Ok so BK used some wrong terminology early on, hopefully caught it all and fixed it. Pretty sure that is a Directional Gyro that BK is referring to as the Compass Card and later HSI. There are some differences between the three, but at this point BK has forgotten the details.
Looks like the NAV database for this approach is expired. The approach plate clearly does not match what the game has embedded. Think there are some 3rd party products that fix this, though BK hasn't researched them yet. This ILS into Carl Stefan Memorial Airport, Norfolk, NE is close enough that the chart still gives a good reference. YMMV.
This video is by no means perfect, but it gives a decent intro to using the Steam Gauge Cessna 172 and the included autopilot. This is BK's favorite aircraft configuration to date in XP-12.

If you click NAV again it turns on a second light labeled "GPSS" and then it will follow the GPS correctly, without having to change the bug

@@NilesRogoff My Xplane 12 shows GPSS, not GNSS. But, if you're flying using the VLOC mode in the 530, you have to switch to the HDG bug to make the turn crossing the VOR. If you're using GPS mode, and have the proper way points set up, it will turn just fine.

@@azcharlie2009 Just so - I've flown this route (in X-Plane 12) and, with GPSS showing, the heading bug has no influence on the a/c heading. On reaching Columbus using GPS steering, the a/p very nicely steers for SLAYS without touching the DG or bug. BTW it's important to push the NAV/GPS button on the panel and have GPS lit as well as having GPSS on the S-TEC 55 display.

Great video, thanks! To turn off the Autopilot completely you must press the red Button on the (top)left side off the yoke (They change it in the last version in X-Plane 11)

41:51 isn’t the GS supposed to come on the AP when you hit approach assuming you locked on tot he localiser? I either can’t get the GS or if I do and for one reason or another when I turn APPR off then back on during final the GS goes away

One thing I hate about that autopilot is, you can't set it up to just track the heading bug and adjust the pitch manually. If you do it disengages the autopilot. Personally, I'd never have an STECH without altitude preselect. That autopilot will kill you if you're not paying attention. As you climb and lose performance, it will keep adding pitch until the plane stalls, which leaves you in a trim up stall to the left. A recipe for a spin.

Thanks for a great tutorial. I no longer fly for real due to age. i flew VFR in a C182. Now I have a descent sim setup. How did you display the approach plate in the upper left corner of the screen? Thanks for the tip on pressing the D key for compass alignment.

Dollars to donuts, he inserted the plate in post production. The GPS enlargement is part of X-Plane.

Yeah I did it when editing the video, not while flying the actual approach. I usually have the plate pulled up on another monitor or cell phone/tablet as a reference when I'm flying IFR in these sims. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I don't see much of a difference between x-plane 11 and 12. Have you used both and do you think it's worth it to upgrade? At 41:28 the CDI auto switched from GPS to NAV mode... that's cool, but don't count on that happening in real life. lol. Watching this to see how APR mode is used in an autopilot like this... Some suggestions if you don't mind; I was taught to only put in 10 degrees of flaps when you are one dot above glide slope 44:35 and, I think, you could have stayed at 5k feet and only started the descent when the glide slope needle was centered.

51:28 well the landing looked more realistic from X-plane 11 to 12... That alone might be worth the upgrade. lol. That was a good landing. IMO.

I'd say, for anyone reading this, XP11 and XP12 are similar enough to not really need the upgrade, as long as you are happy with what you are using (I have both and got XP12 simply because I wanted the "newest thing"). I have switched to 95% MSFS2020 simply because no one else can touch the graphics and live maps/terrain. It's mind blowing landing in your own back yard haha! The actual "sim" aspect will probably always be better with X-Plane, however. If I get to fly Thursday night I'll set up my Garmin 530 for an ILS and see if it automatically switches modes. I want to say that it does, but I could very well be wrong. I can't film at work but I'll leave a comment here if it does it's own thing. Thanks for the tips on the flap settings! I'm not a fixed-wing guy so flaps and landing gear, etc... I just have to kind of make up as I go along. Any help here is definitely appreciated! Generally the APR mode just tells the autopilot to kick off altitude hold and intercept the glideslope, or vertical nav if using GPS. My knowledge there is EXTREMELY limited though so take that with a grain of salt. That's at least how I understand it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Shot an ILS a couple nights ago with a Garmin 530 (in real life). Set up the approach in GPS mode and sure enough it switched on it's own to VLOC when set up on the final approach course/localizer. Pretty neat stuff!

@@brettkoski Flying the route here using X-Plane 12 augmented with AutoOrtho and SimHeaven scenery. the Platte and the landscape looks darn good. Installing these two add-ons is "an opportunity to excel" (ah-hem), but once installed, launch AutoOrtho, wait for the magic to happen, launch X-Plane, wait for the magic to happen, and then go flyin'. Best of all, AutoOrtho and SimHeaven are free. Woohoo! In the vid you mentioned posting the approach plate, or a link to get it - AFAIK, it's not given in the description - or did I snooze right past it?
