It is extremely important to fully understand the "Custom Scenery" folder and the "scenery_packs.ini" file of X-Plane 11 to get the most out of any addon scenery. Doing things wrong here may lead to very ugly scenery errors, so I decided to cover this topic in the first tutorial of my new "X-Plane 11 For Beginners" series, as everybody new to the sim definitely needs to know about this. X-Plane 11 works very differently than other popular flight sims in this regard, so I hope that this guide will help you to avoid any scenery errors in the future. I'm getting on in years and have been self teaching myself via KZfaq over the last year and a bit. I have found from other submissions that the scenery in X-Plane is stacked but how to get into the system? So now I have found this presentation by what I think is a natural instructor. So I have subscribed and look forward to more presentations on the inner most workings of X-Plane (a simulator that gives me great pleasure in my retirement). Many thanks for your effort and I have deleted all the other bookmarks on how "improve" your simulator.

Great explained topic! Just wanna add one very basic thing... If you're trying to help a remote user with a stuff like that 0:55, the very first your step must be to check the "Number of Objects" slider. I had two cases in my practice with the slider on the zero position. Silly but it happened.

Excellent tutorial. I once knew this stuff but needed a quick refresher and this was perfect. Hope to see some more videos like this. One quick question, is it possible to leave blank lines between the different groups as you did for clarity or do they have to be in consecutive lines w/o blank lines? And what about the last line, can it have a carriage return/line feed (CR/LF), or must it end w/o?

I am new to XP11 and it has taken a bit effort to get up to speed. Your tutorials have helped to accelerate the learning curve. Tausend dank! This .ini file seems simple but I am having a problem. When modified and saved as recommended after starting XP the .ini file is altered/ restored to it's original structure by XP.

Well done as always. One question: where do files for forests, parked cars, roads, vegetation etc. go? I have them above all airports (at the top of my .ini file). Just to clear up, I am talking about such files that come with the scenery for each airport

Thanks, but to be honest I don't really know which kind of scenery you mean lol. I have several airports with seperate Orthophoto or city enhancement layers, and these always go below the airport layer itself. Indeed I have one airport that also features vegetation and forest layers, and these go above the airport. It depends and usually you can see the correct order in the readme or from the filenames. The way you say pyramid is awesome! I just bought SFD, ORBX Terraflorra and Florida SD/HS. I also did the alpilot zzz_hd_global_scenery4 with a few tiles, but didn't do anything with them other than download the tiles into that folder. X plane keeps trying to rearrange my folder and I had a few questions you may be able to help with. Where do I put Terraflora compared to the SFD line items? And then where do I put the zzz_hd_global_scenery4 item and the 4 ORBX florida files? Thank you, i'm probably like 20 of your total views trying to figure this one out :) **Would a paste of my scenery.ini file help? Thanks again!

Wow this is great. Watched your tutorial on ortho4xp a few days ago, think I missed a step adding the alpilotx mesh completely there! Just added the yoverlay... not the mesh at the bottom. Very curious to see what happens when I change this heheheh

hello, I congratulate you for this tutorial, but, I was trying to follow it, and, at the beginning of the tutorial, there is one thing I don't understand in the custom scenry folder, you select some items, for example the aerosoft scenarios and , LOWI demo area, once selected, the latter disappear but, I don't understand, these entries are deleted, or do you move them somewhere? thank you very much

Excellent video! I am new to X-Plane 11 and have never had to do this when I used Microsoft FSX. You were very thorough and I think I understand it more clearly now. The only thing that would be helpful is understanding exactly what classifies as "Libraries", "Meshes", Photoreal scenery", "Large area OSM" (I have no idea what OSM is), etc. Meaning, how do I know what each one is so I can place it in the correct order? For example, I have the ALES (Airport Layout Enhancement Solutions) add-on. My guess would be to add this to "Regional scenery enhancements" section of the .ini file. Correct?

