Its always important to remember that takeoffs are optional but landings are mandatory! As a real world pilot I make sure I get as many landings under my belt as possible to be proficient.
Landing may seem simple but when the pressure of your life is at stake and you have a few not so good ones plus some gusty winds the mental game is 100% on.
X Plane 11 with its really great real time flight dynamics makes it as good a challenge as it can be in a PC or Mac Flight Simulator.
Lets review the basics ........

If you want to make the PERFECT LANDING then you need the perfect Circuit and Approach! What procedure do you follow???
1) Attitude controls Airspeed / Power Controls Decent OR Attitude controls Decent and Power Controls Airspeed .... Which one are you? If you don't fly your approach with one of these then your not likely to be a consistent pilot!
Let me show you quickly the two techniques so you can get better!

Thank you for the video. So glad I stumbled across your channel. I'm struggling on my landings in X-Plane and I'm not a real pilot so this was super helpful.

Great to hear Marshie. If you have any questions let me know. I have a few flying instructional videos so please check them out. Emergencies as well as cross wind landings. Thanks again Gunnie. :)

80 kts on final leg speed in a Cessna 172?
@TheSkipjack95

In "A view from the hover", John Farley recommends the throttle = speed / stick = descent approach. His reasoning is that needing to gain airspeed ( say because of a gust ) at low altitude, and using a slight nose down is more dangerous than just increasing throttle a bit.

+TheSkipjack95 Yes I have had this discussion a few times. There isn't a right or wrong really .. some people get very passionate about what's correct. I have a commercial pilot as a subscriber and we discussed it and he uses attitude for speed and power for decent rate when flying. Do what your comfortable with mate. :) Thanks for coming to the channel.

Pitch for Alt and Power for speed needs always two adjustments when you change one of them....for a stable approach (trimmend for speed) you only have to manipulate power to control the desent rate, since the speed will stay always the same.

+Vienna Flyer Its a long running argument which is the correct one. Nave one way and airforce the other I believe. Choose what suites you. :)

@@GunniesLetsFlyVFR ...correct. Since approach and landing always depends on various factors, a clean process in one way or another isnt always suitable,

+Ripper rippy I still feel the first more comfortable but Pedrosuda challenged me to try both in IFR conditions so thats coming up next i reckon. I don't do IFR so its going to be a challenge on both parts. Thanks for letting me know your preference. Are you a GA or Tubeliner pilot?

Your approach speed for the 172 is too high for what is recommended by Cessna. If you do not have a published approach for the aircraft you would use 1.3 of Vso (Stall speed in the landing configuration) and your touch down speed is way to high. You should be close to stall speed as you touch down. As far as what controls altitude and what controls airspeed is more of an argument by military pilots and not civilian pilots. If you lose power to your single engine airplane you are going to pitch to your best glide speed, there is no way to power to your airspeed and is one reason most pilots are taught power controls altitude and pitch controls airspeed. When commercial airlines make an approach in the landing configuration they pitch to the desired airspeed and use power to control their rate of descent. You won't see civilian pilots debating this issue.

Very good video. But here is the trick. This has to be IMC down to a CAT 1 minimum (200 ft ceiling). Also, intercept final approach course at an angle (30 deg intercept). Why do I say this? Both methods factually work. However, Pitch for VS and throttle for power is for precision flying (ILS), the other method will not work. How do autopilots Boeing work? pitch for VS(glideslope) and AT for airspeed. Why not the other method? It will not give you the precise control that is needed. BTW, had I been your passenger, I would have like Mr. Second Pilot. You were far more stable and had a better ride with the second method. So, in a future video, do both IMC and blow up the instrument panel and fly both to minimums (don't worry about the landing) and then compare. I have no doubt that you will be converted. I can already see it....LOL

WOW .. Ive just tries a few cat 1 approached to YPAD R23. Power attitude .. ended up ok but right over the parking not the runway. 2 power is attitude .. about the same but left about the same diatance .. oh night as well .. then tried using 1) missed the airport by overflyng it in day co ditions. I need some practice Pedrosura. This is the hardest thing I've ever done flying a sim.
@pedrosura
@pedrosura 6 жыл бұрын
lol The ILS is the goal. To get there you should spend time doing climb descents at a constant power/pitch for VS, Constant power pitch for airspeed, then at a constant VS and airspeed. Once this is second nature then you are ready for the ILS. As practice you could use the autopilot in VS and heading select and manual power for airspeed. This represents what you would do while flying with your instrument skills.
