@Focke Wulf German Cars today are trash much like American cars. Go read consumer reports or heck even scotty killmer youtube channel you will see the Japanese engineering is far more reliable than the money pits the Germans put out. The 1940's was a different time. I do agree with you back in WW2 nothing could touch the German Engineering it was far far ahead of its time, however the Japanese had superior planes than both Germans and Americans during the war

@Focke Wulf Well, nowadays there aren't many truely bad cars around anymore. The German brands you mentioned, however, are notorious for being much costlier (acquisition and maintenance) than other brands. So from a price-performance view, one might call them trash.

Rate isnt everything, you can make a very fast rate of fire just by overgassing it and a short bolt travel time a strong spring helps too. The extraction of the cartridges from the belt is truely a feat though.

The guys arriving on Omaha Beach had a different opinion. There were apparently only about four of these MG-42's in situ and they accounted for most of the killing in the first few hours. The German bunkers were to have bee taken out by bombing pre-landings but this failed due to a miscalculation and they were dropped around 3 kilometres away. Killing a herd of cow's.

I read from a war diary of an American soldier in 1944. This soldier described how the U.S. soldiers were initially quite emboldened as they approached the German positions. But when they heard the "bone saw" live from a distance for the first time, the advance slowed down as if by "magic". Some of the more experienced soldiers knew this haunting sound all too well. He described that this "melody" and enormous succession of fire had as frightening an effect on a person as the sirens of the Stukas. I can completely understand how this sound triggered a paralysis of fear.

+Charles D. Mercury II The firing speed of the original MG42 was 2000 rounds/minute. As the alloy of the release spring was kept secret and is unreachable in some safe in switzerland, todays follower of the german MG42 only fires about 1300 rounds/minute. No one could produce the quality of the original alloy of the spring. During tests, every spring was braking sooner or later. From the tecnical aspect, it was a good weapon- But my father told me, that under extreme conditions ( about - 40 Centigrades near Leningrad) in Russia, the guns sometimes didnt fire if they were not recently used.

The MG74 is a CURRENT issue version using 7.62mm The gun fired here is using the Light Bolt and is firing at about 900 rpm. In field use a much heavier bolt is used. Any rate of fire over 650 rpm (which is what was typical of the water cooled guns of WWI which the MG34/42 replaced is considered a waste of ammo. The 900 rpm of this gun is for anti-aircraft use. Some people also quite an 1800 rpm which is actually two MGs together.

Wow what a weapon. I’ll never forget when firing that weapon with the German Army Reservists while stationed in Germany. We fired the MG 43, G3 and P-08 during training and competition for award. It was crazy because we were only given a 50 round belt and instructed to fire 5 round bursts into each target. I remember the rate of fire to do that took some practice but I found that it’s heavy trigger pull really made that tuff. When I brought that point up to the range officer he laughed and told me that weapon has a lower firing rate set for training that is much slower than those equipped for combat. That blew my mind and heightened my respect for an awesome weapon.

Germany hadn't enough oil, Romania and Italy were traitors, all opponents had much more soldiers and population. The Russians in the east and the Yankees in the west, also soldiers from french, british colonies and nearly against the rest of the world. Germany has a shitty geostrategical position in the mid. Germany fought a 2-front, then a 3-front war against masses of opponents and with raw material scarcity. And the ""funny"" fact, the opponents needed 6 years to defeat Germany. The MG-42 was one of the best weapons of WWII! A machine gun with high rate of fire, accuracy and quality, low maintenance, easy to repair and simple to use. Even in the worst conditions of battle, in the desert, on the ice, in the jungle, with dust, humidity, water, it remained operational. Very German indeed, with its best reputation for design and engineering! So good that it had its original 7.92 mm caliber adapted to the NATO 7.62 standard. A weapon that remains current and effective even today, more than 70 years later... Paul Pecchio - bairro do Campo Belo - SP - Brasil.

MG42s cyclic rate was wastefully fast. It was just a matter of numbers and economic power, and as soon as the Allies and Soviet armed forces catched up to the Wehrmacht in terms of their doctrines and strategy/tactics, plus the big win in terms of intelligence and logistics (having broken the enigma coding machine and a much better thought military logistics), placed the last nail in Nazi Germany's coffin.

My grandfather told me when he was marched from his prison camp one night ahead of Patton’s army to a concentration camp mid morning the next day, they were appalled by what they saw. Their guards were regular German Wehrmacht, the commander a Luftwaffe officer. He ordered all the SS guards disarmed and contained them, questioning their commander. An hour or so later they lined them all up, had them about face, and executed them using two MG-42’s. Not long after, they surrendered to the prisoners they had marched there and started giving the starving people first aid and what they could. Two days later the camp was liberated.

When the German Army was allowed to re-form after WW2 they re-introduced the MG42 in the NATO calibre as the MG1. This seems like it still had the insane rate of fire, which was later lowered by a new bolt and the weapon was re-sighted for the ballistics of the new round. There is also a MG2. This is a conversion of actual MG42s from store to fire 7.62x51. So the MG3 is the evolution of the MG42 for the modern cartridge. MG42's were also updated to full MG3 spec.

Well let's see here, if we take the battle sense of each soldier and training, the scenario. All 3 lay on the ground and start arguing. The British starts digging a trench. The American starts rolling to the right to flank. And the soviet says "just wait for glorious t-34" In a nut shell american/ allied strategy was to flank and spank a place mg position. The British chose to rely on air support do to having more aircraft on standby as well as less of a chance to have casualties. The soviet ideology in a situation like this would be to wait until armored reinforcements could engage. This is evidence by many situations mostly seen in the post typhoon operations to push army group center back. Its believed if you can have a armored push you can cover more ground and be less likely to get stuck do to suppressing fire. German strategy was basically all hail the mg. If the my dies...... well that kar98 bolt action rifle won't do you to much good against americans who's main rifle is a semi firing rifle.... or the soviets who by 1944 gave all troops who were in urban combat ppsh submachine guns. And I mean everyone in urban combat. The brits.... well ig it would be a fair fight

Butch Coolidge, welllllll if the Russians British and American solider take out the Germans mg42 the Germans would be toast but since the MG42 will probably overheat ima say the allies would win

@@dirtysniper3434 The first mass rearmament of troops with rifles at the PPSh took place in Stalingrad in 1942. The Soviet command considered the PPSh a more suitable weapon for this operation than a rifle.

@@dirtysniper3434 In Leningrad alone, in one winter of 1942, the Russians lost more people than all the allies lost during the entire period of the war, taking into account all the losses, including among the civilian population. Most of the people starved to death.

This just shows how advanced the Germans were in their design and engineering. If they hadn't gone East they would have won comfortably. What a gun!

Wenn der Polizist mit der linken Hand an der Schulterstütze festhalten würde dann trifft man auch. Dort an der Schulterstütze ist eine Art Griff mit dem man das Gewehr in die Schulter drückt. Schöne Video!

That gun is still in use by many European countries as the MG1/MG3. Slightly lowered rate of fire and changed to 7.62x51 NATO rounds. MG42 (or post war Yugo MG53) is one of my wish list items. But the price has gone astronomically high.
