Trying out a new speedometer on my XS11 Cafe Racer. Purchased from Legendary Motorcycles it is a GPS speedometer and stepper motor tachometer combo.

Your bike sounds incredible and its different. It revs real slow and combine that with a big cc. Damn! That's an incredible sound!

Awesome piece of kit!, like the fact that there is no sensor to the wheel, the GPS speed is the only correct speed anyway. looks great too. Keep the shiny side up! Grrtz.

Hey Andy. I’ve been going through your vids as been looking at getting the same gps speedo as you and putting it on an xj650. I was wondering since you seem to have upgraded the mount to fit the voltage dial you would consider selling the original bracket mount that’s in this vid if it’s still kicking around? It would save me a lot of hassle getting one made. Plus I live in Hobart.

Andy! What Triple Clamp are you using on this bike? Looks like you fabricated it yourself but what's the knob? I Need one!! Too Cool!!
@ANDY5
@ANDY5 4 ай бұрын
It is a XS11 top yoke with the handlebar mounts ground off and polished. The knob screws onto the steering stem and I can’t recall where I got it from. It was probably eBay but it could also have been Dime City Cycles. It is a dummy steering damper.

Hi Andy! I've been enjoying your XS11 videos for a while. Just got my own '79 XS11 and I'm thinking of getting an Acewell speedometer (2853). I noticed you had an Acewell before - did the tach work well? Did you connect directly to the original tach wire? Thanks :)
@ANDY5
@ANDY5 7 жыл бұрын
G'day mate, I never got the tach working well on the acewell. It didn't work when connected to the factory tach wire so it was connected by wrapping the wire around one of the sparkplug leads, not great if I'm honest.

Just one more question: does the tach work fine on the Legendary speedo straight from the original wire? You're still happy with it?
@ANDY5
@ANDY5 7 жыл бұрын
Yes mate, it does work from the original tach wire as I mentioned in the video. And yes I am still happy with it, very happy. BUT...they are not really what I would call "waterproof". Even if you follow my waterproofing procedure they are really only water resistant. So if you ride in the rain alot I would probably avoid them.

Hi... i liked the video on your legendary motorcycle GPS speedometer. I have one on my '77 750 triumph . Apparently the previous owner shorted out the battery, causing the speedo/taco to fail,.... i got it working again, but the needles dont start from zero. Actually a fair bit before, giving me a faulse reading. Any suggestions on how to zero both speedo, and taco?? Regards Alex Meyer
@ANDY5
@ANDY5 4 жыл бұрын
I can’t find anything about how to reset the “home” position for the stepper motors. My advice would be to go to the Speedhut website, that’s who actually makes these gauges, and send them an email. If it were me, I would open it up, remove the needles, and zero the gauges and then press the needles on in the zero position.

G'day Joshua, I just troll eBay and Google. I type in what I'm looking for and then start trolling. Things like handlebars I would just use "clip on bars 37mm" in an eBay search, for example. Thanks for watching, and enjoy your build and make it your own, Andy

Just wondering what ya did to seal up the wires coming out of the back. The rubber grommet in mine doesn't look water tight. Also the plugs on the wires I'll have to remove to run in a harness. Thanks!

+marty vreede G'day Marty, thanks for tuning in. To answer your question, yes. In my case I never knew as I never rode the bike with a functioning tachometer, the Acewell one was crap. I ended up asking friends with XS11's and in the end the magic number was 6, Andy

i notice that you have your clip-ons under your top triple clamp, how aggressive is the feel of the riding position?
@ANDY5
@ANDY5 7 жыл бұрын
+marty vreede it's pretty bloody comfortable if I'm honest, but my seat is about 4" lower than a standard XS. In fact I recently slid them further down the stanchions but went too far. Currently they're about 3/4" below the top clamp and it feels good. Having said that, I destroyed my left shoulder in a dirt bike accident, and are most comfortable with my shoulder forward loaded. It becomes uncomfortable in an upright seating position. Andy

Happy so far. The only thing I am wary of is that SpeedHut state that their units are not water proof, there is no mention of that with these. I am going to put a dollop of silicon sealer over the GPS antennae connectionand where the wires enter the unit, just to be safe.
@rgmccann

Andy's Motorcycle Obsessions Yes, I need to do the same. I also still need to get my rpm's figured out. I'm still trying to get the bike to stop blowing main fuses so I haven't had a chance to get a good ride in yet.
@ANDY5
@ANDY5 7 жыл бұрын
Ryan I have had to dismantle this gauge, and a Speedhut volt gauge that I subsequently installed. Legendary Cycles had neglected to seal the unit and when I washed the bike the lens fogged up and the LCD screen ceased functioning. Thankfully it dried out and self healed. What I have done is I unscrewed the bezel, removed the lens and the plastic spacer ring between the lens and the gauge face. I ran a bead of NEUTRAL CURE silicone around the outside edge of the spacer ring and pushed it back into the gauge. I wiped away most of the excess silicone and pressed the lens back on, making sure it was sealed with silicone against the spacer. I then screwed the bezel back on. I was caught in heavy rain tonight and had zero issues with water ingress, so I'm calling that a success. Just be sure to use a neutral cure so that acid can't damage the gauge and don't fill the holes in the back, that way the gauge can breath and dry out if it gets moisture in it. Andy

G'day mate, thanks for tuning in. It wouldn't have been my first choice, it came along at the right time and price. Having said that I am happy that it did. I love it because it makes great power and is a ton of fun to ride. A lot of Cafe Racers I have seen are small capacity bikes that don't perform as well as this. So for me it's about the riding experience, thanks again. Andy

hey andy! how you doing!!??... i wonder how does the connection of the tachometer works? for it transfer mechanical info from the engine to a servo connected to an arduino..... HOW DOES THAT WORK?!?! thanks!!
@ANDY5
@ANDY5 7 жыл бұрын
G'day Cristobal, thanks for watching. The Tachometer is a Hybrid "Stepper Motor" and it is controlled by a Stepper Motor Controller. The stepper motor controller only requires a pulse input from the bike's ignition and it converts it to an out put for the motor. I don't think I can explain it properly here, watch this video, it should explain it for you. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9-hqq-a1N2-mYk.html

I think you can wind a wire around the number one spark plug lead, that will induce a signal. Either that or one side of the primary coil. I can't find the wiring diagram any more, must have tossed it.
