X-Men '97 is an American animated television series created by Beau DeMayo for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team X-Men. It is a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997), continuing from where that series ends. It depicts the X-Men facing dangerous new challenges following the loss of their leader, Professor X. X-Men '97 is produced by Marvel Studios Animation, with DeMayo serving as head writer for the first two seasons, and Jake Castorena as supervising director.

I loved the animation. Looked very fluid compared to the older series. I miss Magneto's and Bishop's old voices but that might be my only complaint. It's nice Jean isn't having orgasms constantly, though. I look forward to what else is coming. It's been a while since Marvel produced animation that felt like it rivaled DC's animation. Also I'm really glad to see what they've done with Morph, I found them annoying in the original. Much better, now.

Hold on! Hold on! Hold on… _Charles died?!_ As someone who loved collecting X-Men Comics, as well as *ABSOLUTELY ADORED* the Fox Kids Animated Series, I remember the series finale in which Professor Xavier, being deathly ill, went to live with his Consort, Shi’ar Empress Lilandra Neramani. He left the care of both his mansion and the X-Men to his students. At least, that’s what I _remember_ happening. Professor Charles Francis Xavier is my favorite character! I tend to gravitate towards father figures in all forms of storytelling (cuz reasons) and I’ve always found his origin story to be tragic, hopeful and fascinating! Though his motivations were pure- envisioning a World in which Mutants and Humans could coexist peacefully- some of his methods were questionable. For example, ordering Storm to commit theft knowing full well what her childhood in Egypt was like. And don’t even get me started on The Onslaught Saga- which, by the way, I thoroughly enjoyed and honestly didn’t see coming! So I’m kind of on the fence as to whether or not I want to check out X-Men ‘97. What I _will say_ to anyone who accuses the new show of _“being woke:”_ 1.) Congratulations on falling for Conservative scare tactics! There’s nothing wrong with be educated or… you know… *awake!* 2.) *X-Men has always been woke!* What f u c k i n g rock have _you_ been under for the past sixty-one years! Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created a group of heroes who were dedicated to preserving and protecting a World that feared and hated them! Do you actually believe that they weren’t heavily influenced by all the racism and prejudice that unfortunately still exists?! Hell, Stan Lee was initially told he couldn’t have his founding character be someone in a wheelchair! To which he replied, and I’m paraphrasing here: _“Oh, yeah? Watch me… Excelsior!”_

I like that Cyclops is given a little respect. He came in the first episode after bishop and storm had been laid out and took out everyone. Then when he free falls to the ground and blast the ground to land was pretty cool.

Omg yes, cyclops was a dog in this. Like in the first five minutes I saw more respect on cyclops name then the comics have done to him in awhile

@@kdusel1991 I know right, like I love how they actually use his beatos creatively, acknowledging the fact it isn’t a laser but instead a beam of pure concentrated force basically. Like when he slows himself down from hitting the ground with nothing but his beams was so cool.

Cyclops was done bad in the X-Men movies. He was very unlikable and had no stand out scenes.

@@tylerdordon99 while I agree about the movies, Cyclops in the animated series OG was really good and I'm only in this review video at 2:55 so I hope to see what everyone else is saying as true… but my favorite has always been Wolverine/Logan because he's just such a badass!! While what I've been through shows that I'm pretty strong for still being alive, Wolverine super strength is something that I wish I had(at least) because of the fights I've been in that I would've won if it was so!! Maybe if I had his healing power, I wouldn't still have epileptic seizures as I do… 🤔🤔

The scene where Cyclops used his laser-beam to break his fall in the desert alone was way more badass and memorable than most of what he did in the Fox movies. He's not my favorite X-men character, but he's definitely earned my respect in these first two episodes.

I actually liked when Morph changed into Charles. Not everyone deals with death the same and it gives us some insight into his personality. Also him changing into Sabertooth to cheer up Wolverine made me laugh.

