While I agree with you on your analysis of Professor X, Jubilee (who was primarily put in to appeal to the kids watching), and Jean Grey, as they were poorly written in the show (and very, very different in the comics) I do have to disagree about your admonition of Rogue for stealing Captain Marvel's powers because she was a kid when that happened, and was manipulated by Mystique. No, that doesn't make it okay, but it's part of her history, so it is what it is. And they put that in because that is the *character's cannon backstory.* That's also how she has the flight and super strength.

I think the context of X-men TAS is important- I don’t remember any kid who was a super fan like me that wasn’t also deeply invested in Batman too (it’s a work of art). When X-men showed up, it was a gateway for kids to the larger Marvel comic book world - which at the time was producing some of the best storylines ever. And then there was the whole trading card thing. Even back in the 90s, the show was a bit cringey around the margins.

Love the X-Men - loved the 90s series, but have to agree it hasn't aged too well. X-Men 97 so far is amazing - and hope you like what they have done with Cyclops so far! Gambit is my favourite character - and so far 97 hasn't let me down at all. I definitely think you should check out X-Men Evolution and Wolverine and the X-Men. Both are 'Elseworld' style series that only loosely adapt concepts from the comics but IMHO both series are good. Evo has a shaky first season but definitely gets much better - and has my favourite version and story of Apocalypse across all X-Men media.

Omg 😆 the Jean Grey joke Had me laughing on the floor lol 😂 But I have to disagree with you on the Batman vs X-men comparison This rivals Batman the animated series in my book. Did you like the new Adventures of Batman series that came out after the original half was finished airing?
@VunderGuy
@VunderGuy 3 ай бұрын
Yes. This rivals X-Men TAS in the same way whoever is number 2 against Usain Bolt is a rival to Usain Bolt. From a technically standpoint, the only thing X-Men has over Batman TAS is the character detailing but this combined with the sheer number of characters in any given episode means in any given episode the animation is comparatively not as good and choppy compared to Batman TAS which is usually much more flowing and less stiff looking and more, well, animated. Really, the only sort of tangible thing you could say about X-Men TAS has over Batman is the narrative ambition and scope in certain areas, but a lot of that comes down to the fact that the X-Men are an entire team of superheroes who constantly travel the globe in addition to dealing with more local events needing their attention which is an apples to oranges comparison to Batman TAS which tends to focus on one hero in one main location more and the other half comes from how unapologetically weird and crazy and grand and high concept the X-Men are compared to Batman generally. Doug Walker/The Nostalgia Critic I think put it best: the X-Men feel BIG. Batman TAS feels more intriguing than BIG, necessarily over all.

Fair warning about X-Men: Evolution. You know that one episode of Batman Beyond involving the return of that one guy who controlled the robot with his mind but who secretly got psychic powers from it? Remember when Bruce tells Terry that the reason he doesn't believe it's a ghost come back to haunt the school because the whole situation feels, 'Too Highschool?' THAT is the biggest criticism of X-Men: Evolution as a whole. It also takes till the later portion of Season 2 for it to get going anywhere. Awful pacing and direction before that point.

