We've tested the red dot/magnifier combination thoroughly and believe that to be an excellent answer for the carbine - the lack of any eye relief requirement and quick aquisition is unparalleled.
However, we stil have not come to a conclusion about the variable optic. So, in this series of 2G-ACM videos, we're pitting the Trijicon 1-4x Accupoint against the Vortex Viper 1-6x PST.
The Trijicon is on Karl's 14.5" carbine and the Vortex is on Ian's 18" rifle.
The goal of this series of match videos is to determine the viability of both of these optics in CQB as well as ranged engagement, with this match biased towards to the CQB side. We'll also be testing similarly at a future AZ2Gun event which will be biased more towards longer range in the field.
Stage 1: Support side spinner!

As an IPSC / IPDA wannabe, I find these episodes extremely valuable. Instead of progressing through (expensive) mistakes an ignoramus like me can pick up the brains of this dynamic duo. I have already started to form an idea of how I can progressively customize an AR-15 platform for performing both long range precision shooting and IPSC ... chapeau to Karl and Ian ....

The Vortex Viper was never in the running for me.....my choices came down to the Trijicon AccuPower 1-4, the USO TS6X, and the Steiner P4Xi. It was a hard choice, but ended up with the Steiner because I liked the reticle best. I did watch the USO rep hammer nails into a board with the TS which was very impressive, but the Heritage warranty on the Steiner gives a lot of confidence too. At 22 ounces the Vortex was out quick, although if I wanted to drop more $$$ then I'd look harder at the Vortex Razor. The end of my story is that I really love my Steiner, and the holiday deal of $499 was a real bonus.

I was in a class once with an ancient history lecturer. He doubted the claim of some Greeks that they ran the better part of a mile wearing their Bronze Hoplite armor weighing the better part of fifty pounds (25 kg). He went on about how we have to take everything the Greeks say with a grain of salt (which is reasonable in and of itself as they were big braggarts). Then a little guy I never noticed before stood up in back and raised his hand. The prof asks him to speak and the little guys says he was a veteran of the USMC, ten years, mostly in Iraq, and that he and his were asked every day to jog a mile with 90 pounds (40+ kg) of kit every single morning. They did it fine. The Prof changed when he would discuss the need to be careful of Greek claims in his lectures from that point on. Semper Fi.

Viper PST Gen II 2-10x32 FFP because : 1) 2x is ok for short range (Fit an micro red dot offset if this bothers you) 2) FFP no reduction in eye box at higher mag 3) You need to be able to identify your target so 10x 4) See 3, so good for recc without other optics Leupold is spendy

I run a Leupold VXR Patrol 1-4 that is set up very similar to Ian's vortex. They are both good scopes, but the larger eye box is what lead me to the Leupold. On the reticule, I like the fire dot (a mil reticle with a small but bright illuminated dot in the center, very similar to the vortex) and it works well at any power, and even via the Bindon aiming concept if you get outside the eye box, but I find I would like a larger center aim point at 1x (perhaps a ring like Eotech) and more power at the top end when reaching out, past 200, or when shooting at small targets. I think a FFP 1-6 or 1-8 with a mill reticle inside a ring is just about the perfect solution. This gives you a usable, fine holdover reticle at high magnification, but collapses down to a large dot or Eotech like sight picture at 1x. Of course we are getting into some cash at that point.

I went the WWMD (What Would Mickulek Do?) route on my optics choice on my 6.8 - Vortex Razor HD G2, with MIL/MIL. The eyebox and FOV is much better on the Razor HD line than the Viper, but performance comes at a price. The Razor HD's eyebox is the equal or best of any of its competitors. I actually like the SFP reticle because if you do any ranging on a 1 - xx it'll be at max mag and the reticle stays thin vs. target for better precision.

Karl is there a reason you went with triangle post rather than German crosshairs? BTW I picked up a Vortex Strike Eagle last year and have been a little disappointed to the point of looking to change. Interested to see how things pan out for you guys with these optics.

We didn't really like the Strike Eagle much if you ever saw that review. Yes, the triangle acts like a very good "red dot" at 1x, which is more important than anything else in these scopes (imo). ~Karl

It would help if you used a handicap system (varying with the type of exercise) to bring the times of the two of you into closer alignment for comparison (in a systematic way rather than the ad hoc gut feel one I'm using now). Please note I intend this as a purely constructive suggestion, not as a criticism of anyone's level of ability. In fact, the handicap would be an excellent measure of personal progress which is the ultimate goal.

I had a Vortex Diamond back which is a hunting rifle scope. I had it on my .35 Whelan and after firing 8 shots out of the rifle sighting it in. Then doing some fine tuning the cross hairs broke I sent it back to Vortex and they sent me another. Back to the range with the same rifle and after 10 shots the same thing happened again after that I sent that one back and asked for my money back. It took some arguing but they finally refunded my money. But I'll never deal with Vortex again.

