This is a greatly underrated song by Cilla. If the public had known how great the Beatles would become, they would have appreciated this song more. I believe it only hit #35 on the charts.

From "Thank Your Lucky Stars" December 1963. A fine show with Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas, Tommy Quickly, the Breakaways, the Searchers and the Beatles. Also an appearance by Bob Wooler, sufficiently recovered from the beating Lennon gave him a few months earlier. Capped off by a gold record presentation by George Martin. Quite a show if you can find it.

Always thought this was far superior to The Beatles Decca version, shame it only got to No. 35 in the UK charts. This video is the earliest known surviving Cilla Black TV footage, from 'Thank Your Lucky Stars', 21st December 1963.

Cilla really sells this Lennon-McCartney song. This arrangement ditches Harrison's limp lead lines in their arrangement.

After hearing the British female singers of the early and mid '60s, I think Cilla just needed some better recording engineering on her recordings. Also, the arrangement was not exactly to my liking. Would have liked to hear her singing without having to over power her voice to match the brass section of the band. This sound was more middle of the road or pop-oriented. Good for TV performances - but overall I think #35 was about right for Cilla's first.

I think this is the best song the Beatles ever wrote and recorded, but never released. It's too bad the American crooners of the day or their agents did not get a chance to hear the Decca audition version. In my mind I can hear Elvis or one of them singing it at a slower tempo. Would have gone top ten in the USA with little or no change to the arrangement. Whoever arranged Cila Black's version butchered the song.
