My most requested video to date! One of my favorite things about X-Men '97 was how many people got into (or back into) reading X-Men because of it. It along with SpiderVerse are the Marvel adaptations that really seem to drive people to the Comics themselves.
So after X-Men 97's Season 1 Finale a whole bevy of folks here and on social media were asking me not just WHAT those last few scenes meant, WHO was in them, but WHICH comics they should check out before X-Men Season 2 airs next year.
I Gotchu!
Here are the 7 Comics to check out that I think helped inspire Season 2. Listed in order of how sure I am that these storylines will be involved. Was sure to include the Trade Paperback cover that encapsulates the entire story arc so it's very user friendly and accessible
There's plenty of Apocalypse stuff from multiple eras! There's lots of great bone claw and Feral Wolverine material! There's some Cyclops and Phoenix raising Nathan Summers/Cable or is it Stryfe? There's a current ongoing run of the X-Men 97 series that features canon bonus scenes NOT scene in the show! And yes, there's even ONSLAUGHT!
Also included three BONUS comic arcs that I love which may tie-in (tho I'm not as certain)
Including a trade that encapsulates somewhere between 30 and 50 YEARS of Mutant lore in one collection summarized in a sunday comic strip style. Another arc which is essential reading for the THIRD Summers brother - Vulcan. And my favorite X-Men team (outside of some runs of X-Force) the 90's tastic incredibly weird - Generation X!
ALL OF THIS and a Cameo / Recommendation from the head writer of X-Men 97 - Charley Feldman!

Rise of apocalypse - 4issue mini (look for 2016 reprint) the foundation of the young apocalypse stuff it looks like Wer getting as our past timeline
Marvel Comics previously told Apocalypse's origin story in the four-issue miniseries The Rise of Apocalypse by Terry Kavanagh and Adam Pollina. The series tells of how En Sabah Nur's tribe cast him out for his visible mutation, and how that child grew to embrace the "survival of the fittest" mentality that turned him into Apocalypse
Blood of apocalypse (not good but if you want 1st app of Gambit as death)
The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix
the foundation of the Askani son stuff it looks like Wer getting as our future timeline (also in this story most of the other X-men ARE in ancient Egypt but I think they’ll largely have the events of that be based off Rise of Apocalypse )

I’ve never really been an X-Men guy. I grew up with Avengers and Spider-man and I’ve been waiting for something to grab me. The movies are good but they never made me love the characters. X-Men 97 was what I was waiting for. It’s made me such a fan of the characters and I’ve just got House of X/Powers of X because I heard you talk about it and I love the idea of krakoa. I’m enjoying it so much! Definitely would love more of these Coy can’t wait to dive into more! I’m an X-Head now!

Great job as always Coy! Would you consider in the future doing a video that explains how comic book printing/collecting works? Thanks to your videos I decided to start getting into this world but I have found it really intimidating to understand the difference between paperbacks, second printings, special editions, red label, alternate covers and such… there are just so many options and variations and I don’t know where to start

In short tho some terms for YOU floppies - weekly issues Trades - collect weekly’s usually 5-6 issues Omnibus - mega collection Red Band - R Rated edition (newer concept) Alternate covers are just incentive to buy more versions or to show which printing it is But yeah down the line a video deeper diving

I did not realize, and I saw this just by chance that Beau DeMayo was a supervising producer on the show back in 2022, which means he’s probably been thinking about or at least beginning to work on the idea of doing doing X-Men 97 since then

I love your stuff here on YT and your stuff on New Rock Stars! You've got such nice nuanced views that i appreciate. Here is my only critique, and it comes obvs unsolicited, so it's worth what you paid for it. Gotta make sure to move your mic away from your necklace chain, hearing it rub against the mic and make clicky noises is difficult to focus on your great words. Also your video seems blown -out? Slightly blurry? Almost like the lens is slightly foggy? Fix those two things and these new YT videos would be damn near perfect. Keep up the great works!

I love these videos to recommend the comics to read. Don’t get me wrong I love the MCU and the animated Marvel series but it starts with the comics. I’ve read a lot of the feral Wolverine stories in the Epic Collections. So far I have three volumes covering this time and I’ve really enjoyed it. One of the first omnibuses I bought was the Onslaught Omni!

So i never had a chance to read them. But it was awesome to see the baddie in MvC1. Rise of Apoc, I have not read that before Age of Apoc, oh that was a ride So much to choose from.