The 3 prong flash hider from Faxon on Karl's rifle has a tuning fork sounding ring to it every time he fires. Is it noticeable while shooting, for the shooter and bystanders? Or is it only noticeable on camera? To me, it would be annoying as hell, and I would only consider this product if the ring is only noticeable on camera and not in person. my .02 great videos and content as always, thank you.

I run a 1.5-4x Leopold BDM with a quick detach mount so I can get to my irons quick. I don't like the 1.5-4x for much beyond 150m, and at 100m it's not a match gun for certain. I call it a "parking lot" rifle because the 1.5-4x just doesn't do the 5.56 justice beyond those ranges. And if I was going to do it again I'd go with a true 1-4x, no 1.5x as a base. I'm missing out on being able to keep both eyes open at close range when I'm @1.5x, it just isn't natural. Picking apart a target with precision inside of 100m with the 1.5-4x is not a problem at all. But beyond 100m the shooting slows down a lot.

Bryan DeFabio - Yep. I put one on a Marlin 357 about 10 yrs ago. I call it the Hillbilly Patrol Rifle. On 1x or 1.5x, you can see the front sight. Nice big FOV and a huge exit pupil, so the eye lines up easily. The Burris 1.5-5x that i have on a Savage 98 .308 works well too. I also have a Millett DMR 1-4x that i'm going to use on something. Probably my AR (16" Bushmaster). Hard to go wrong with a low power variable for general use

Sounds like you have the specialized rifle game nailed down. As for all around rifle. Is there any reason youre not using a scope with lines, and 45 degree offset red dot? Best of both worlds, with little extra weight. Should be no issue, with your super light host rifle. And what about a 2 man team competition for specialized rifles? One man shoots the close range course. One shoots the long range. Add the scores together. Just a thought from a newbie.

What. Drum mags? I thought those were supposed to be unreliable. And these look small capacity, so marginally pointless anyway? I guess just to not interfere when you know you'll be going fully prone on flat ground, as in this stage here? Perhaps everyone else already knows about these considerations, and I'm just ignorant. Or perhaps small drum-mags are an unappreciated modern breakthrough, that you'll tell us all about in an upcoming review?

I have a Nikon m-223 1-4 on my current rifle. It's several oz lighter, which is very noticeable, and no illumination. I really wish there was a 1in tube 1-4 with simple two MOA hash marks going into a two MOA dot, Illuminated. Low profile, but adjustable, and zeroable, capped turds would be great.

薄熙来 don't act like there wouldn't be violence on a mass scale if there are no guns.. There are stabbings, bombs, cars running threw crowds, jets flying into buildings across the world. A lot of these places have some of the strictest gun policies in place.. Chicago. We see how that worked. Criminals have guns regardless of laws. I can watch a video of a guy getting his head cut off in England on KZfaq right now, no one did anything for the poor guy but film. If someone one is deranged enough to want to kill, it's gonna happen any way they can. If you wanna walk around and be a victim to a bad person that's your right, but don't try to shit on someone for choosing the right to bare arms. I have nothing but contempt for people who portray these violent acts against another human.

HisDukeNess you know that would have been alot worse if he had guns. Everyone else having one wouldnt have helped. He also isnt saying he is pro restriction. Just resigned to it.

Gun Jesus and Karl "marks" You know I was surprised to find out that Karl Marx supported people owning guns.

Insiainutorr T well that might be true now but they have always had guns.

Insiainutorr T information has always been the weapon of the elite. Dont ever think otherwise. And my point was that the soviets never took their guns away from them even if they were oppressive/kinda are still. However i have disagree that losing guns = to going backwards. Its sideways. Is it good or bad i dont know. I know id rather sacrifice gun rights than have religion and religious beliefs shoved down my throat about science and identity. But thats coming from an english perspective and I cant say what my opinion would be if i was an american born and bred.

Insiainutorr T self defence for culture is self defeating. You become static and boring and unhealthy much like inbreeding for genetics. I know what you are arguing for and I can see it but honestly cultures must grow and change.

Insiainutorr T its not really a cult mantra. Humans will never be homogenous. But as I said I can see your view point I just have to disagree because that is my cultural heritage.

I'd really like to hear you guys talk about field of view on these little 1+ scopes. Been looking at getting one for a while but haven't been able to find someone talking about the small objective lens and what that means for FOV etc. I'd really appreciate hearing about how it plays out in a dynamic setting.

the objective lens isn't a big factor, I use a kahles k16i and it has a massive field of view, but some lower budget/quality options feel like you look through a toilet paper tube at 1x although they use the same diameter objective lens and same 30mm tube size, so I would suggest to look through some scopes and then decide which one is best for you