After my grandpa passed away, I imitated his voice at a celebration of life event, channeling a bit of him for everyone else there as a tribute. Perhaps that’s what Morph was doing.

I don't really like Morph's new... identity, but really like his new look (kind of wish he had it before, honestly), and that he can copy the powers of some of the people he turns into.

My two favourite parts were Cyclops using his eye blasts to maneuver around the battlefield, and Storm walking through the desert with her lightning turning the sand to glass, then using that to make a shrapnel tornado

@@kurtisdeakin Not even going to touch it being "impossible" because, well, it's fiction and the energy's coming from another dimension.. It does make sense with the comic rules of his optic blast because it's a _concussive_ force - completely different than the often assumed lasers. A concussive force is more like a physical pressure. Unlike lasers, there's no heat (but can sometimes result in heat from friction); it's more like he's "punching" stuff with his eyes. Him being able to use it that way for mobility is consistent with how it works in comics.

I checked out both of the newest episodes yesterday, and I have to say I was literally *BLOWN AWAY* by how good the episodes were. The outstanding animation and seamless 3D and 2D animation blend are mesmerising. The story also truly feels like a continuation of the original show, and the plot lines and twists introduced are wonderfully written and executed. *Possibly some of the best Marvel content we've ever received in a long time.* I adored the characterisation of Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Magneto, Jean, and Rogue, etc... Everyone truly felt like nothing changed, but it still felt satisfying to see them again. I loved seeing the focus on Cyclops and him and Jean questioning the future of the X-men and their child. Seeing Magneto genuinely want to change for his friend was really powerful, especially with that speech in episode 2, which, holy s***, was an intense moment, and his final "don't make me let you down", total CHILLS! But watching Storm lose her powers was heartbreaking and devasting, especially since Storm is one of my favourite X-men and female superheroes. Her losing her powers was the equivalent of chemical castration, and seeing her mentally process it almost brought me to tears.

Fun fact about that actually, it was composed by the guy who did the power rangers theme for all the shows up to in space I believe. But the show is awesome!! My inner 90's kid was screaming with joy

Well I am going to wait. My first impression is that I got a Greg Berlani CW vibe. The fight with mastermold held no weight and his dialogue was cheesy. So I hope I am wrong but this is my first impression. I have no faith in Hollywood writers anymore

Apparently, Alyson Court will be coming back, but she said an Asian actress should play Jubilee (the actress they picked did a GREAT job though emulating her). Very curious if they use Court as Psylocke (like Doug says, PLEASEEEEEEEEE!!!!)

X-Men '97 isn't actually a Reboot, it is a sequel to the original series. They even got a lot of the original voice actors back (some they couldn't due to the actors having passed.)

the kid is Sunspot from the comics. the relationship between rogue and magneto is from the comics. a lot of f the plot points are from the comics including the extra Jean at the end and the trial of magneto from the Claremont run.

Yes, but sometimes stuff in the comics is just plain wrong, and Magneto and Rogue as a couple from that alternate timeline is a perfect example of what shouldn't be in the cartoon. It's a slap in the face not only to Gambit but for those who have long supported the years of chemistry and effort that Gambit and Rogue put into their relationship despite Rogue's powers and Gambit's past mistakes.

gotta admit, I had goosebumps when I saw the first two episodes, my childhood was revitalised. the voice actors did an amazing job with their characters. can't wait for the next episode!

I loved the original and was sceptic about 97 but they really blew it out of the park. The way Cyclops used his optic blasts for mobility, ugh so cool. Basicly every scene with Magneto gives me chills, especially the trial. I wish it was all released at once so I could binge it

Like I know right, that’s what sold me. The first five miniute they had storm show up looking like a goddess hit them cyclops just through and completely stages everyone. Like the way he loved and shot mini blasts to disoriented people it was beautiful.

This is literally one of the best things Marvel has given us in the last few years. The animation, the voice acting, the action, the storyline, all of it is amazing! Between this and Deadpool & Wolverine, it feels like they may FINALLY get back into the swing of things.

