I suggest you to watch the drama until Ruyi become empress, Zhou Xun's acting is a worth to watch. Well at least that's where I stop, I watch the rest from youtube clips.

It took me a long time to finish it in its entirety due to its sadness and my anger and frustration with the emperor. I must say it didn’t help in watching it entirely, became sadder. The only saving grace was her slap in his facein her death and his guilt, grieving and missing her till he died.

I just finished watching this drama. I cried through the whole Last 10 episodes. It’s so sad. I never felt so much heartbreak and ache for fictional characters before but this drama just knows how to break you :(

I couldn't watch anymore after he slapped her. After everything she had ever had to go through and do just to love him. She suffered so much for him and in the end he never appreciated her until she died. Such is the story for many women including my own mother. She loved my father until her last dying breathe and he never appreciated her for everything she lost to be with him.

I still haven't been able to finish it all these years later. I think i gave up around episode 64, it was just too depressing. I eventually watched the last 3 episodes just to see the ending, but I can't bring myself to watch the episodes I skipped!

They expect women to go above and beyond for them and expect 100% loyalty while they play around with multiple women as if they’re some lifeless toy to be played with and thrown away once get bored. I think the emperor acts like men even in modern day. He didn’t deserve such a beautiful woman with pure heart. She’s been with him and loyal to him since day 1 but he’s beyond abusive to her.

The Emperor developing a god complex makes sense. Like, the whole nation actually parades him as the "son of Heaven", it's natural for him to become so entitled. In fact, it's pretty much part of his job to be entitled and to act high and mighty since it affects his ability to keep his country united and his subjects confident in his ability to lead and rule

I bet it's going to be impossible for anyone to not be corrupted with such absolute power. Literally everything is at stakes at all times, people must be trying to over throw him, luck his boot and gain his favour. He has to be constantly vigilant of people scheming against him even closest servant or the concubines. I wonder if there ever an emperor who didn't have trust issues. What he did was wrong, but the world he lives in truly revolves around him. U think at those days if an emperor actually shows compassion and generosity. Say if his concubine or empress falls for a minister and he let her go to marry other guy. He will lose his credibility and respect from the people. It was a different time.

Any ruler is completely good, they have to be cruel and kill people even if they don't want to to show power and authority. Mostly to make people obey him.
