Hey AMICUSTOMS, I know this video is a few years old. But I have a question about hooking up and way smaller set up. I have 2 banks of 6 lol 😆 yeah I know kid size. But how would I connect them in my setup? 320 alternator, 1 battery in the rear now then 1 bank, then amp. Would I add the 2nd bank in line with the battery and 1st bank? Or how would I link them in? Like wiring batteries in parallel but with super caps?

Are these caps the same as the old school caps? The old school caps im referring to are the ones the that had voltage readout on the top.

These are supercaps or ultracaps with a much greater farad count. Not even close to the same.

punker4Real aluminum bus bars are used in industrial load centers. If they are good enough for the electric grid they are plenty good enough for 12 volt dc. Also the caps are constructed out of aluminum. I think the super cap manufacturers know what they are doing.

Farads get halfed on each increment of Volt, I think. 2.8V and 500 farads becomes about 6V and 250 farads. If I get the math correctly. Cool system and nice layout!

Cornelii Sandberg you have the right idea some what but your math is off a little. Each cap is 3150 farad to start at 2.85 volt, 5 in series is 14.2 volts and the math comes out to 630 farad. If you overcharge to 15.0 volts that number goes up.

So what kind of voltage should it hold and whats the rest of the electrical look like? Been debating adding caps but not sure how many I need. 240 mechman alt 2 runs of 2/0 Northstar 220 and an ns1 v1. Build isn't finished yet. Help!

How much did that cost? Seams so crazy for around 750wh of power.. you can get used tesla packs for 1300$ for ~5kwh packs. What is the benefit of use caps, vs proper lithium cells?

Why do you overcharge your caps? I've seen you mention that a few times over the last couple years. Maxwell specifically recommends not overcharging for more than 1 second. Is dielectric longevity a concern?

Mc Anderson by using fewer caps per Bank the farad count is higher, you must overcharge then to get to the correct working voltage. I only overcharge when it is necessary, like at finals when I compete. Also your statement about maxwell not recommending overcharging is incorrect. They list 5% tolerance above rated voltage in their spec sheet.

Longevity isn’t a concern if temp is in check and length of time is monitored.

Thanks for the reply man. I was mistakenly looking at the 2.7V cells. I see the Abs Max Voltage for the 2.85V cells is indeed 3V.

Salvatore Hayes the way the caps are bussed together it acts like a balancing circuit cuz that entire row will be same voltage per cap.

AMICUSTOMS ok. Yea I put balancing boards on Mine. 4 boards per bank to be exsact lol. I Only have 48 Capacitors and wiring all 32 boards was a absolutely the most boring and tedious part of my build so far lol I couldn't imaging going 240 caps lol. The cap bank can be charged up to 30 amps without over charging. I was told not to run balancing boards but I got used caps and after testing each bank (charging to 14.4 and draining to 12.6 volts over and over, the high caps got further and further away from the low caps and risk of over charging them became clear to me) I've got the 2.7 Volt 3000f caps. They looks just like xs Power caps but are Ioxus Brand.

Joey Davila It would really depend on what your goal is? Save weight, have higher initial voltage for burp, compact size. These are reasons why people normally switch to supercaps.

808kea808 they are not cheaper then lithium and are more stable then lithium. Completely safe when installed correctly. I have been running caps for over 5 years now.

Hey man, that's really cool and all, but you have no idea about what you have built. The voltage is low, but the amperage that that bank can produce when wired together scares the holy hell out of me. And I work with with up to 2000+ amps at 120/208 volts, 277/480 volts, and 2400/4160 3 phase power. That's up to 2000 kilovolts or 2 megawatts of power at a time. If anything other than the intended load(a subwoofer) shorted out the bank ie: a wrench, watch, cellphone or screwdriver would cause an arc blast. Look that up. 34,000 degrees Fahrenheit, At the temperature nearly all metals turn into a vapor At a volume of more than a 1000 to 1 And a speed that exceeds mark 7. It's cool, But when it's fully charged you potentially have about a 100 pounds of C4 Equivalent setting right there, I hope you realize how dangerous that is. There is no safe distance if that fails and explodes. You need to cover all of the exposed metal with a non conductor and Bolt on fusible links to all exposed contact points. I work for the army corps of engineers in case you were wondering .

reminds me of a story i heard, phone exchange was getting a fresh coat of paint, and the painter dropped the bucket onto the rails, which were 50v at 20,000A. Thing literally vaporised. This thing could be turned into a legit rail gun, maxwell have a data sheet for their similar caps, 2000A short circuit per cap, assuming XS is higher quality, say 4000A short, x48, 192,000 amps

Do you think this uber bank will be able to run the Black Nasty full tilt car off for 5 min? 10?? Not thst thats a good idea but 240 of those supercaps is actually starting to get close to some kind of real world usable capacity. If cap technology can get the F count up to a reserve time equivelant to anywhere near even half of lithium cells, can you imagine the possibilities? So much energy, so much power able to be used instsntly right in the palm of your hand! Unfortunately after thinking about this for a moment I realize the first thing the human race would do with portable power like that is use it to power a new more effective way to kill other human beings, damn...

That is an extremely expensive project. I feel all that effort to stiffen the power rail is let down, when you see how under engineered the car power amps are. Its common to see fire and smoke at a competition.