Hey, not trying to troll or slam you - but the bit complaining about the exposition (11:00) kinda misses the mark. Yeah, I get it - it's an expo dump. A little clumsy, perhaps but not as much as you portray it - for example, the team is already formed, but we don't know for how long, nor for how long Rogue has been there (we know she joined much later than Beast); so it's possible Beast didn't know some of her origin. And even if he DID know her powers - that doesn't mean she'd told him that traumatic story of Cody before. And the reason WHY she's telling that story is for critical info for the viewers, bc just moments later she uses that power, so it was critical to key the audience into how her powers work. Could they have spent more time developing that exposition in an earlier scene? Maybe, but to what end? This scene is in the pilot ep - the script had to establish the world of the x-men, the mutant-human crisis (heck, they even had to explain what a mutant was!), an had to introduce 7 lead characters, multiple villains (Trask, Gyrich, Sentinels, FoH). That's a monumental amount of storytelling for a 20 min episode. Expo dumps are *good* - they allow you to dispatch with the boring stuff quickly and get to the important and cool parts of the story. I hear you if it took you out of the moment, if that happened I can understand you not liking it. But for 90% of people, it's better to dump that expo and get to the good parts.
@liamnidas
@liamnidas 3 ай бұрын
Fair points. They have to let us know somehow. And I think it's a point a writer made as to why you have expo dumps. It was something along the lines of "sometimes you need to give the audience their vegetables so that they can then get to the meat" or something like that.
@HeroJournalism
@HeroJournalism 2 ай бұрын
@@liamnidas - hey, thanks for considering my thoughts, and not getting mad. You had some great analysis and info here, it was a good watch. I think you were a little hard on X-Men, not in that you were overly critical - but in a direct comparison to Batman TAS. It's just misleading to do so, its apples to oranges - one was an iconic character made into cartoon to capitalize on a billion dollar film franchise with a 65 ep order for weekday airing, and the other was a low budget Saturday morning cartoon w/less known characters. If you really want to compare it accurately to other cartoons, compare it to other Saturday morning cartoons, not Batman, which wasn't representative of the general market at all. So yes, you make some valid points about X-Men, but compare the first season - certainly not the best - it to any cartoon from 1990-1992. Any network Saturday morning show from 90-92, any episode, I doubt you could find anything near as good to X-Men's first season. But if people just compare it to Batman, it's not an illuminating comparison. You sai yourself in your video, Batman TAS's WORST animation studio was X-Men's ONLY animation studio, and were paid half the budget that the Batman show paid them, so yeah, there's gonna be a difference. But compare it to any show that was actually on Sats, like Ninja turtles - it kicked the hell out of that show and that show was like in it's third season. Anyways, I appreciate the discussion - and if you find any shows I said it should be compared against, and you find something as good or better than X-Men, you let me know an I'll check it out - if I'm wrong, I'll post about it on my channel, admitting you were right! 😆

The X-Men animated series has moments of really great writing when it comes to social commentary and what it means to be an individual and how we should view and treat others in society (especially for a children's Saturday morning cartoon) but it doesn't exactly have compelling narratives when it comes to the plot for the enemies. Loved this show growing up. I'd watch my vhs tapes over and over, though I only ever had thr beginning few episodes. The best episode for my brother and I was Wolverine fighting Sabertooth in the arctic, and the eskimo villagers celebrating his strength. The lone wolf finding a place to belong was beautiful and Sabertooth felt like a menacing villian. Sabertooth's introduction, fighting in the unfair court on behalf of beast, and the followup hopefulness of Professor X and Jubillee, only for thr two of them to be taken advantage of and in harms way because they ignored Wolverine's warnings I think still holds up very well. That episode reminds me of the beginnings of X-men evolution, where each episode would introduce a new kid, and both sides would try to recruit them to their side, and I remember that the show felt like there was this sense of loss when a character would go to the brotherhood's side. That is what that old episode reminds me of, hoping to turn this violent madman around, seeing the good in him, and being betrayed by that hope. I don't know. Even though a lot if it didn't age well, those first few episodes to me had more layers that treated its audience as adults. I appreciate a take on the show from someone new to it but a lot of your information is weirdly misinformed. Rogue has pretty much always had flight and super strength in the comics, and the Captain Marvel thing is the cause of it. Professor X is a lot more of a dubious character in the comics, although I agree with you that I much prefer Patrick Stewart Xavier. The take I found the strangest though, was that after this series Jubilee stopped showing up in media. She has appearances in most of the movies, she's in X-Men Evolution, and she's a regular in the comics to this day. Jubilee did *not* disappear at all after this show. Comic Jubes is also a lot tougher, something they seem to be leaning in on with X-Men 97 where she's getting a more confident personality.

@@liamnidas 97 has better animation but thats it. The intro also lacks the detail the old one has. Personally I never expected 97 to be as good as the animated series over all. Marvel was a different talent in the 90s. No matter how much Disney increases the budget it wont have that It factor.

