many important steps plus handling new timing belt with dirty hands on dirty floor!! Why you need to make too many marks on the belt? It is only more confusing! No thread lock applied to any bolts? If you gave your pride and joy to this guy to do the timing belt I wish you all the luck that something doesn’t go wrong while you’re cruising along highways like big bang and stop all of a sudden!!