Thanks, I'm glad the video helped you. Meshes mostly means the HD/UHD Meshes by alpilotX. Regarding the difference between libraries and "normal" addon scenery, I explain that in more detail in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9qCh9agvbq4ho0.html ALES should be a regular library, so the placement in the ini doesn't really matter.

Very convenient you post this video now...I have one crucial problem ,I can not figure out....it is this : many payware airports come now with their own mesh .if you try to use these meshes in combination with Ortho4XP sattelite images ,the tile photoscenery of the tile in which the particular airport is situated ,appears to be not loaded .......as if the original overlay that I created in Ortho4XP is being blocked by the airport mesh .....SO this the big question :where to place airport meshes in the ini packs to avoid the blocking of the surrounding photo imagery.... thank you so much for your superb tutorial series.

Afaik when it comes to the mesh (elevation data), X-Plane will choose the mesh with the highest resolution in that area. So in this case the position in the scenery_packs.ini file doesn't matter, always the "best" mesh will be chosen. It might very well be that very high resolution addon airport meshes will then "overwrite" other meshes like Ortho4XP. If there are display errors occuring, I would try to disable/temporarily remove the airport mesh and see if things improve. And thanks for watching!

@@jankin880 Hi again, I may have come up with a solution, but it only works when the addon airport's mesh is a .dsf file. Then you could try to extract the elevation data of that file via xGrinder and load it into the "custom_dem" field in the Ortho4XP settings. If we're lucky, then Ortho4XP should incorporate the airport's custom mesh and build the remianing mesh around it. If you haven't seen it yet, I'm describing the procedure here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qambZ69l3bWVgJc.html Maybe it will work. Please report back ;)

Hi. I have SpainUHD and all 7 simHeaven_X-Europe which are above SpainUHD. It is possible to have both or I have to choose one. If flying in Spain I have to disable simHeaven_X-Europe-Scenery and if flying outside spain enable simHeaven_X-Europe-Scenery? How I should work with that? Thanks for all

Let me add that if you're having scenery order display problems you can simply rename (preferred) or delete the existing .ini file and X-Plane will automatically recreate the missing .ini file for you the very next time you start X-Plane. It knows the correct scenery order and typically does a good job organizing the list of files. It's not always 100% perfect since there are so many scenery options out there but in my experience it works pretty well. I also suggest taking a screenshot at 4:57, like I did, as it's a great reference to help sort out these problems. 😁

Thanks for watching and for the comment :) But afaik when X-Plane creates a new .ini file, the entries will just be ordered alphabetically. It may appear well ordered because many photoreal and mesh entries start with a z..., so it appears as if XP orders everything correctly, but it's not 100% the case. Some things have to be adjusted afterwards. Cheers :)

@@SimulationChannelDeluxe No, not just alphabetically. The routine that creates the .ini file seems to know the different file types when it creates the .ini and lists them accordingly. Yes, alphabetizing is an important consideration when naming different types of files, and maybe it does depend on this as well. And, no, renaming/deleting the .ini is not perfect, like I mentioned, but it will get the scenery file order pretty close. I've had to resort to it and it worked pretty well. It's a recommended method when your ini file gets corrupted. You can easily try it yourself by simply renaming your current ini file and restarting X-Plane. Regards from soggy Thailand! 😁

Hi Simulation Channel Deluxe, I'm really enjoying your tutorials, some things I already know, but I do learn quite a bit from watching. One thing that I'm struggling with is Ortho4XP mixed with Payware airports. I own a version of LIMJ (Genoa), however it doesn't come with an ortho tile worth of photo scenery. The issue I'm having is - when I download for ortho scenery for the LIMJ tile, my mesh is completely broken, I believe Ortho4XP gets the mesh from it's source however it collides with the payware mesh, leaving me with a part of the airport terminal sunken into the ground and some surrounding buildings hovering a few meter above ground. Would you consider making a tutorial on how to create ortho scenery for a tile that contains a payware airport with it's own custom mesh? Thank you for making the videos you have and also keep up the great work. Very much appreciated. :) Regards Thomas

Yes I can imagine what's happening there. The developer uses custom buildings that are set to appear at one specific altitude. These buildings don't follow the terrain elevation like XP default buildings for example. So they create the custom mesh for their airport, and the edges of that area are set up to fit only the default mesh. I don't think that there is an easy way to apply the airport's mesh to any addon mesh like Ortho4XP unfortunately. Regards

Now that I'm thinking about it, is the airport's mesh delivered as a .dsf file? Then there might be a way to fix things.