The X-Men cartoon only had like a third of the budget that Batman the animated series had. Saban (yes the Power Rangers Saban) cut corners with the production of the series. Also Jubilee was meant to be the viewers perspective to the rest of the team that's why she doesn't know anyone so we can learn about them plus she's the youngest member so children can relate to her. She gets more interesting in the comics as this series made her more popular.
@liamnidas

Sadly I think the show should have done more with Jubilee because after five seasons, she never really stops being that audience insert. And by then we already know who the X-Men are. Happy to hear she's a much better character in the comics because there genuinely is a lot that could be done with her character.

Basically the same problems I found with it going through the whole series at the tale end of 2021 and early 2022. ESPECIALLY narratively. A few episodes it just seems like we're doing hardcore episodic stuff more about character growth and showcasing and then all of a sudden with very little build up or prior fanfare we're doing serious multipart episodes with so much ambition and purpose and plot that the prior more episodic content sometimes come across as filler in the bad way and then back to character-episodic stuff. It's a weird roller coaster that sometimes strikes gold and sometimes is just okay, to say nothing of some of the stilted dialogue and oft times wooden animation. All that to say, the show is still pretty good by today's standards and still stands as one of the greats for western action animation, but Gargoyles is still better in a lot of ways and worse in others and Batman TAS remains better across the board and has stood the test of time better. Yes, the art style of Batman TAS wasn't that complicated with character details, but literally in every other category it beats out X-Men TAS especially because, technically, the story of Batman TAS doesn't actually end with Batman TAS and goes on into other series, tho even just taking Batman TAS on its own and not any broader DCAU stuff, it's still a higher gold standard than X-Men: TAS and weathered the storm of time better.

Batman TAS is definitely the peak of superhero animation so far I feel. But X-Men TAS is still good and still holds up, despite its ups and downs.

My favourite is Morph, by far. They made his male counterpart just like I'm used to seeing him, but cuter. However, I hate the new voice actor. I wouldn't have too much of a problem, if he got the iconic hee, hee, hee, hee, Morph laugh correct! The third episode in and Morph laughs, ha, ha, ha, ha, and sounded like the Boss Baby. The VA they have as Cyclops/Scott sounds nearly identical to the original voice actor. Good acting. Bad acting, is what this twit did by not getting a certain laugh correct. Sure, the odd time Morph will laugh ha, ha, but it's mixed with hee, hee, and the giggle is 90% of the time a hee, hee, hee, hee laugh. I genuinely believe two things. Why Morph is likeable is because Ron Rubin gave him that cute laugh. As Logan said, he was the only one who could ever make me laugh, it was probably due to the way he laughed. Honesty how many people in real life have you heard, laugh like that?

I loved Morph too. Even though I haven't started X-Men '97, I have seen some clips and am not a fan of Morph's current voice but maybe it will grow on me. Not surprised about Cyclops voice acting being good because Ray Chase is a really good voice actor.

Heavily disagree. Everyone has a different starting point when it comes to the X-Men and anything like the X-Men. Whilst having a good base knowledge of the X-Men will certainly enhance your viewing experience of this show, if a show is good then it will stand on its own too feet regardless. Plus this is a 90s kids show, most people who watched it back then didn't know about the X-men and what was canon or not. And later X-men media hasn't always been the most faithful to the source material. If I had made a character summary, or spoken about what was canon in the comics then I would understand. But I gave my opinion on a tv show. Sometimes you need to know what an "outsider" who isn't very familiar with the source material thinks to give you a better idea of the reception to a show.

@@liamnidas well Its true that that.fhe show lacked in the animation department for the first season with standout episodes like cold vengeance " the animation did get better in the third and fourth season but I feel the show holds up because of the world building and story. It brought so many storylines and characters I grew up reading to the small screen, before that all we had was x men appearances in spider man and his amazing friends and that oond pilot episode of pryde of the x men. I never dreamt that I would see the new mutants making appearances in cartoons , cable. X factor, tue silver samurai banshee, sthe star jammers mojo wanda and quick silver , the high evolutionary I could go in and on.