I wonder if we will get to see the benevolent version of En Saba-Nur during the 3000 B.C. arc for season 2. That tease in the end with Blood of Apocolypse with him bringing back Gambit as one of his horseman is going to happen. They are going to also explore the storyline with Scott and Jean trying to raise their son, giving them the chance to raise him which they missed out on. I was surprised when they got the actor from Lost who played the younger brother Yemi to voice alter ego En Saba-Nur and then also didn't realize he was voiced one of the characters in Castlevania which also had Theo James. I wonder how they will combine all these stories into one season because it's going to be a wild ride.

On a slightly related note, I'm curious if they're are any comics with Cloak & Dagger that would good reads? I watched the Hulu series and they made a brief cameo in X-Men 97, which made me curious about them again.

The first introduction of Sinister was Season 2 and he was all about collecting Scott and Jean genes. So is it too far to believe Madylene created Season 2 Episode 2 I. The animated series. From what is shown Sinister used a creature to steal “gene” from Scott, so is it too far to think Sinister stole a gene from Jean, reverse engineered it and created a clone of Jean. Then X-Men ‘97 Episode 3 shows Real Jean waking up and seeing a failed Jean Clone beside her.

In ep:2 of X-Men '97, when Jean Grey says "He's coming!" and Logan says "Who, Apocalypse?" How did he know who Apocalypse was if he didn't even appear until ep:10?

Coy, I refuse to read any more comics until a) I get my summer omnibuses/TPBs I have ordered, including the Amaglam omnibuses, and b) I read these FF trades you keep praising! Dammit, Coy! @@CoyJandreau probably not since Cassandra Nova is being used in Deadpool/Wolverine I doubt theyd use her in Xmen 97. But maybe Xmen: Red will connect more to that film.

Thank you for the recommendations for X-Men I really want to get into X-Men comics, since I loved the X-Men movies when I was a teenager. Also, do you read any manga? If you do read manga, is there any recommendations that you think we should read. Going back to X-Men. Writing all of these comics down. 😁 Generation X. That comic sounds like what I would definitely be interested in.

Thanks for the comment! gen X is an all time favorite I hope you dig it too! Not much of a manga person mainly just do to TIME. On the rare occasion I get actually caught up on comics I like to read nonfiction as a balance (and the occasional Long form fictional book too) much respect for manga just not enough hours in the day!

THAT is a tall order! Haha but I plan to do Some Top 10 ___ of each character Maybe even top 10 to get into ___ each publisher But I think top 10 Arcs is nigh impossible for how many I love how many I read haha

I don't know that they're going to be doing AoA. I wish they would, but with Rise of A, The adventures of Red & Slym, and possible Apocalypse: the 12, I just don't know there would be room for AoA. Plus, for a story that celebrated, it would be an injustice if they didn't dedicate at least 1/2 an entire season to it, if not a whole one just like they did with the Phoenix Saga in the original TAS. With the big 'A' being possibly the main bad guys for S2, I doubt they would make him the big bad againfor S3 immediately after, so AoA isn't happening anytime soon. Our closest chance to getting AoA remains, to this day, that cancelled S.2 of Wolverine & the X-men series.

if you watch the last episode of the 90s Fatastic 4 show, you will see the Avengers line up as Hercules, She Hulk, Captain America, and Vision. At least, the faced off against Dr. Doom.

@@CoyJandreau Being that Iron Man, was shown X-Men 97 ep 10, then he and hulk may also be on the possible team. Reflecting on your desire to go back to Spiderman the animated series, that would be great. My favorite villains were Doc Ock, Hobgoblin (Mark Hamill), and Kingpin.

Hey Coy can you explain the difference between X Men issue #25 and Wolverine #75? Because I read X Men #25 where Wolverine gets adamantium removed by magneto.

Been YEARS since iv read it but if memory serves issue 25 of X-men is the cliffhanger moment and Wolverine 75 is the actual madness of it!

I just finished the 90s series and in the episode Old Soldiers, Wolverine doesn't use his bone claws. and then I read somewhere that he had no claws before the adamantium procedure. His bone claw origin came later in the comics than the 90s series?? The reason I ask is if in season 2 without adamantium in his body he must became more primal like in the comics and has to have bone claws, if not it will be just weird to sniff and rage like a wolverine without having bone claws.

And I’m reading uncanny X-men 300 finally on fatal attractions then I gotta read 1991 X-men comic which I just went back and forth on to see the arc where Apocalypse resurrected and StRyfe Framed Cable of assassinated professor X x force ,Factor and X-men all teamed up to fight Stryfe cable fought him toe to toe . 😂a lot to read