I had c difficile at the beginning of COVID and I still don't have much energy most days, even though I've been clear for over 2 years. The fact that you can do these videos and seem to engaged in what your doing is enviable. I know it must be rough for you, since you're such a high energy guy normally and that's what we all love about you, but hey, at least you can still do what you love. I haven't been able to work for a long time.

I like that this show feels a bit more adult with swearing, beer and a bit more intensity with its violence. Magneto's character and Cyclops's story alongside the drama with the FoM and Storm is well written. Can't wait to see more of the X-Men and how the cliffhanger fits into the story.

He has to be, or at least he feels like he has to be as he's got a lot on his shoulders as leader of this ragtag group of personalities. Wolverine and Gambit aren't exactly the most malleable of individuals.

My only complaint (which will probably be viewed as a minor one) is that I thought Bolivar Trask was supposed to be changed from being a “villain scientist hell-bent on mutant control/extermination” to realizing that Master Mold and the Sentinels were ultimately a bad thing and would bring about humanity’s downfall - as we see in the season finale of the first season of the original series. Did I miss something, or is this just a character continuity thing that got ignored for the sake of telling new story? For everything that connects and builds to the original, I’m surprised that they just shoehorned him in to make him be a villain again.

Magneto's outfit is from a comic run where he was put on trial for his crimes, so it makes sense they changed it to that... it's really dumb ... hey I'm Magneto, look my name starts with M, it's on my shirt see? That's it, we're getting monogrammed costumes... Rogue, put this on, it has an R so they know your name is Rogue.

To me the show was a good but rough start. You mentioned how some parts of the animation looked like a Flash animation. I noticed that a LOT and it was hard NOT to notice. Especially in the first episode. As for story, yeah its firing on all cylinders and it looks like they are going with a bunch of stories from the late 80s too. Like Uncanny #250. I want Colossus and Psylocke to permanently join the team personally.

I never watched the end credits for most of the episodes, and it's only when I got to the final episode that I discovered that studio Mir was involved in animating this show. No wonder the fight scenes were so good.

Honestly I love the new XMen series so far, it's got those wonderful moments that it just feels nostalgic, and you look forward to saying "They're back!" and honestly Doug sir I've been following your channel for a while and--seriously I don't think I've ever seen you GUSH so hard on a review. I actually questioned the new Magneto look on Twitter after conversating about it (not a fan of it, although his explanation for changing his look was an intriguing reason). Apparently, it's taken from the UNCANNY X-MEN comic run (not that knowledgeable about the comics trends)

It was a part of the edgy 90s redesigns of everyone. Half surprised he's not covered in pouched. But it looks just awful, and I love that they committed to it. It was a choice to put him in the costume.

First off hope you're feeling better. Loved the first two episodes a little rough start in episode 1, but I love the more innovative uses of Cyclops's optic blasts. Episode really gave Magneto's character time to shine. I'm impressed with the voice actor's ability to recapture former's pitch and tone. They really nailed it with this series.

Loved it. The story and plot twists are great. I never expected to get a rush from seeing Magneto get his own title card in the intro. The original voice actors sound like they haven't aged. The new voice actors blend perfectly. The animation near perfectly matches the movement and style of the original. If I have any criticism, some of the shots where everything is almost or entirely still, look very flat and have thick linework that reminds me of Archer. But that's not even remotely a deal breaker.

As a diehard fan of the og show am THRILLED to hear this, but as someone with 2 chronic fatigue conditions am glad to hear you prioritised your health here, knowing your limits and not pushing yourself so that your next flare up ends up being even harsher are so important, so seriously well done for putting you first. Everyone on here will always want you to prioritise self-care over further burning yourself out for our sakes. We can always wait, if for no other reason than we have decent xmen animation to watch again XD

Honestly, I'm extremely impressed. I adore how creative and intelligent and energetic and kinetic everything feels. My only critique concerns the sound. I dunno if it's for the sake of mimicking the old actor, but Scott's inflection is so stilted (in an old-school dramatic, space-ghost kinda way) that it throws me out of the story--sounds very unnatural. The sound mixing is strange, too. I get the feeling that the actors were recording at home during quarantine, because sometimes the mic quality varies for each line of dialogue. And the balance between SFX and music and talking isn't always the best. Still, the fact that the show's worst sin so far is lackluster audio design goes to show how good it really is. I'm over the moon!