I'M Lazy so by having 1 ortho folder and 1 overlay folder you can add and remove ortho as you like and the scnery order won't change and you be doing that alot. As xplane does read subfolders.

I dont understand where i make wrong i tried 100 times still something i do wrong. Only Sarajevo scenery works fine airport buildings all good. If i dont have just ONE of the required scenery library for the scenery will that mean the whole scenery wont work or is it only that part of the scenery i dont have that wont work? I just need NAPS which i can get because it is not available in xp.org anymore...

Deine Videos sind wirklich großartig! Sehr gut und ausführlich erklärt. Leider nutze ich Mac, sodass es mir bis heute nicht gelungen ist, ortho4XP oder Autoortho zu installieren. Es gibt zu viele Probleme. Meinst du es wäre daher möglich, deine Orthophotos zu Verfügung zu stellen, sodass wir sie uns runterladen können ? Das wäre der Wahnsinn, denn deine Orthos sind wirklich überragend. Ich würde mich über eine Antwort freuen. Lieben Gruß

Hey, I'm new at this channel and I'm writing this to ask, how do I can fix that my cities in x plane doesn't are in 3D I mean they're like covered by mesh of alpilotx and show me an image of all the city but with the buildings in 2D, this only happen to me when I'm at Colombia I mean when I'm at SKCL, SKBO, SKRG, SKSP, etc, I cannot see the city in the right way but when I'm at USA places like KSAN, KJFK, KLAX, KSFO, etc, I can see all the city and buildings ok, i have the rendering settings of number of objects on high and it doesnt change anything, I hope you reply, I'm desperate and very frustrated

That's strange, when the loading order in the scenery_packs.ini is correct then you should also have buildings in Colombia lol. So you use orthos there? Did you build the overlays using alpilotX HD mesh?

The Custom Scenery folder always resides inside your main XP11 folder. If you own the DVD version, then you chose the path during the setup. By default it might install inside the C:\Program Files folder, but don't quote me on that ;)

I am 73 been flying since I was 16. I need help starting at the desktop. I not had in all my years using a computer any reason to search for a program's folder. Starting with the folder I was lost at the beginning. I been waiting for FS 2020 to release and with so many bugs and refinements I have decided to XP 11 for at least till the sim is working better. I will review install and upgrades before I purchase.

Sorry, I don't know that software. But tbh I wouldn't really trust a tool to order the scenery correctly ;)

I have the payware version of X-Organizer, I find it does an amazing job at organizing the scenery folder, if you run into any issues, the developer is very helpful and will assist where he can. You can also modify your custom scenery in X-organizer to your liking. Definitely worth the money in my opinion :)

I have airport envoirment hd and when i download custom scenery with custom runway textures the airport envoirment hd runways are displayed instead someone please halp!?!?!?

I don't know if it is true for the AEHD addon, but it might be that it overwrites all custom runways etc when placed at the top of the scenery_packs.ini file which you can find in the Custom Scenery folder. Maybe try placing the "Airport Environment HD" entry further down within the .ini file.

You said that it loads the scenery from bottom to top but in X-plane official video it says that the packs are loaded from top to bottom with the top being the highest priority. Please resolve the disparity.

Sceneries at the top do have the highest priority because they get loaded last, maybe that's their way of thinking. X-Plane draws scenery starting at the bottom, that's for sure though ;)

XP 11 will auto-generate the .ini file every time you start it up...so start it up!

I agree that it isinformative - BUT it is still pitched at users who have basic knowledge of computer files - and for someone like myself who would not even know where to look for files on a computer it is STILL to complex. Perhaps a -Plane for dummies is needed. Still very well done though