I remember watching the original as a kid, tried to revisit it on D+ a couple of weeks ago and couldn't get into it. Absolutely loved the first two eps of '97 and really excited to see where it goes

It was really good. I was worried that they would "modernize" it, but it definitely has a very 90's vibe. I am glad to hear the old voices. Cal Dodd is the definitive voice of Wolverine for me. It is interesting that they reference multiple comic book plots that they did not throw in to the original series. My only nitpick is the animation style feels odd/uncanny valley for me on close up shots.

Awesome review. X-Men '92 has been my favorite show since I was 9, and I can honestly say X-Men '97 improves upon it in every single way. My expectations were sky-high, and the first two episodes exceeded them in every possible way. The action/writing/score/voice acting/drama is all extraordinary. If it does indeed keep this momentum up, it will EASILY be the pinnacle of the on screen X-Men. These first two episodes have already blow the movies out of the water. I'm looking forward to much, MUCH more.

I absolutely love that they went for that horrible 90s outfit for Magneto. I hope they don't stick with it, because it's awful, but committing to the bit was great. For Morph, I like that his shapechanging has a utility. He's not just Dude-Mystique and using his powers to trick people. His changes are being done for a reason, and I think that's more interesting. What I'm confused about is how Xavier died. The original series ended with him heading off with his space waifu. But here, he has a different death.

One minor criticism of the intro is that the original showed Cyclops's eyes through the visor when zooming in, but in this one they didn't do it.

I've loved these first two episodes, let's hope they can keep it up! I wonder why they fired the showrunner tho, maybe they disagreed on the direction of season 3 (because season 2 is already written and pretty much recorded)!

I am so satisfied with this show so far. I watched the series with my brothers when I was just 5 years old in 92 and it’s some of my earliest and greatest memories I have . I was worried but they really did an amazing job. The only criticism I have is with rouges VA. I know she’s the OG actress but you can tell her voice has aged greatly and it just sounds like an actress trying too hard to imitate her younger voice and it looses the salutary southern sound she had. Jeans VA hasn’t aged a bit! She legit sounds exactly the same today as she did 30 years ago which is wild to me! I don’t mind Storms hair! It’s pretty bad ass but also it’s obvious it’s only for a few episodes as in the intro she has her long hair in a few scenes. I think she’ll come back with her OG hair in the end of the season or the next.

Oh man I hope to hear your thoughts on the series, once you've finished it. Because it gets WILD! I had no expectations coming into this, and my mind is still blown. There are so many OMFG moments in this show. You'd think that Disney just took all the hardcore nerds and put them in a room to do a side project, because it's cheaper/easier than firing all of them. And then they made this masterpiece. Staying true to the fans, while keeping it entertaining enough for the average folk, making them want to dive deeper into the storylines. Don't rush it out, take care of yourself, stay healthy!

Awesome show! Only jarring thing was Archangel… shows him in original class portrait, but the point was made multiple times in original series that he hadn’t joined the X-men yet.

I never actually watched the original show growing up, but I binged it to prepare for this reboot. The original show is terrific and so far I’m impressed by how faithful the new show is to the original. The new animation is much more smooth, the action I think might be even better, and so far the writing feels consistent with the original which was that show’s greatest strength. Hopefully the next episodes can keep up the momentum story-wise because I’m enjoying what I’m seeing so far!

It’s funny seeing people get excited for the Xmen again, I never saw it as a kid (saw Evolution instead) but I’m glad the fans of the show are enjoying it
